The naming in Chaika series sure is strange. >< I knew that there were a lot of characters named after cars, and there were some words lifted from Russian, but it gets so funny sometimes.

Honestly, I thought at first that they named Chaika after Chekchov's play (it also means "seagull", the word is of the feminine gender), but, apparently it's after a car, made by GAZ, Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod. Have never seen one, I think. Reddit says that her surname is also a name of car, made in GDR.

But in ep.1 they introduced the Izhmash guy. And Izhmash is Izhevsk Machinebuilding Plant - the plant, that produces Kalashnikov assault rifles. I dunno... That's all kinds of bizarre and adorable. I wonder, if they chose it, because of Izhmash's now bankrupt car division, or all of the Gaz citizens will be named after soviet plants. ><

I think that they took the usual inspiration for the evil empire. :D
The Gaz palace reminds me a lot about the stalinist architecture and especially the Moscow State University building. Just look at it:

Just wanted to share something, I've noticed. Though it would be interesting to list other car names.

The author's naming sense is almost as weird as the naming sense in Amagi Brilliant Park.

The author did a similar thing in Scrapped Princess where all sorts of things/people are named after firearms and their producers, e.g. Winia Chester = Winchester, Browning, and Steyr.

I suppose it makes naming things a lot easier.

Oh... You're right. I didn't notice it (it says a lot about my attentiveness ><).
I wouldn't mind it, but Izhmash is a bit too much.

I was wondering about that as well.

Acura being the surname of both Tooru and Akari, while also a division of Honda.

I already knew what a Trabant was, since my grandfather used to own one back in the day.

Chaika is a common slavic word meaning "seagull", thus making it stand out because of my slavic native language. Though I was deceived like you as well. Didn't think it was after named after a GAZ car. It makes perfect sense, since most surnames in Hitsugi no Chaika are after car models.

Sakaki Ichirou's naming scheme is something interesting, I guess.

By the way, really digging the architecture of the Moscow State University.

Just marvelous. They did a great job mimicking it.

Whoa, thanks for your insights! (I kinda forgot about the thread...)

Btw, Lada Niva was especially hilarious. As it have turned out that's the actual name of the new versions of Niva, but for most people here it looks like a mishmash of two well-known car names.

Lada is the name of the series of cars that they try to make presentable at the moment, so it's mentioned in media pretty often (Putin drove it as a part of it's advertising campaign, so you can imagine the amount of jokes). And Niva is most well-known as the favourite car of young males in the rural areas (cause it's cheap). There's quite nothing as ...er... thought provoking as a proud army dischargee on a Niva, who tries to hit on city girls.

Niva means 'field', or more precisely field with crops grown on it, it's a poetic word.

I had a silly smile on my face when I heard the "Lada Niva" name. Back in the old days I had the plesure of driving Lada Niva 4x4 a bit myself (my uncle had it, I was still underage). It was white

I WTF'd in the first episode, When Chakia Trabant was introduced. Niva Lada, Skoda, Tatra so on. As one from Eastern Europe, all ring a bell.

Тоже в значительной мере позабавило это. Интересно, откуда он все это взял.. То ли в детстве хотел работать авто-инженером, то ли что :D
