I wanted to watch this because girl looks like Nico (best fucking girl you're a bitch if you disagree) but damn, was it this awfully average? It's really close to the 5.xx mark which means "trash" in MAL.

I don't watch as much anime as before...

I think that most of the people are rating this solely by animation and art.

Based on the speed they decided to go with, this could have easily been exploited over 2x episodes. They made it shorter but most of the episodes still felt like the first half of a full length TV show.

Also, as an anniversary project, it should be expected to be indeed a full-length series (24-26) and to be able to act as a vitrine (technically well made to demonstrate the studio's abilities). @Nurguburu

Last thing: I can't personally hold this against a fiction but I know many Internet peoples have the crazy illusion that a piece of fiction must prioritarily make characters lovable and offer emotions rather than focus on telling a story or express an idea/opinion.

6 : 22.1% (868 votes)
5 : 17.1% (669 votes)
We can see that there is still a good margin of votes between the awfully average and okay marks.

Nico is amazing, however Yuki is no Nico.

With that said, the show did struggle with weak art and it felt extremely rushed. The premise wasn't bad though... It had heaps of potential.

Yuki & Niko share the same design but Niko's better for sure.

Egao no Daika was not the worst nor the best anime of Winter 2019, but I don't think you can add it to your "Must watch list". The story remains decent, with a final unexpected message (if you take it seriously & deeply enough) but yeah the animation could be muuuuch better. Well ending appeared to me as extremely easy, like easiest final solution of your life. Expected indeed but it arrived too fast.

If you ever start to watch it, at least watch at least episode 1 & 2 : I hated episode 1 and almost dropped but the following ones were clearly more interesting and captivating. Also, do not expect to deeply & strongly appreciate most characters ; not saying they are irrelevant but you can't really get involved in their lives.

Now that it's finished the negative reviews will start rolling in too. Would suggest giving it a try if interested and not worry about the score of a seasonal that never really had a numerical chance to begin with. Personally, putting the entire anime into perspective, I think it's worth much more than a 6.02

I think this deserves at least a 7, no way in hell does anything in this anime aside from animation/art and the first episode deserve a 6.02. It's not AOTS, but how does this have less than Girly Air Force or Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka of all things is just beyond me.

The rating is deserved. The show started out okay but ended up going nowhere and crapped all over the few interesting ideas it had.

Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka is way better than this show and both are better than girly air force

This show is generally awfully written, and tries to play itself off as a sort of moe version of Code Geass or Galactic Heroes.

The setup is to follow two factions waging war through the eyes of girls on opposite sides, but the attempts at being morally grey fell flat on their face when you took into account one side was led by a happy go lucky philanthropist and the other side was led by a faceless crusty organisation of warmongers. It was obvious from the start that the end result was Stella defecting over to Yuki's side.

The juxtaposition of the light hearted tone and the darker themes only made things feel tacky too. As great as exploring death and loss is, when you're doing that with brightly coloured pixies you're not going to feel as much weight.

To cap it off, the ending didn't even fit the rest of the anime. After all that rushed exploration of what it is to lose and hold hope. Overcoming grief and moving on. It just whacks you over the head with "oh btw, everyone lived happily ever after" after a grand total of the heroines meeting for like two minutes.

Lastly, characters. The weight of each factions characters was totally biased towards Yuki's side. We see their surroundings much more than the Imperial side. The cities, the lifestyle, the citizens, the hopes. The Empire was an empty threat the entire time with no expansion. And numerous plot threads went nowhere.
For example, Yuki's ability for ignoring rules of engagement when formulating tactics that only really got used off screen after its introduction. Or the unexplained assault on the convoys returning to the Empire.

It tried to follow all the keys but failed to hit the right notes. Like a poorly tuned piano playing a masterpiece.
The animation barely even came into consideration for me, at least it wasn't a detracting factor.

This show needed twice the time to pull off what it was going for, better writing, or to make clear distinctions like Buddy Complex did with its two sided story telling.

I recognize myself on some points. It was - in my opinion - hard to really have feeling towards 1 or more characters because you did not really know which side you should follow. Indeed, even if episode 1 seemed to present Soleil's side as the good one, there were as many episodes dedicated to the opposite side (Empire) than the first one. I personally appreciated characters from both camps, despite they killed important members turn after turn.

Also, the global contrast between Yuki's soft & pacific vision of war ; and a solid / realistic vision lived from the soldiers' eyes fighting themselves was more annoying than attractive. I totally understand her state of mind and these non-aggression strategies paid off and fitted her own character. But one episode later/before, you just had a battle where one person died from side A or B : considering we followed both of them, it became easy to desire a loss on the opposite side.

The story itself is decent but the conclusion ("let's end the war by deactivating our weapons & comfort we used to live & survive with") appears as a poof and doesn't give a spare time to clearly appreciate the show. I'm ok with following both side and understand the huge different of war vision. But when they're mixed it just makes a mess and you feel forced to change side episode after episode, without deeply/strongly appreciating one character.

In short, yes it's a 6. Started out great with twists and likable characters. It had a lot setup. While some characters did grow and develop, others like the main protag really didn't. Some of the expectations from the first episodes did not come to fruition. The main protag was shown to be a strategist but she didn't utilize that to the fullest. The ending itself was a deus ex machina of sorts. There is a lot of good here with the premise yet the potential was wasted.

It's more like a 6.5 in my book.
It's plain in all aspects. But it isn't bad.
I liked a few characters, but that's all.
Really average show. Maybe the other shows you guys are talking about deserve less than this score. But I think this score is right.

Plot got better in episode 2 and then towards the middle. Later the bad/too slow pacing was a problem. And it got rushed in the end.

6.02 is fine. I mean Endride is lower 6.00 and made a lot of less failurs than this anime. (Had a decent paced fantasy story.)

I scored 5 here cause basically nothing happend and I didn't care about certain stuff that happend in the last episode - which could have been emotional with a better buildup until there. They made a 2 or 3 cour plot into a 1-cour anime. No real strenghts got developed. The plot is your usual stuff. Boring. Focusing on the chars might have been more interesting ... but there wasn't enoug time to do this + also finish the plot.

Either 2 or 3-cour (1x 2-cour series + another 1x1-cour) or 1-cour and focusing on the chars and the harsh reality of war ... withouht the need to rush to an end. (Just char stuff withoug the overall bigger story about shutting down the chars.)

I have long ago stopped using MAL scores as a measuring stick whether an anime should be watched or not. There are plenty anime here on MAL at the 6-7 score range that I enjoyed.

Gave this anime a 6 and I think it's a fine score for a show that kept my interest up to the last episode.

It is average, but at least it tried its best to come to resolve.

This feels like watching a lighter version of Aldnoah Zero or Heavy Object, but with more death flags.

Thing is, those characters death just seemed weightless because they don't do enough for the audience to invest in them. And the resolve is just feels like a quick fix and didn't feel like it has enough stake in it.

Not all mecha shows are bad, let's not make generalities after a - I can't deny it - quite boring mecha anime. Its core wasn't about mechas to be fair, they were more like tools but not a global theme (even if Egao No Daiko appears in this category).

I took a quick look at your list : if there is one mecha show you should watch to confirm wether you really find this genre boring or not, this is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Pretty sure I'm not the first one to mention its name.

it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't outstanding either. something a lot of people didn't like about this was the fact that half of the characters "weren't likable enough", which I personally argue against, but can understand where the argument comes from.

I liked the show enough, but I think this should have been told over the course of 24-26 episodes. this is especially evident in the last episode where they tried to push too much into one episode, and it turned out really rushed, and very disappointing.

the characters, imo, could have been fleshed out more, and two characters in particular could have had so much more happen between them. the plot is interesting, but I don't think it was executed well enough. the art and animation was pretty inconsistent, and I remember starting from one specific episode, the art and animation kinda just went to shit. the soundtrack is basic for the most part, but the op is a bop and a half.

I think it's a watchable anime, and I wouldn't tell you not to watch it. it has its merits, and I personally liked it enough to recommend it to people if they were interested.

You're not wrong. Its core focus wasn't mecha. I mean, it wasn't terrible, just average. Which is why i gave it a 5. Even putting the Mecha aside the story was kind of lackluster.

Yep, I've been told to watch that countless time. Plan to, someday. Along with Eva and a few others. I don't hate mecha, but i don't love it either.

It actually ain't very easy to figure in which genre it belongs : according to MAL, it can considered as a Drama/Fantasy/Military/Slice of life genre. Except for the last one, it seems decent. About its mark, I agree that it was an average show which I gave 6 but finally added 1 point 'cause I had a bit of pity...

You reminded me that I also had Evangelion to watch, but not for now. Probably Summer, when my year'll be over. I don't really know why, but for this kind of anime, I feel like I must consecrate a special dedicated time to clear it at once.

these 2 quotes summed up how i felt through the show. i think i forgot what they were actually fighting over because i felt the resolution was just weak. if that much of a resolve worked out for them, they might actually be fighting over something pointless.

This series was instantly recognizable for me after ep.3, as I've seen the thing before. This was essentially another attempt at nazi revisionism, no less, i.e. Wehrmacht was a gallant army with great kameraderie and they committed no war crimes, which whitewashing fad was quite fashionable in Western Europe during the 1970-80s until common sense prevailed wit the end of Cold War.

I mean the anime's "dark side" is a military dictatorship which invades a neighbouring kingdom to conquer its land and produce, outright "Lebensraum" ideology. In one ep even their hats copy the reich design. Yet the anime tries to equate the two sides, showing how the invaders were good brothers (and sisters) in arms, how they cared for orphans, had dilemmas, while merrily demolishing anything and killing anyone in sight... Can you reward such nazi revisionism, surely not and that's why this series earns 5 maximum.

Also let's face reality, the princess way isn't how one defeats such a nazi empire. No loli stopped Hitler and his Reich, but Stalin and Zhukov did, with a mixture of internal terror and appeal to patriotism, even religion (orthodoxy) and with total mobilization. In reality Princess lost the war when she failed to have those ep3 orphans executed in public for treason, after all if they resisted they could have killed at least one of the enemy soldiers. Kids or not, the motherland is sacred and must be defended at all costs. As the russians put it: Moscow doesn't believe the tears. Civilians are not evacuated, only factories for the war industry.

Chivalry should have been abolished in the anime and everybody conscripted to form a national army that numbers not just 300k but millions. Send "partisan" units to attack the enemy in territory they already consider conquered and incite the oppressed population to take up arms. Deny the enemy every gain with scorched earth tactics and don't even count losses. In took 27 million soviets but they totally annihilated the nazi Reich eventually. The norwegian loli princess just fled in 1940...
