Ouch that bitch slap. I know these two are just kids but Ronja and Birk really has an unique chemistry in this show. And Ronja's father is also there with them now which bought some emotions.

That hug is worth a thousand words <3

I like that Mattis ultimately is honest. Although I hope he finally sees Birk as we all have gotten to know him. He'd better or one day HE might be on the receiving end of that slap! Cooler head seemed to have prevailed but I'm thinking that something is wrong that's coming to blow this all apart.

Me too, although I'm diving in raw and doing my best with the Japanese, I cheat by using the transcript of the original sweedish movie to confirm I heard right.

I also watch them raw the day they come out, which just gets me all the more excited for the subtitled version. ^_^ I sincerely hope this show gets an official English DVD release!

I recall laughing at the scene when Birk was declaring that it was a rainy, then windy, then frosty summer. But this time the music and Ronia's expression made sure I'd feel the exact opposite. :P

That slap hurt, but I think it was necessary. I was afraid the scene with Matt would be as abrupt as it was in the movie. But the whole thing was made a little bit more convincing here. Otherwise, who would believe Birk would come home with the guy who beat him to a pulp just like that? It showed clearly that Birk values Ronja more than his pride (or a thousand knives for that matter XD). And that confession! Though right now it's arguable what Ronja really meant when she said 'daisuki', I believe in a few years it would really mean 'I love you' anyway. <3

I'm glad they've shown the Birk side of the reunion; it was so satisfying to see that bear hug from Borka. At this point the movie was rushing to the end, and with the anime having as much as three times more airtime left, I'm expecting to see more scenes! (Like freeing Pelje and the two Borka robbers maybe?)

No worries there! The dub's been announced quite a while ago. Though it would take quite a while, I imagine.

This from Geoffrey Wexler's linked in account.

Producer, English-language Dub, "Ronja, the Robber's Daughter"
January 2014 – Present

26-episode television series of the novel by Astrid Lindgren ("Pippi Longstocking"), directed by Goro Miyazaki for NHK, now being broadcast on NHK in Japan (from October 2014). My team at Studio Ghibli manages worldwide distribution in collaboration with Saltkråkan, The Astrid Lindgren Company.

Team members:

Geoffrey Wexler,
Tetsu Shinagawa,
Taro Goto,
David Freedman,
Nobuo Kawakami,
Michiko Nagai

Based on a recent NHK announcement, the show begins a rebroadcast in April after it's initial run ends. That's an unusual thing as many anime simply end and go directly to DVD. Perhaps the plan for this would be for Netflix to acquire it like they did Knights of Sidonia?

This one has a quirky mix of companies behind it and right now it's anybody's guess how they'll go about with the distribution. Read somewhere that it was polygon pictures'' call that netflix got Knights of Sidonia. Though they are the animation studio for Ronja, the main producer for this is dwango (who owns niconico). Then there's Ghibli, who's got a deal with Disney. About NHK... no idea. They don't air much anime (in comparison to other major networks) to begin with, so I'm not sure if they go about this stuff the same way as with the otaku-centric shows that rely on dvd sales.

The DVDs for Ronja are being released even as we speak. Those will have any animation changes incorporated in them. One change that will be seen (unless they missed it) is in ep 21 when Ronja and Birk are about to go over the waterfall, the long shot of the falls shows them on their horses on the rocks up on the left hand side.

It is a crazy mix, but according the Wexler info, they are in charge of distribution, so I would expect that whoever purchases the North American license will be in charge of the localization. What they should do is let Polygon Digital America do it, that way they can do the lip-syncing and then let them do the NA release.

The Japanese DVD's yes (of course! :D). But dates for North American release, haven't seen any yet. Interesting, where do you see news of the changes? I thought it was only my imagination, but the last five or so episodes felt more robotic than usual and had a few weird shots.

Gah, am not really privy to the behind-the-scenes of this stuff, so I can only hope the actors match (or do an even better job than) Shiraishi-san and Uyama-san's performances.

This Ronja will always be MY Ronja.

I'm going to be honest with you, I've found the last few episodes to have the most expressive animation so far. I think it's our collective imaginations because we have a hidden agenda where we want more hand animated stuff and it kind of tics us off that this is working out so well.

DVDs of anime almost always include changes after the fact due to time constraints of the original release. There are websites dedicated to before and after comparisons of anime between broadcast and DVD. Some changes are minor, others more drastic. I watched the 90 minute documentary for Ronja which is on youtube, but no subtitles. A lot of details, and a long interview with Goro Miyazaki and Sazuki-san. The reason I mentioned lip-syncing is that Polygon Digital has pioneered a system by which they can streamline doing lip movements. I can't remember the exact number, but I think it was between 45 and 50 standard mouth positions corresponding to different kanji sounds.

Right? It's definitely going to be a tall order for the english dub voice actress to match that.

Oh no, the movements are all right except for a few buggy poses and rough transitions here and there, and the expressions are near perfect. But I see now... perhaps this quality has been the norm the entire show, and I only began to notice because I've rewatched this part more times than I could count because of anticipation (plus the delayed subs).

Well that's cool, I'll go and hunt some one of these days. That one, yes I've seen it too. The part about the lip movements and fixing the facial expressions for episode 15 was particularly interesting.

For what it's worth, there were a fair number of changes made to the DVD/Blu ray release of Knights of Sidonia. Most of it was in improved visuals. Most of the time the changes are minor, unless we're talking about the new Sailor Moon Series, where the changes are often drastic.

An alright episode. Birk was quite selfish getting upset knowing that ronja is going home (even though he knows that they would probably die in the winter). i did not like that Mattis caved it to Ronja's sulking and forgave here strait away. other than that i would say that it was a good episode with the crying fest that was going on.

Crying fest indeed. I joined in. Then I laughed. And overall I kind of feel like Mattis has some ulterior motives (he's a bit too cheerful?), but I have to respect him a bit.

Ronja's confession was perfect! And ahh, just the overall emotion was great this episode.

So we get a duel next episode, then what? Ally against the officers?

The vividly clear nightmare :/ This episode was really filled with emotions! The silence showed by Ronja after that dream.

The reunion with Mattis was pretty nice, so many tears and smiles! Mattis able to invite Birk to visit anytime for her daughter :)

That side of Birk is pretty hard to take at times :O, the pride along with that insulting tone. The nightmare really added power to Ronja's words! Being honest at that moment, and saying that she won't abandon him and would die together if it so happens so. It really was a great moment! After that, Birk's pride completely demolished and the desire to simply want to be someone he cares about.

Glad to see that the conflict is dying down with Birk sort of getting an ambassador role. With him also going home, the reunions were really great!

That preview looks really interesting! Probably a dispute on who would be the big boss of the coalition xD A duel though, lol.

Wasn't expecting it to be resolved because of how much the two care for each other :) Ronja would do whatever it takes to be with Birk, and Birk knowing that Ronja definitely would stay the winter with him at the cave and freezing to death made him be able deal with the idea of going with Mattis.

If I was to guess I think the swedish TV would buy the license ^^ Like ''Barnkanalen''. A while ago some Russian cartoon of the book ''Karlsson on the roof' was done they were airing it on ''Barnkanalen'', Its an other of Astrid Lindgren book :)

really happy with this episode... Mattis was finally come to his senses (I like the character...and was a little sad see him acting like a moron in his last apparition ^^' )... although, I would like to see some apologies to Birk ... but was already a great step to Mattis :)

I just finished watching this episode about a minute ago and thought the same. The pacing and tone of the music was just perfect. It enhanced the mood quite nicely.

I'm happy to hear there will be an English dub, though I prefer the subtitles, I want to recommend this show some of my friends that have small children. I think the kids will love it.

Next week's episode looks like it should be a rather comic one.

I have come to the conclusion that the Japanese people treat their kids intellectually with way more respect than in the US. For that matter, the Swedes as well. There are a lot of complicated issues in this se, moral issues and spiritual issues, that would make an adult's head spin let alone little kids. Stealing from your own clan to feed a rival clan? Out and out defiance of parental authority? And this long stretch exploring what love really is about? How many people can honestly say they would die along side the person they love rather than leave them?

I'm so glad that Mattis apologized to Ronja and Birk and brought both of them back home. Although it felt a bit rushed, I'm glad they made up.

Besides which, this love is different from "sex when?" This is love tested by hard times. These two will be together forever even if they never ever have sex.
