The end card definitely seemed to hint at a season 2. Sad I didn't get to discuss this online, but what a beautiful show that kind of hit me as a surprise. With so many sports anime shows coming out these days, I'm not sure how to feel anymore. I love the genre, but shows like Days and Cheer Danshi have let me down... so I thought this would be similar. But I was wrong. This was a truly wonderful show.

I love the last episode too with the standings. Of course I rooted for Yuuri, but to be honest, I just felt like it would have been forced having him win. Yurio is pretty much a prodigy, and I love that he could take the gold. I think it was clever to have Yuuri get silver, but break Viktor's record... so while he didn't win gold, he accomplished so much. I also liked that he came close to winning too. However, I really think Yurio deserved it.

I wish Otabek had gotten bronze. Personal favorite there. JJ is great, and I felt for him so much having what was essentially a full blown anxiety attack during his short program. I love how incredibly driven he was. It seems like he is carrying a huge weight on his shoulders... I wish we could have dived into that a bit more... but I am glad that he was able to bounce back. But I guess I wish he hadn't had bounced back as far. Otabek had beautiful performances and I thought he was more worthy.

The pair skating at the end was beautiful, but sadly unrealistic. Oh well, still enjoyed it!

Well, so much for "making history". Not canon.

Well, it got as close to canon as possible without spelling it out loud haha.
I was hoping for a more official relationship between them but there was a lot of love all around this episode and it was very pleasant nonetheless!

As for the winner, Yuuri Plisetski was my favorite character so I was rooting for him, but it was of course a bit sad for Katsuki Yuuri since he's such a relatable character.

Overall, it was a very unique sports anime, relatable, touching at the same time as being a feel-good kind of show. 9/10 from me.

The thing is, if everything in this anime had played out exactly the same, except with either Yuuri or Victor as a woman, no one would be questioning if the kiss really happened, or if their relationship was canon or not. As a gay man, it's an infuriating double standard. Gay couples in fiction somehow need their validity "proved," whereas straight couples are simply accepted as fact with much less.

Not really.

If Yuri was female I'd see the relationship as probably romantic but be annoyed at how its only teased out and never explicitly confirmed, possibly to pave way for a second season.

As it stands... I see the relationship as probably romantic but am annoyed at how its only teased out and never explicitly confirmed, possibly to pave way for a second season.

If Yuri was female it wouldn't be so ambiguous in the first place anyway.

...however, what I'm most curious about is what will happen to Yuuri's and Victor's relationship. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to Japan's laws concerning censorship, but it seems quite clear that they have to keep the romance low-key. Is there any chance we will ever see them directly declare their love to one another? I mean, it's not like there hasn't been any anime before where two guys expressed their love un-censored, so I'm a bit confused. I can think of a few shows that aren't labeled shounen-ai/yaoi that have contained a kiss between dudes as well. If anyone can explain this I'd be very grateful ^_^
The only possible explanations:

1. The creators lack balls

or

2. The relationship was intended to be a bait and nothing more

1. That would suck, but it kind of makes sense. I read somewhere that the law regarding censorship is very vague and there's also the factor of profit. Still, with the show catering towards young female viewers who clearly don't mind gay stuff I don't see how a kiss would harm them financially. I also remember reading that one of the people involved said that they barely passed the censorship law, but like, why this show? Mirai Nikki had a kiss between two guys, one of them even said out loud that he loved the other one. How the heck did that pass the censorship law? What about Shinsekai yori, where two guys full-on made out? It doesn't seem fair...

2. T_T B-but... they kissed. They're wearing rings on their fingers. No freaking way that can be interpreted as "friendship" with homosexual "undertones", that would be trolling on a whole new level. I get this feeling that the creators really do want Yuuri's and Victor's relationship to be seen as canon, but the censoring issue holds them back.

People still arguing about this being queer bait and that they're not canon? They're engaged? They kissed? He skated to show their love? Did we watch the same show or??

Yes, because getting engaged and then saying you want to end your relationship with them the next day because you're going to retire and they won't be your coach anymore is a real thing?

Yuri saw Victor as his coach first and foremost, and believed that his career ending would end their relationship. That means he saw their relationship as coach/skater and nothing more. Victor may have felt differently, but a relationship needs to be reciprocal.

They aren't officially a couple and they aren't engaged.

I have to admit that I was a little sad that Yuuri didn't win gold, but still happy for him & Phichit is really precious with that cute dream of his.

Victor & Yuuri skating together at the end was just really beautiful!!

I really enjoyed watching Yoi, never expected to like it that much <3!

I loved almost everything about this episode but.. MAN OH MAN, IT WAS SO FRIKKIN RUSHED.
Like, the episode should have been ~40 minutes long or so for it to actually have a decent flow, but they rushed EVERYTHING in one go. That was very disappointing in my opinion.

Still, a 10/10 from me, because this show gave me such emotion and moral support, that no human ever did.

8/10.

It's a French commentator who is on French tv but who went to Spain because that's where the skating is

This guy is from our 3D world :
He's from switzerland (where they also speak french among other languages) and a former ice-skater world champion.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stéphane_Lambiel

When I heard the comments it was natural french but with a not so good acting. Despite that, a funny addition to the cast since he is "real". Probably another ice-skater fan of the show.

Although short and anti-climatic (in my opinion), this anime has been what made me returned to watching anime.

I think what Victor meant by comeback is that he'll go back to competitive skating only to put a conclusion to his skating career. What is more better than ending it on your own skating rink which I assume is in the Russian Nationals. Because taking a break (for a year to coach Yuri) does not equally mean he is retiring and could be confusing esp for those fans who are looking forward to another skating program from Victor. Also mind you, Russian Nationals is always held on the last week of December while the Four Continents on March and Worlds on April so there is enough time for both of them to gear up. Probably Victor announce his retirement in the Nationals and continue to coach Yuri until Yuri becomes a 5 World champion. Because for me, coaching and competing at the same time would be too far-fetch.

Also this has been on my mind ever since the series started. Though Grand prix could be considered as a pretigeous int'l skating competition but it is not considered as the best. Aside from an olympic title, the next title to it would be a World's title so Yuri winning it would consider him as one of the best.

I also think that the writer and director already made a second plan, if ever this series would get a second season and that is to make Katsuki Yuri win the World title. So even though the first season might be too anti-climatic and disappointing, the endin would give way to second season.

So I think the next season would include the Russian Nationals (as conclusion Victor's career, also Victor vs Yurio), Japan Nationals ( warm up for Yuri), Four Continents (Yuri competiting without Yurio and other European opponents) and Worlds ( Gold for Yuri). But I might be wrong too so take it with a grain of salt.

Also guys, stop with the pairing debate. If they are indeed a couple then you should accept it if they are not then all the more. In real life, most figure skaters are really private about their inner circle (Yuzuru Hanyu for example). First of all, this series is not about romance but rather to present what Figure skating could give us and to entice watchers to learn more about figure skating. Though I am already a long time fan of figure skating, this anime made me realize many things about the things happening outside the rink, outside from when these skaters perform on ice. It portrayed figure skating in another light, a side of it usually not seen by fans like me, the anxiety and all of that.

This episode was so good and realistic. What I loved about this show was that pretty much all scores were realistic and in my opinion very fair. I'd like to see JJ, Phichit and Chris having good performances without changing their jumps or not falling, but it's only normal for that to happen, I think.

I was so sad when I saw Victor crying, I didn't expect him to do that but I'm glad Victor and Yuuri fixed everything.

SO HAPPY TO FINALLY SEE YURIO'S REAL EMOTIONS TOWARDS YUURI. Seeing his tears though.... Poor baby!

Also I'm super happy that Yurio won, he totally deserved it and hopefully season 2 won't take too long and we can see Yuuri winning this time. So excited and so happy that I've decided to watch this show.
2 of the main characters have 2 of my favourite viice actors which made things better but I totally loved the other characters, some more than others of course, but overall everyone was amazing. I already loved ice skating but this made me more curious about the sport, and ofcourse I loved Yuuri and Victor relationship, can't wait for what's coming next!

Omg I loved it.
Yuri beat Victor's record :OOO
Victor truly loves Yuri as he cried, and Yurio was also sad when he heard Yuri wanted to retire, but it all ended up well in the end.

Next season for sure I'm 100% sure Yuri will win gold, because finally he is getting used to the pressure, getting more confidence, and if he hadn't messed up his short program, he would have won by A lot.

Yuri and Victor skating together :O :DD
I loved everything

Edit: i just wish yuri had won... but then he would probably have retired so it's good he didn't win

Here's my prediction for the final standings.

1. Yuri Plisetsky
2. Yuuri
3. JJ
4. Otabek
5. Christophe
6. Phichit

I put Phichit and Christophe in the bottom two spots because winning isn't as important to them. Phichit is happy being the new kid and representing Thailand, while Christophe just wants to end his career on a high note by performing well. Winning is the most important to Yuri Plisetsky, he's a main character, and his first performance broke a world record, so I see him winning. I expect Yuuri and JJ to have comeback performances after their mediocre and terrible (in JJ's case) short programs. I put Yuuri in second because he's a main character and the ending would be more poetic that way. Otabek fourth because he wants to win but he's not important enough to make the podium.

Naturally, I'm going to be wrong.

HOLY MOTHERFUCKING SHITBALLS ON ICE

I always said- always knew- that if I didn't get a beautiful fucking duo skate with these two boys I would stage a fucking rebellion, but my GOD was I not expecting that at the end. When Viktor swooped in I fucking SCREAMED. I was having fucking heart palpitations FOR FUCKS SAKE.

This anime ended me. These two are fucking killing me. I don't want it to be over. I want to see these two compete against each other but like, lovingly staring at each as they do their skating shit. Holy shit this shit is 11/10 inject it into my blood stream

Haha. Yeah an olympic title would also be nice but seeing that Yuri has NEVER won gold in his entire intl skating career this would be too difficult to achieve so a World would be a next possibility.

As for Season 2, I really hope they make it but what Yuri said at the end of JJ's program really got me thinking. "No tale is more compelling than one that never ends." How do you ensure a story never ends? You don't give it an ending. I only hope that's my pessimistic side peaking through though haha (In truth I would love to see Viktor's competitive side if they do continue on with this anime)

Overall, this show really surprised me. Never thought a romantic sport anime would entertain me so much but damn was I wrong.

Even after five hours since I saw the episode I still feel so emotional and break down in tears at random times. Rewatching the episode and listening to the soundtrack makes it worse, obviously.

Everything was just so beautiful. The only thing I wasn't satisfied about, was Otabek ranking 4th.

Yurio's senior debut was seriously amazing. Viktor's "Stand By Me" program is definitely my favourite, but Yurio's free skate program is a very close second (and Yuuri on Ice in 3rd place). I love Yurio since the PV came out, Uchiyama Kouki also being one of the big factors why I love him so much. But sometimes tsundere anime boys just work for me. His character definitely did.

Why didn't Otabek get a medal!?!?!?

Viktor crying was a BEAUTIFUL sight to see, beautifully animated, and those beautiful-beautiful eyelashes. I can't get over Viktor. His and Yuuri's relationship is the best thing I've seen in a long time.

Otabek!?!?!?!?!?

I really liked Hosoyan's monologue, cue to Yurio winning gold. Wish Otabek had more lines, should've used Hosoyan more. I just.....

That exhibition performance though. Oh, look, I'm crying, again. Probably the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!? Can't wait to get the BD and see if they improve the animation for that performance so it would look even more perfect.

OTABEK!?!?!?!?!?!?

I would definitely be VERY excited for a 2nd season, but I prefer a movie instead. This season could've wrapped everything up nicely, but with that ending we do need more, and they're hinting for more. I feel another 12 episodes would be a bit much and a movie would be more fitting, but maybe that's just an unpopular opinion.

I can't wait to rewatch the series again and again. I took a break between episodes 9-12 (only return to watch the episode), but now I feel Yuuri!!! on Ice taking over my life again. Sigh.

IMO Yuuri was the best and should have won gold, but at least it was Yurio who beat him to the top because him performance was just as stupendous !
I really enjoyed this show ( and not because it was a trap for fujoshi fans such as myself LOL) for the character development and the deep relationship that developed throughout the show between Yuuri and Viktor, and of course the other Yuri, who had his struggles as well.
Overall, this was an amazing show for just 12 eps :)

Love this scene the most !XD

So yuri on ice ended and apparently it's getting a second season maybe probably based on the ending frame.

If there is no second season (and AFAIK there is no official annoucement as such) then that ending fucking blows. It's way too open ended for an anime original series. On the other hand if it is getting a second season then... I just find it mildly unsatisfying, the way they built up all those what ifs and then didn't cash in on a single one of them.

I'm also not sure what to say about all the gay. I feel like it wasn't compelling enough to add enough to the show to justify how gratuitous it was... but then again I watch hibigay and love how gay it is. I'm honestly not sure whether I'm just hypocritical or if they really are different. I'm inclined towards the latter on the basis that, in hibigay, it's just bait the anime inserted; fundamentally, they're at most, bi. Like there's still a het romance plotline going strong, even if it is a background element. I still haven't decided whether there's really a difference between these two shows, or rather, whether I should criticize them for different things.

At the very least I do feel I can say both are gratuitous in their use of it.

Meh.

I'll call it a 7/10 for now, if only for that ending. I would otherwise be comfortable giving it 8/10; Perhaps I'll do an Arkada and revise it if they do a second season.

They're engaged?
They're not engaged. Yuuri bought the rings and said they were good luck charms. Being engaged was just a joke Victor made. Yuuri never agreed with him.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it was a joke. While waiting for the final ep, I've gone through reading quite a lot of fan theories stating Yuuri bought only one ring, and they seem legit. Rn I'm losing my sanity trying to find out where Victor got that second ring, and was he joking, after all.

Oh yeah...

Thank you The Holy Jesus Christ in The Heaven, I watch this show 'till the last episode.

I actually knew about Yuuri got the silver 'cause the BAD SPOILER on socmed. Well, it kept me crazy because I thought I'll be very disappointed by the show. But, I just watched the episode. And I'm just crying during Yuuri's performance. I'm moved by how Yuuri still have a dream, not going to retire, to get gold medal. And how Yuuri and Viktor are so supportive toward Yurio. And how Yurio, in his mind, doesn't want Yuuri to retire and even threats him in his mind. Yes I see feud, but at the same time I see how they actually really connected to each other, how they really want everyone shows their best.

I thought I'll be disappointed, but I just learn so much lessons here. Ah, how sweet this show! :')

Now, with the possibility that there's second season, I hope so many things come to surprise us. I really want to see not only the developing of each character, but the developing on their relationship. All of them. Of course, not only Viktor-Yuuri, but Yurio-Otabek, Pichit with someone else, ah... everyone! And I hope they reveal the one guy who came to Chris who appears in 11th episode. I want new-fresh character(s) involved, I want the show that blows everyone's mind.

Oh, the last performance of Yuuri-Viktor. I feel this is a wonderful and sweet moment to be in. After they 'separated' as coach-student, they are dancing in the same stage. Beautifully. The feeling between them while they're dancing, every move, every touch, every smile that they show to audiences, I cannot do nothing but crying. I'm so happy about them. I think the kiss that occur in that performance, signs that they are canon - based on posts here and out there - is not the focus here. The kiss, the hug, the behavior, the everything romantic have been shown to us a lot in the previous episodes. I think how they reach the dream together, how hard they exercise for the GP, every effort they have to give their best are what we should appreciate more. But yeah, I love the relationship. I just love it!

Bless Kubo-sensei and all who involved in this work. Bless everyone here! :')

p.s.: English is my second language, so I'm so sorry if I make mistake in this post or you the reader can't get what I mean.

I call bullshit. I know Yurio is talented as fuck, but he should lack tons of experience to beat people like Yuri, JJ & the others who are way older than him ...

anyway, nice ending though - let's see how long people need to wait for S2

I don't want to say that I told y'all so, but...

The last scene of episode 12 was at St. Petersburg.
Yuri would move the practice base to St. Petersburg and live with Victor at there. Because he was running with Macchachin.
I hope to see Russian version that Yuri and Yurio and Victor as a link mate and aiming for World Championship in season 2.

Absolutely beautiful. I can't get enough of Yuri and Victor and look Yurio 😺 the entire season has been a roller coaster ride but I love seeing the character development with this anime. The skating in general was phenomenal, especially Yuri. Watching him skate was so beautiful every single time. Love the BL in this....would you still call this BL or no? Anywho, loved this final episode. Mad he got second but loved the double skating at the end. Its an awesome anime and one of my favs

Wow... how much less of an impact can you make as a finale.

Well this show ended up betraying the expectations I had after the first 3 highly enjoyable episodes. It fails as a sports show because the performances are very barren and repetitive, and there's no real sense of tension and dramatic stakes. It fails as a character story because it lacks focus and none of the character developments feel earned or meaningful.

THIS

It's completely ridiculous how they make JJ obviously the best skater in the competition choke twice, for the sake of Yuri

I was liking this anime alot at the start, but what Nero said is whats keeping it from being a good anime.

Not to mention they took the Yaoi undertone way too far with this anime. It was ok at the start and bearable, but it just escalated more and more to the point where the tags have to be changed to Shounen Ai

5/10 anime, very disappointed with this show. Could have been so much more

HELL YEAH.

I really felt it strongly in my chest, when Yuuri screamed at the end of his flawless performance. That feeling of accomplishment and relief. That exact moment was the most emotional for me and I still can´t stop crying because of that. He even managed to break Victor´s record. So proud of you, kid ToT <3333

JJ's fall and rise felt more credible this time and uh........yeah.

Frustrated with Christophe's frustration because Victor senpai won't look at him skate. And that probably costed him his third place? Someone who knows about the sport could tell me the possibilities of Chris if he hadn't failed, please? Thanks in advance. Still, it was heartbreaking his sadness after receiving his score. On a side note: Bull plushies.

Yurio being Yurio while skating. I could swear Victor landed the news before his presentation to make him loose concentration. Bad Victor. Bad. Fortunately, he managed to "prevent pigs from feeding on gold" until said "pig" decides to not retire. Good job! Ah, and he actually liking Yuuri from the beggining was a nice, warm detail.

I couldn't really grasp Otabek's inner monologue. Need to recheck that part later.

Heh, Phichit's dream was amusing. Also, you can tell who he considers closer to him. Otabek with a hamster cap, yes very much.

Yurio on the podium, with the 2 people he finds most annoying of the bunch on both sides was funny. You could see his bittersweet expression XD. Well, it could also be because Yuuri was supposed to be retiring, but...

But in general, I liked this ending. Very credible....no, wait. JJ managed to get a medal? It seems I need to go with Retsuko to do some karaoke one of these days.

Now that this anime has ended, I feel empty. It was like an explosion of emotions. I cried and laughed and enjoyed every part of it. The drama wasn't that heavy as I feared, but instead it was a heartwarming story that lifted my spirits. But now it has ended. Ah~ it hurts.

For now i'll just rewatch the series and join with the fandom to talk about it. Also, I feel more motivated to achieve my goals.

What an absolutely horrible way to go out.

Seriously. I hated it. Hated hated hated that this episode took the character development from throughout the show for Victor and absolutely squandered it. What an insulting way to ruin Victor's character. Having him return to competitive skating goes against everything we learned about him. And let me say, we did NOT learn a lot about Victor at all. So for the show to destroy the little development we got out of such an interesting character is just unbelievably disappointing.

As a sports show, I don't think it fails necessarily as Nero said, but it's certainly not the best show to watch if you want an exciting sports anime. The sports itself to me was a vehicle to grow the characters, but the finale put such an unnecessary focus on the repetitive performances that it became so underwhelming. To watch 3/4s of the episode consumed by characters that don't get a proper resolution, and instead a quick 2 minute monologue expressing their dreams, is horrible. Why should I care about Phichit's dream when the show puts so much focus on Yuri and Yurio? Phichit is a good SUPPORTING character. But that's what he is, a supporting character. You can't study each and every one of your supporting characters like YoI tried to do and that's what made a lot of the performances this episode so boring.

And they decided to let Yurio win the gold? He beat a prodigious figure skater, and won the gold, in his senior DEBUT? I'm not salty that Yuri didn't win. I mean, Yurio winning isn't a HORRIBLE thing, but it could have been so much more powerful from a narrative perspective if Yurio lost and came full-circle in the end. The bully from last year's Grand Prix picking on the loser, ends up missing the mark. What a way to stint Yurio's growth as a character. Now what need is there for him to possibly grow as a character?

And a Season 2. Fuck that. If we get a Season 2, what could even happen? A Yuri vs. Victor season would make NO sense because Victor is apparently staying as Yuri's coach somehow. I don't want to follow Yuri again anyways. He grew so much throughout the show that I don't need another set of 12 episodes just to watch him metamorphasize into an emotional superhuman. Yurio? HE WON GOLD. What more could we possibly see from this guy that would be substantial enough for a Season 2? Another baity romance between him and Otabek? WHO CARES.

Ugh. What an unsatisfying way to end the narrative. And notice I didn't even TOUCH the romance as a factor for my disappointment. As much as I think that's a valid complaint, because the biggest theme the show has been pushing down our throats is literally "LOVE", it's still more superficial all things considering (because "omg your salty about the lack of queer you tumblrina.") So push that aside -- this episode still completely fails to complete the narrative and themes all because they want another season and more money. Insulting, honestly.

Well, so much for "making history". Not canon.

AMEN.

I'm curious to see how the fangirls will try to deny this. I vividly remember how they said we would get a big surprise by episode 12 and that they're 'sooo canon ugh'. Well, I said it right from the start.

They've been canon since episode 7.
