Finally the kind of episode I've been waiting for since the first one. There's just one thing that bothers me a little bit. How come Izetta's mana drained really fast in the first couple of episodes and not in this one? Doing what she did requires a lot of power and mana, this doesn't make sense to me. I hope we'll get to understand that in the next episode. That being said, this episode was great and the series is growing on me. I'm looking forward to watching the next episode!

I don't think her mana drains. I think her power is dependant on the location. She seems to take power from the land, and there are locations when there is more power than others. When she fought the fighter planes in episode 2 she said "I can fight here" and after crossing the mountain, she suddenly lost power. So it really seems it depends on the location.

You might be right, that would make a lot of sense. She would be pretty impossible to beat if the battles keep happening on the ground.

Elystadt vs Germania forces.Elystadt soldiers knew they couldn't win in this battle and tried to buy time until the citizens evacuate. When Izetta appeared Germania's aircrafts and tanks were wipe out and they lost the battle. Also,in the end it seems that the Elystadt's King died.Good episode once again.

And I can sense another conflict emerging from that event. Seeing how popular Finé is, it's almost certain that there are people (or factions) that will oppose her (and Izetta).

I think she's popular enough she won't face any major opposition. Besides the Germanias aren't gonna wait long before attacking again, so the focus is gonna stay with Izetta and the army for a while.

So, this must sound funny, but I speak german and I still didn't get most of what the Eylstadt people were singing during their national anthem (?) (which was in german) at the end.

Did anyone get the whole thing? I only got something about "bordering mountains", "Oh Eylstadt" + something about harps, one thing about pride of their home country and "eternity is our wish".

Was plausible a similar implication in the story, however, they have managed to build a fairly pleasant and engaging narrative, albeit obvious even in the final. However in the future they must show more than that to take off this anime. Consistently good drawings, animations and scenes. The soundtrack is so egregious, his duty.

On the other hand, I really fear the show will end all it's battles with Izetta destroying the Germans in each battle, considering she defeated an entire unit of tanks and planes this episode, without counting how she anhilated those planes in the previous episodes. It would made the show predictable, and I want some surprises.

+1
I really want less of Izetta pwning everything and more of other stuff.

I mean, her fight looked cool and all, but it was also pretty hilarious imo, and somehow everytime she appears the seriousness dissapears faster then food infront of me xD

The show is titled Izetta the Last Witch, so it's a given most of the story will center on her actions. The OP also suggests the same thing.

I don't think there's any dark side to Izetta's power. The humans are the dark side, and the preview suggests the higher-ups from Eylstadt will try to use Izetta as if she was a thing.

Good episode, though it makes me wish there was more historically accurate trench warfare type anime without any sort of magic. I know that's not what anime is for though, but it'd still be cool to see.

This season is really garbage in general so Izetta definitely stands out among most of the other shows.

Using the term SJW when thats not the case makes you look retarded. FS can be fine, using FS when its completely unfitting aint.

They definitely portray the enemy commanders as bad guys, but more than anything else I think they portray them as men who are confident in their advantage and deeply believe that they could never lose. They don't make bets on whether they will win, they make bets on how they will win. That's why they're so shocked when the reports of their defeat come in.

Even the writing on the granate was on point.

This could become my season favorite, but it has very hard competition. Weak season my ass. Its pure gold.

Also the germanian commanders playing sort of death-champagne? Lol. New hobby detected.

Well, I can say that this show passes my three episode rule so I'll definitely continue watching it. That tearful embrace between Fine and Izetta was pretty touching. I honestly prefer the realism of war, but Izetta being a badass is fine too.

Personally, I think the show would benefit from keeping the magic to a minimum and the Germans just coming up with tactics that Izetta can't handle with her magic alone. The show is pretty generic alternate WWII history as is, but I've never liked when "other" magic users join in the fray in these sorts of shows, like when other Geass users showed up in Code Geass or other Death Note users showed up in Death Note (don't even get me started on Luke Cage), causing it to just turn into generic superpower conflicts. At least the other method could introduce a "magic can't solve everything" agenda, which isn't original in of itself, but I don't think I've seen it besides military might before unless you want to count Valkyria Chronicles.

Besides, this show is called Izetta The Last Witch, as in there shouldn't be any other witches.

Contrary to everyone, the first half was less entertaining to me... Felt too much like a cheesy war drama. The 2nd half was more action packed not without flaws but it does what this anime advertise itself as. Except the tree crashing scene which felt a bit too cheerful in the middle of a fight.

Have you served in the army before? Having served in the army, I really appreciated the first part. How the glasses mc fell asleep with the heavy helmet on his head. How the enemy advanced in squads of threes (with covering fire from a machine gunner squad). How the trenchlines were dug in a winding manner to route away bomb blasts.

As for the second part, Izetta is too OP. She needs some opposition else every battle will be one sided. Maybe the Germania officers will turn out to be vampires or something.

I didn't complain about accuracy. I was impressed with the trench zig-zagging as that help prevent enemy from just spraying down people from one end to the other. However that doesn't mean it wasn't cheesy in how they portray the glasses guy. In every show about war, you have that nervous inexperienced guy that's quiet and nice. That's just a big no for me.
What I mean by first part is the part BEFORE the Germans attacked.

And yes Izetta is OP, though I do expect there to be opposition later on. Pretty sure it was to cement that she has lots of influence on the outcome. It was still pretty cool to see. Though I like to see normal battles more I wouldn't deny that Izetta throwing the tanks around was pretty cool.

I don't know, but note that I'm not talking about which side is right/wrong, I'm sure the American movies wants the audience to root for their side but do they give screen time to German soldiers and make them look like bad guys or less human? It wasn't that big of a deal this episode but did warrant a question mark from me.

You mean like Rambo, King Arthur, 300 or all of the Vietnam War and WWII movies where main guys (mostly Americans) are always the righteous and the most important player with almost no flaw while the bad guys are horribly portrayed? Get out. This anime portrayed the Germania much better than Hollywood portrayed America's allies, pff. It's 3rd episode, Izette hasnt get her uniform yet and you expect the development for villains? It was an honest question, I have only seen a few American WWII movies . And who said I was expecting any development from anyone? I just prefer stories that are more than good guys vs bad guys, which is what I've gotten from this anime so far, but I'm not denying that there's still potential for growth.

I love this show. I love how they've maintained the quality up till now. The way they animated Izetta throwing around those tanks was pretty good physics wise, and the fact that not every single tank just exploded into a billion pieces as well. Even that first tank where all the swords bounced off of it was pretty damn realistic.

There wasn't really much progress in the story since we're still dealing with the skirmish from last week, but the determination of Izetta to fight for Fine, and Fine backing her up by sending the message to her soldiers, was beautiful to see.

The death of Fine's father should throw a spanner in the works, as will that black haired dude asking for details about the battlefield. Not sure if he's friend or foe (though I'm betting on the later).

Next week should be just as good, methinks.

I thought the lancing of the Stukas was cool until that got topped by her body slamming tanks. Not too shabby! I really loved the dynamic camera as it followed her across the battlefield. Outstanding sequence of animation. The direction and composition of this show is making a fairly simple plot (thus far) very enjoyable. I expect more irons to be tossed into the fire once we get back to the Germanian special agents. And something is making me not trust that one assistant of the King.

The least impressive part of the episode was the death of the current emperor and those snobby Germanian officers.

Maybe it is Austrian German. Eylstadt as shown in the world map in the anime is the western part of Austria in the real world. Anyway, I won't bet against some broken German assuming it was sung by Japanese people.

Yeah, A lot of American war movies do the same thing.

I hope they mantain the realism on this and don't destroy a germania tank with a single soldier with a tiny gun

My complaint was that the way the anime portrayed them, from their faces and the way they talked, it was clearly intended to tell the viewer "look, these are the bad guys".
"Yes, unfortunately. The air bombing couldn't finish the job alone... You win this bet" says the Germanian officer to his superior, with a broad smile on his face.
It's a minor issue but so far it seems reflective of the simplistic nature of the narrative.

Not this bs again.

Im sure Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge didn't think themselves as evil either when they killed 15% of Cambodias population nor Stalin after he ordered the widespread starvation of the USSR resulting in the loss of 20 million people. Fun fact, modern depictions of evil villainous organisations are based off the nazis, it's been that way since 1945, and having the nazis believing that their absurd racist and genocidal political beliefs were not evil and completely justified does not have any bearing on the fact that 95% of the worlds population acknowledges that by our modern day standards the nazis were through and through completely evil.

Shuumatsu no Izetta (Izetta, the Last Witch) Episode 3: 9/10

A penetrating silence, broken only by the occasional caw of a single falcon wheeling above. The unwillingly stoic faces of the soldiers manning their armaments below. This opening to Shuumatsu no Izetta’s third episode marks a departure in tone from earlier installments, and the greater attention paid to subtlety and patience persists throughout this chapter, ultimately creating something gorgeous.

The powerful, persistent message of the third episode is the vast gulf in meaning between the Eylstadtian perception of the war and the Germanian perception of the war. From the Eylstadtian side, we see a war being desperately waged by a government stretched thin across too many fronts to manage: the soldiers in the trenches battle for their lives and for their families, the bureaucrats battle towards some glimmer of hope for victory, and the ruler himself wages a bitter battle against his own illness. In contrast, we are shown a Germanian general whose greatest concern appears to be the bottle of champagne he’s wagered over. The fears for the Eylstadtians are the destructions of homes, cities, families; the fear for Germanians is that the emperor might get ticked off. The absolute desperation of the war for the Eylstadtians (“losing lives to buy time?” Finé inquires in disbelief) is very powerfully portrayed, and even more powerful when we are shown what a throwaway gesture of dominance the invasion is for the Germanian empire.

Despite the prominence of actual warfare in this episode, the show doesn’t stray from the theme of legendary power. “Master Sergeant, can we win?” asks a new recruit. “You know the story, right?” replies the sergeant. “Coenenberg was where the first archduke of Eylstadt withstood a siege and defended his territory. Inside the walls of that fortress up there are all kinds of swords and things from the Middle Ages.” Indeed, the only saviour of the Eylstadtian realm seems to be in cultural legacy: the people need a miracle to defeat such a military menace, and the only miracle they can find comes from legend in the form of the White Witch. But the absurdity of the sergeant’s assertion is only made worse by the sight of Eylstadtian military arming themselves with medieval lances against the developed military threat of the Germanians. Legacy seems to be Eylstadt’s only salvation, from the legend of the White Witch to centuries-old military history, but it proves to be little help in the unforgiving world of blitzkrieg. The sergeant concludes the same: “Well, if those damn Germanians came after us for real, the place probably wouldn’t last twelve hours.”

If the poor nation’s army is vastly outclassed, and its legacy cannot protect it, what is Eylstadt’s final salvation? As it turns out, the White Witch of legend (astride one of those gorgeous medieval lances, no less) has superb military prowess. Izetta harnesses historical power, both in her use of the flying Middle Age weapons and in her imitation of the White Witch’s legend, and defeats the Germanian force with legitimate magical badassery. The way artifacts of legacy are used here is truly beautiful, and that beauty bleeds into Finé’s acceptance of Izetta’s sacrifice. Ultimately, as Finé explains in an impassioned and powerful speech to her soldiers, the important part is not the fighting itself. In such a state of quantitative weakness, revenge and vindication are useless. The only purpose of sacrifice is to protect the things they hold dear. Here, Finé’s motivations are laid bare, and her fear of allowing Izetta into the fray is made clear: waging this war is a balancing act within the princess’ heart. Is the safety of her cherished witch worth more than the military salvation Izetta’s power promises?

This chapter was told in a surprisingly heartfelt, genuine fashion. We are brought into the inner desperation of the reality of war, the complexity of sacrifice for those that we love, and the strange ways in which the power of legacy operates. Not only did this episode say so much about the waging of war, a witch astride a flying lance shot swords at Nazi tanks and returned to her princess’ side amidst a rousing chorus of the national anthem. In a universe with such a winning pairing, what could possibly go wrong?

Very good point, and it should be noted that Izetta's motivation is the same. The Germanians wiped out her village yet she's not fighting for revenge, and indeed she tries to minimize casualties even among her enemies. She fights simply because she wants to protect what she holds dear. In fact, she put this into words back in episode 2. Remember when she was getting ready to face the Germanians fighter planes and Fine asked if it was okay for Izetta to use her powers? Izetta replied that her grandmother would have allowed it if she was fighting to protect what she cares about. Fine's dilemma builds up on this.

And it should be noted that ultimately Izetta takes the decision to go to the battlefield of her own volition. Fine only decides to play along after Izetta has already taken action. And what I find beautifully ironic is that, while Izetta had asked Fine to become her hope, in reality Izetta herself ended up becoming hope for Fine and her people.

It's clear Izetta's dealing with some serious self-esteem issues, but at the same time she shows a great deal of courage and no small amount of self-confidence. I find this mix of virtues and flaws really interesting, and it makes Izetta a surprisingly engaging character to follow. I'm looking forward to see her growth as she walks the path of Eylstadt's legendary savior.
