THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

This was unexpectedly dark and overwhelming. Though Tetsuro only killed robots he was really ruthless and and he even burnt the maison down.

Showing those slums also gave me the chills, that was some terrible sight for the future. I'm always amazed how these old series picture poverty, almost naturalistically.

I found Maetel amazing though, she swinged that whip so elegantly and her whole figure is graceful.

This was an okay episode. It didn't really capture my attention as much as I thought it would. Maetel's character design is great though.

Didn't really care for the first episode all that much, though mostly it was because I love the movie and it handled the same set of events much better. Maybe I'll be able to appreciate it better once it goes onto material that didn't get covered again in the movie.

He did NOT kill "robots". If you were paying attention, he killed cyborgs, the thing he longs to become. The murderer cyborg even begged him to not destroy his brain, since as long as he had it, he could simply reconstruct his body.

I've wanted to watch this, one of the famous classic anime, and finally started to watch.
Good start. Not bad. Tetsuro's voice reminds me of Goku from Dragon Ball, haha.

All I knew was that this is considered a classic, and that it's must see. I wasn't aware that it's this interesting. I really like Tetsuro so far, and can't wait to see his adventures and find out more about Maetel.

It's only the first episode of this anime, and so many questions are raised with no answers! Firstly, what kind of mother would travel with their young child in a blizzard like that? If Maetel hadn't saved Tetsuro, he would have died even if his mother was alive. He then recovers without any signs of damage from being exposed to the extreme cold.

Maetel lets him run off to avenge his mother, this would seem like a suicide mission but who cares - let him deal with them, he is young child after all. When he goes to the Duke's house for revenge, he walks in and kills all of them, being a very young child this doesn't seem possible. All of the Duke's guards, cyborg mates the Duke himself couldn't even defend themselves from a single boy. They all waited for a while seeing him with a gun too, only asking him who he was then begging for their life whilst explaining how they could be killed instead of trying to pretend to be dead and having a slim chance of survival. Remember, this is a single boy who has killed six people (cyborgs or humans, they are pretty much the same thing)!

After running away from the house and being chased by several tanks, he manages to outrun all of them without breaking a sweat and dodging cannon shots at the same time. When he is finally chased down by some cyborg dogs sent to kill him instead of arrest him or anything, he fights back 5 of them before being overpowered. Next, Maetel knocks away one by hitting it with a whip and then two more. Remember, these are robot dogs - probably weighing a lot!

Later on, the idea of communications using mobile phones or so is completely forgotten in this future as Tetsuro doesn't realise Maetel is calling someone in the shower. At the time of the anime, mobile phones were out!

Anyway, forgetting the train windows (in space) and how they opened them so high up. Say it wasn't really meant to be technically realistic, Tetsuro didn't cry at all after waking up in Maetel's house even though his mother had just died. There is no sense of sadness after all these deaths and I find it hard seeing Tetsuro as anything but a cold-blooded killer who possibly caused six families out there to feel the sadness he did when his mother was killed just for revenge. If he's just a kid and won't understand the implications of what he has done, how can he kill so many so easily. A normal kid would close their eyes whilst shooting if they had gotten to the Duke's house and perhaps collapsed whilst crying, not accurately shooting at and slaughtering a group of men so easily, then setting fire to the house.

Besides all of that, it was a nice opening to the story.

Pretty much the same

It didn't start the way I expected, that's for sure

I wonder who was the one who was giving her orders

112 more to go

Maybe it has something to do with his father?

Megalopolis was "right there, behind those mountains", he couldn't reach it because he was "actually walking away from the Megalopolis Station" after his mother was killed

Leori-Orion2199 said:

I really doubt that, otherwise they wouldn't be able to run like that and the dog would smash Tetsurou easily. They probably found out how to make robots lighter by that time.
Speaking of which, it's only 2221 AD, which even at the time of anime airing was 243 years ahead in the future, but they tell us about people who lived for 1000 or 2000 years?

Leori-Orion2199 said:

1) as you said, that's an alternative future;
2) mobile phones could be out, but they weren't nearly as wide-spread or well-known;
3) you yourself mentioned few times how Tetsurou is a very young child when it was convenient for your accusations, but you suddenly are forgetting about that now and how he is still very naïve

Leori-Orion2199 said:

So you blame him for not whimpering but acting?

Or quite the opposite - he actually saved few dozens or even hundreds families that won't be killed now by those human-hunters. And it's possible those cyborgs didn't even have any families

Leori-Orion2199 said:

I wouldn't call that "accurately shooting":

Also, I have to add how police was just staring at Maetel while she was taking out the light bomb

P.S. I finally realized what about "Tetsurou" name bugs me: it sounds too similar to "Tochirou" to me

I've seen the movie before so most of it wasn't new to me.

Felt sorry for Tetsurou when his mother died even though I don't know much about the characters yet.
How he killed Count Mecha was okay, he just stormed at them when they were celebrating and weren't prepared for such an attack.
I hope Maetel is going to use a whip or a similiar weapon more often, she looked great with it.
One thing I was especially impressed by was the music, it was used well and the opening is simply amazing. Isao Sasaki never disappoints.

I like how the anime dives straight into the most dire considerations: death and immortality, inequality, revenge... Recent shows are so superficial in comparison. Or when they're serious they're done in this deterring edgy way. Nothing like that in Tetsurou repeatedly crying over the loss of his mother.

It's weird to me how the goal of Tetsurou's life is to get a mechanical body, seems like a bleak solution in a bleak world. Here's to hoping humanity still exists somewhere amongst the stars.

Lately I've had the urge to watch old classics. EP 1 is good. Already they kill Tetsuo's mom and he kills the cyborgs in revenge. It was awesome seeing him smash Count Mech's head with his rifle.

2221 AD... The Captain Harlock anime takes place in 2977 AD,..
So Captain Harlock is 700 years old?
(As I'm writing this I'm already at episode 80 but I just can't get over it...)

Excellent first episode, setting the dramatic tone and a hint of mystery around Maetel (I had forgotten how fast it came).
The Metropolis style of future cities never fails to work.

@Emdosis The two series where you find those infos are notoriously not taking place in the same universe. JUst like most of Leiji Matsumo-related manga and anime.

@FMmatron Maetel looks like... every other Leji drawn woman when they are young and beautiful. But yes, obviously, the mother dying immediately will make her "female presence" count even more to the little boy.

(What a pity I never finished at least the first "track" made of fthe early series and the films. ^^")

I've had this high on my priorities to start for a while and now that I finally finished all those shows that I had promised myself to get through I got around to watching this show.

And I literally cried in the first episode. Nozomi Aoki's music is just too fucking beautiful man and the amount of charm in this opening episode makes me think of Studio Ghibli if they were grittier. CHADtsuro's far better of a protagonist than I expected, the kid just walks into a mansion and shoots the fuck out of the cyborgs and burns their bodies. What a fucking bad ass. And I'm very curious with Maetel's phone call near the end and why Tetsuro's such an important character. Maybe something to do with his dad?

Don't usually post in these threads of such an old show but I was blown away by the fact that it somehow impressed me more than I thought t would when it's a show I've been dying to start for over a year.

Not necessarily a fan of the older stuff but this 1st episode really interested me. I love how the voice of the boy is the same as Kid Goku, (or maybe gohan?)I love the way it looks, and don't even get me started on Martel. I've already fallen in love with her despite knowing absolutely nothing about her. Very excited to have started this journey as of today, hope this series can be one of my next favorites!

How Tetsuro and his mom were introduced along with the instant revenge on top came off as whimsical. Albeit in a good way. It's the first episode, Tetsuro's character motivation had to be established. Killing off the mom was a convenient way to accomplish that in a manner that left an impression while also opening space for Maetel who bears an uncanny resemblance to her. Dunno if that’s relevant or not. Maetel is pretty mysterious in any case. What's her agenda? Is she a cyborg? On the other hand, it might be just the art style, which is pretty nice btw. It goes well with the overdramatic tone the story is going for. It's pretty cartoony in general. This made for an eventful start.

The setting seems promising too and I'm looking forward to see what places they're going to pass by.

I saw the movie over 10 years ago, but I've always wanted to watch this series, because I always knew that the movie heavily condensed things, so now I'm finally watching it.

Seeing Tetsurou's mother die is certainly heartbreaking. I wouldn't want to be in his position. Cyborgs seem pretty corrupt if you ask me.

The series starts strong.
There is no question at any time about immortality or the pleasures of the body, the important thing is to achieve a mechanical body. I think this will change throughout the series.

It's a train where it seems you can't leave or come back, I don't know exactly what he means.

Maybe it's related to the woman. It is not by chance that he found the child. It is clear that the woman was going to catch the train yes or yes. It still had to do with whom. Background voice can mean two things. One, that it was not planned, which I doubt.
Or two, that it was planned, perhaps the very survival of the woman depends on taking the child on the train. Perhaps the train itself is part of a data collection experiment.
But, otherwise, why would the woman welcome the child, and specifically him?
If there is no organization behind it, most likely it is because of having the feeling of being a mother? At the moment she does not look like a cyborg nor does she have a mechanical body. Maybe she goes further and wants to use the child for personal purposes?

Where if they have been blunt is with the child "killing" the mechanical bodies. I was already thinking of a long-term revenge plan but they wanted to liquidate it from the first moment. They want the series to revolve exclusively around the train.

I couldn't help but have reminiscences of the Doraemon train.

Its a thing that its a large vouyage and the series has +100 episoddes.

Just a heads up for anyone who wants the full experience from watching this anime!!!

After i watched the first episode which was amazing! i started digging for more info about this anime like movies, OVA .... etc and i did find that both Ginga Tetsudou 999 and Captain Herlock anime are both connected to each and the events are happening on same world / universe.

Hence im going to start with Uchuu Kaizoku Captain Herlock and continue from there following the release order.

Important: i did make this text list that follows the order release for both anime's which i was surprised that many Movie's, OVA's, Special's aren't even tagged as tied to the main shows but they do exists if you search for them, Anyways here is the list for now until new stuff comes out.
