Yeah I am just not feeling it anymore. I loved the classic anime but this is just bland and disappointing

Why is that man? The previous one was greater? I think the animation is obviously good now

A bad series gets a bad rate.

This feels like some tacky, generic 90's anime, with the same drawing style, to boot. Awful plot that's effectively resolved by episode 3.

You'll meet your death in no disguise
It may come as a small surprise
There will be no compromise for you"

Animation is fine but the older series did a better job at telling a compelling story

Well.
I was recommended to watch the OG anime.
Because, as i was told, "it is a lot better than (Slayers)"
It really was not, not even remotely as good as the worst character in Slayers.

But then again, there is only up from where the original adaptation stood.
The first episode alone is plenty different already.
So you can expect the score to rise a bit.
PS.
Never take mal scores to heart, many people i know rate shows from 1 to 5.
Meaning the shows they liked the most are sitting with a score of 5.

Rating from 1 to 5 is kinda dumb and destroys the purpose of the numbers, if they go like "5 is not average, but pretty good." But kay. I don't understand that.

I didn't like Slayers from what I have seen and I'm not so sure why the comparison comes from, but that trailer here looks not that bad and could catch my interest. I'm in and give it a try.

Chiibi said:

That's dumb; making magic "look old" only makes it more believable. Do you not watch Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings? Of course magic is old. It's ancient, okay? Magic lore has always been that way!

@AngelicTotoro: Totally agree on the snobbery. If Orphen was animated by Ufotable or Madhouse, people would be praising it left and right. xD

I don't know either... people are quite unimaginative and want explainations for everything. There are different soft to hard magic systems and they just look differently. If you could explain everything about it, it would be science and not actual magic.
From the trailer, the magic at 01:00 looks like some types of magic look like. Don't know where the problem is.

The comparison? I honestly am not sure.
My friend was like, you seen this? You will definitely love this! (like on amazon)
But probably because both Lina and Orphen are traveling mages with companions.
Though i have to say, as i did before, Orphen is nowhere near as funny or good as Slayers was.

It also has a poor rating because douchebags like the one person who decided to review it by three episodes reviewed it by three episodes and gave it a 1.

Idiot. Who reviews anime like that? There should be a rule against it.

Um hi?

It's called an 'arc'. Novels have arcs; this is just the end of the first 'arc'. And how is the arc 'awful'? And about 'feeling like a 90s series' that's because it is a 90s series, genius. :I

Yeahh after watching the third episode and realising that they stuffed a whole book into three episodes, i’m now pretty sure this anime isn’t for me. It’s incredibly rushed, there’s no weight to the story or any of the characters, I’ve found myself not caring for any of them and whether they live or die. They all just feel so bland/underdeveloped. When comicon (yes I know he is called comicron but calling him comicon is the only shred of entertainment I get from this show) died I literally did not care, and it seems the other characters stopped caring that their CHILDHOOD FRIEND died almost as quickly as I did. Honestly Orphen could die and I probably wouldn’t feel much at all. I’d say the only saving grace of this anime is that the animation is pretty decent verging on pretty great at times, but that’s not gonna save it for me. I hate dropping things so i guess I’ll see it through to the end, but I’m really not very impressed by this anime at all.

That's standard novel-to-anime pacing, actually. Sunday Without God did that too...and that series is great...there just isn't enough of it though. :(

I wouldn't say that it's standard at all to be honest, in fact it's my first time seeing an anime with such a fast pace. Maybe it does occur in other adaptions, but I don't think it worked at all with this. It needed more time to make us appreciate the characters, as well as to flesh out the world and the story/lore. They didn't give us enough time to like the characters, and therefore it felt like an empty shell of what it could possibly have been. If I had cared for the characters, perhaps this adaptation would have left a better impression on me... Personally I have watched a decent amount of anime and I've never in my life seen something go this fast.

Do you read many novels? Because that's sort of...the only way to tell. lol (I read them a lot) Not manga. Manga's pacing is much slower. I just finished the first volume of the manga and there's a lot more light-hearted stuff going on...silly stuff.

I'll have to see if the novel also has this stuff...but I've only gotten to where the dragon-beast destroys the mansion.

I feel that the viewers aren't supposed to get attached to the characters who were killed. They were killed to piss Orphen off...and that's pretty much it.

Yes I actually do read novels, I haven't read this particular one but I do read books. However even if I hadn't/didn't read novels, I wouldn't need that information to know that the pacing was awful. You can tell just by watching it that the pacing is all over the place. To add to my prior comment - after watching episode 4 I found my sinking further into despair after we had a flashback episode AFTER everybody has already died?? Which shows you that they do want you to care about the characters, yet they decide to do all of this after the fact.

Also I feel like if the characters were only included to 'piss Orphen off' then there's really no need for them in the first place. If that was the case then this whole arc was just, pointless.

I've also heard the novels are way better, I'm thinking of reading it because I genuinely want to appreciate this story, and the anime just isn't cutting it for me. But even if the novels/mangas are better my opinion on this incredibly shitty adaption won't change I'm afraid. But I'll definitely appreciate the story more.

You do realize that isekai are fantasies.
So far there is nothing special about this anime, it's a generic fantasy anime with bad directing.
Maybe the source material is better but this adaptation almost certainly is not.

Your answer says right to my sentence. This adaptation is following the original source, the novel, even closer than the manga and the 1999 anime. This series is a masterpiece, because people tend to prefer isekai with a lot of fanservice, this is not their cup of tea. I was hyped for this remake, this series is at his 25th anniversary, totally worthy material.

I wish it was adapted by a better studio and director I might've enjoyed more if that was the case cause in general I do like fantasy stories.
The pacing is all over the place.
Maybe I will check out the source material at some point though^^

the original source is as calm as this adaptation, unlike the 1999 anime which was more funny than serious. Personally I love all Orphen adaptation, and studio deen is doinga better job than nanatsu. I think probably it's not your cup of team if you don't like this slow pacing. the only difference between this and the previous version is Orphen's past at Tower of fangs because it's novel adaptation not present in the 1999 version. let's see how this will end

A lot of ppl are rating this based on the old anime series instead of knowing anything about the source material. It's also not based on a 'recent' light novel so what ppl expect is way different from what they're getting.

Ppl are entitled to their own opinion but it's kind of grating when they moan about waaaah no back story, so you get a flash back episode and they moan about that too! #hivemind

Well.
You see, there is Sousei no Aquarion for example.
That show has a rating of 7.12, which might sound incredibly low for mal standards, but it is a lot higher than it should be, by about 7.

I honestly don't think that this show deserves such a low score, especially since it is a lot better than the OG show was, and around 200% better than s2. And is definitely a lot better than Nanatsu no Taizai's latest iteration, which is already underrated due to sloppy character design and animation.

I dropped it after Ep.3 too generic, to formulaic.

Agreed though "Nanatsu no Taizai" is far worse - but that the fault of the studio adapting it....

and that's what was DEEN busy with the most perhaps although they were handling other shows like Chuubyou , that shonen ai movie and also helping Toei with the production of the new sailor moon movies those are what made DEEN had to outscore NoT S3 to Marvy Jack in the first place

With no prior experience to this story (no old anime, game, light novel, etc.), I found the first three episodes to be good, but my interest waned quickly past that. The hand-to-hand combat scenes are far more entertaining than the rest of the show, mostly due to a lack of story--the story so far (after the Azalie dragon scenario) has been pretty bland and the world-building and characters just are not interesting enough to carry the story for me. Nothing about it is terribly interesting and I can't get into the episodes anymore because of this. I'm more-or-less finishing the series on principle, but it was a disappointment after the good beginning episodes.
I find the whole series to be below average overall, but since the next step down is "Bad", I rated it as "Average". If the second season is anything like this one, I'll be passing this time around.

The problem with this show is that it isn't stupidly bad but at the same time there isn't anything good to talk about it either. The first 2 minutes into the show I had to pause it and ask myself "who the heck wrote this intro" it was so bland that you could mistakenly think it was written by school kid. So, how is the story, character and comedy? They are all bland and boring. I have watched a shit ton of bad show but most of them are at least fun to watch but this show is not one of them.

Also there is nothing wrong with how early you can rate a show. I know it is a problem which also happened to Chihayafuru 3. But fear not, once the show is finished the only rating of the one who had completed the show has any effect on the finale score.

Funny. The second I started this anime my first feeling was "wow, this is so nostalgic. It looks old, has a plot and characters that remind me a lot of old animes I watched when I was a kid.".
Then I finish it, come here and find out this was actually some kind of remake.

I love remakes. I never saw one I didn't like (cof gundam build fighters cof). Not because they are not bad, but because I like the originals so much that when something new appears, I'm glued to it. Unfortunately, most people are just can't help but compare for several reasons, but mostly because they "like the original" or are afraid their "exclusive" knowledge might just become outdated. Who knows.

well, personally. I couldn't finish the first episode. I found the pacing to be quite terrible. Thus I dropped it, and rated it a 3.

There's no consecutive for when you rate something. You rate something when you rate something.

A professional who wants to express their opinions to others would have to finish it. That's just natural, but most people aren't professionals, and will enjoy a bit of something, rate it, maybe say it wasn't for them, then move on, rinse and repeat

Well I liked the original anime back in the days and still have some somber memories of it.

With this I am currently at episode 8 and feel bored beyond belief.
The animation is worse. That shouldn't even be a thing. A 20 year old anime shouldn't look better than the remake today.
Everything looks so clean.
The characters look so young.

It's so weird.

At the end of the day I don't like his voice. Might be weird but that's Goro for me and not Orphen.
