----------------------------------------
Just watched in the theater, the CGI was really well-made, nice animations and nice OST. I don't know how faithful it was but it wasn't that good as I imagined.

Yama changes sides like 3 times, and he changes his opinion so fast that it's a little ridiculous.

Overall the support characters are really weak, and of course they can't really characterize them well in almost 2 hours of movie.

With the exception with Yama's brother who I kinda liked.

Anyway 8/10, I enjoyed it nonetheless and I feel that it deserves praises, even just for the marvelous animations.

The graphic....I think this one put up a challenge to FF 7 Advent Children...the very damn thing that attracts me a LOT , that super awesome graphic!
9/10 . I like the story and the graphic is marvelous , every ost matched its own scenes , making it booom!! intense.

And awesome voice actor too :)

Graphics were awesome, but the story was really bad and I felt it ruined the character of Harlock that was established in the original series. His whole plan made really no sense, but the really worse part was that after he went on about "unraveling the universe" for years, the crew still didn't realize they'd die until late in the movie-_-

I'll old on about bashing the dialogues since I only saw a dubbed version now and I'm quite suspicious of the quality of the translations that seemed quite bad. Hoping for a subbed version soon, maybe I'll discover the story was entirely different and the translators just Robotech'ed it.

As it stands now I'd give it a 9 for the graphics and a 4 for the story.

On a bright point the combo of that story and the bad dub made half the teathre, me included, laugh for most of the time :D
Needs to fix this sometime but I'm lazy - since 11/05/2009

The CGI was amazing (for Japanese budget)

Although I feel the plot remained a bit empty, and God the characters were filed with the most redicoulus stuff in the film..... *cough* Captain Harlock *cough*

I really loved the CGI, it was one of the best I've seen. Admittedly, the plot was lacking, but that's what happens when you adapt a 40+ episode anime series into a two hour long movie. I'd definitely rewatch this movie again when I have the time.

the story was kind of unclear and it felt as if they wanted any scenario just so the movie can be created

aslo, at the end I wanna know what happened to Captain Harlock, cuz it seems like Yama took his place and even his power?? or did I misunderstand ??

EDIT:

i settled with 9/10 since im bothered with their advance science and technology that they cannot terraform other planets and also there are countless number of habitable planets out there in the universe

Except the freakin' skinny people. Otherwise, very beautiful.

@j0x, yes there are, but they couldn't find one. Too rare perhaps.

Plot needs some work... but hey, this interested me enough to put the TV series on PTW.

Spectacular movie, the first half kept me on the edge of the seat
It was Star Wars meets Final Fantasy animation to me overall
I don't know anything about TV series or movie prior to this

The things I didn't like were Ezra's actions and pulling the plug on Yami, though she seemed wanting to die in her vegetative state
Yama's flip flopping side as a spy was terrible as well
Some of the facial expressions didn't came over naturally

The space battle's and backgrounds were a feast to the eyes and the story about the home coming war and earth being consumed by dark matter were good
Masking the surface of the earth with hologram satellites was well done visually

I'm not sure if Captain Harlock died in the end and passed his rank to Yama, but it worked out all right to me

This is the second time One Rock Rock does an anime-related movie theme song peformance and I think it's totally awesome like ''The beginning'' as the ED theme song for the Rurouni Kenshin live action movie.
For this movie it's ''Be the light'' by One ok Rock. Though Captain Harlock is not an anime. The graphics were really cool. But I wish I could watch it in Japanese(I watched English dub). I want to know what it sounds like

The film was written by "Mobile Suit Gundam UC" author Harutoshi Fukui and directed by "Appleseed" director Shinji Aramaki.

When I read that, I got super excited. As expected, the CG, VFX, and voice acting were great. Even the OST was top-notch. Heard this film didn't do so well and received mixed reviews, mainly the negative reviews from critics and people who saw the original Captain Harlock series.

But, as someone who has never seen the original cartoon except for short clips, I saw the film without bias towards an affection for the original source material. I still loved trying to comare the characters to their original 70's era cartoon designs, which was fun noticing the similarities, like Yattaran/Yulian, the striped-shirt fat guy with steam-punk goggles, or Captain Harlock's friend Toshiro/Tochiro

Miime/Mimay was my favourite character. I really liked her ethereally graceful wine-sipping quirkiness. The only thing I found strange was that how she could survive in the end because the ship is still "alive", but the others of her race on board didn't, at the time of Toshiro's death. I was expecting Yama/Logan to

If I see the BD/DVD come to North America, I'd totally buy it on the spot. If they can make the 70's era cartoon Captain Harlock designs look this awesome, I'd also like to see what they can do with other Leijiverse titles like Galaxy Express 999.

Damn. Miyuki-chin got a really weak supporting character. *fumes* honestly all of the supporting characters were surprisingly weak. D:

Anyway, overall it was still entertaining to watch. CGI was pretty badass. 8D but in some cases it fell short; especially in conveying character's emotion.

She wasn't really weak though? She was pretty badass at the end there with her guns, although she was shot down...but that doesn't mean she was entirely weak. Unless you meant it in a different way, like weak as in not fleshed out (in that case, I would agree)? I liked it when she asked for volunteers to go down, but no one did. She clearly is more brave than the rest of the crew, except for Yama who volunteered. Also, I honestly thought Yama kicked her off to kill her but I was wrong. Then again, from right when he was introduced, I could see the resemblance of him to Captain Harlock, so no surprise there when he ended up continuing the legacy of Captain Harlock.

It was an interesting story overall, the battle scenes were intense and the music that accommodated those scenes was epic. Like everyone else mentioned here, the CGI was very appealing. Despite the plot not being the best or how it felt condensed, as well as the difficulty in connecting with the characters, I still rather enjoyed this movie. They especially did an amazing job at the last part where Captain Harlock passes on his role to Yama.

When the credits began, I was quite surprised to hear One Ok Rock! Be the Light fits the story pretty well, in terms of the feeling of regret and pain, as well as looking towards the light in the end ^^

Captain Harlock and Yama has some weird resemblance in appearance. Makes me think they are father and son o.o

There's been more Harlock's in the past. It's only natural.

Anyway, the CG certainly does a good job at making cool action scenes (though low violence for some reason). However, it does not capture the nostalgic romance of an old space opera. Not to say that the old Harlock anime are somehow super amazing, but still this movie is generally off note.

Have to agree with the other comments - the visuals were breathtaking but the overall story certainly lacking. As for the characters I somehow came to like the sidecharacters even more than the main ones even though they received nearly no characterization. I don't know seeing their bickering and especially Yattaran - he was kinda cool. Would have loved to see more of all of them.

As for the end it left me a little confused. We have seen pretty much all of the crew dead on the floor and even Harlock wounded (bleeding). But as soon as the engines started again and new black matter being created - everyone came back to life. So it would kinda seem logical to guess that the black matter was the cause as it was for Harlock in the past. So do they all now also posess the same undying bodies like Harlock? And Harlock has to be OK too - I mean it would seem kinda strange with everyone reviving and only the one least wounded succumbing.

Also one last thought: Making Jupiter a giant plasma cannon - one crazy but genius thought!

At first I wasn't expecting too much from this movie as remakes of old series combined with CGI tends to not go well, but to be honest I actually quite liked this movie and the CGI! All in all a pretty lovely story with an interesting ending, it could've been better on various points but in general a very good movie! 8/10

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was left fairly confused with the story. Never seen the original series, so I thought it was either because of that or that I got crappy subs. Visually it was great but taking the story and characters into consideration, I'd give it a 6/10.

Not quite sure why Harlock seemed to make Yama his successor. I mean, that guy was one hell of a turncoat, just bouncing back and forth between Harlock and his brother.

Really stunning visuals, at first when I found out it was CGI I was a bit disappointed, but it was actually incredibly impressive and beautiful. Some of the character faces were oddly lacking in emotion at times, but impressive nonetheless. The story on the other hand was a convoluted mess. I also could not care less about Ezra and Yama's relationship yet over and over and over again it focused on it.

I've only seen Galaxy Express 999 and Adieu Galaxy Express 999, which Harlock appears in, and they were some of the first anime I ever watched. So I'm going to go 5/10 for amazing visuals and the nostalgia factor. As far as characters and plot it was a miss.

Incredible visuals, ambitious designs and a blockbuster soundtrack don't completely make up for the weak characterizations. But I must admit I was still blown away about how good it looked for being CGI. You can really tell when there's a huge budget involved.

I've read that the producers didn't recoup their investment, so I'm guessing a sequel is out of the question. It's a shame because with a good script they could have done something really special.

I haven't seen or read any of the Captain Harlock series though I'm familiar with other Leiji Matsumoto's works, so I haven got to say anything about the adaptation except that the CGI was great, Kei's hair in particular is downright from Leijiverse if nothing else! The story was just OK. Overall 7/10 because I enjoyed it.

Gundam just isn't gundam without a giant laser that can hit the earth from space... oh wait...

Well... at least the lasers were pretty and the action was nice. I like space battles.

Story was... "okay" at best. The characters were all so stupid, like they can't think past 2 feet in front of them. Called it on the "next" Harlock at the start of the show...

6/10 (above average) and only because the action was pretty good. Good concept, mediocre execution.

Well I haven't really watched the Captain Harlock anime so I enjoyed it, Yama's side changes were one of the main things I didn't like in this movie. I mean come on nobody should be swayed that easily. Captain Harlock is my favourite character without a doubt, He was awesome.

The CGI was very well made, it's been a while since I saw something on the level of FF advent children, the scenery especially, the faces were kind of unnatural at times especially when they smiled but overall it was very well made.

Can someone explain the whole deal with Ezra, Nami and Logan?? Ezra made a comment of how Nami wasn't faithful to his bed. So did she cheat on him or something even though she's a vegetable?? Did she sleep with his brother before or something? Why did she choose Ezra over Logan? SO MUCH that I feel wasn't explained properly, but very good for one movie.

It was visually stunning! Perfect use of cgi in detailing the people, spaceships and environment. You could see they worked with a big budget. However, the story and the characters were a bit boring. The little brother changes sides like 4 times, while the older brother is very unlikable. I wanted Harlock to have more badass moments and fight scenes. Also, his underlings didn't really have much development.

Well, it looked great, music was epic as well, but I literally kept thinking to myself everytime the melodrama came, or the pacing jumped exposition, or the characters randomly changed... "man this is awful". But then that ending.

[spoiler]Apparently myself and only like two other people on this thread think Yama and Harlock are the same person.

With his talk of starting again by unraveling time, talking about continuing the legacy before passing the helm and detonator, releasing the Dark Matter that didn't have an adverse affect on the planet (cause it was already there), the scene of the last bomb being dropped onto Earth, the same flower Yama's mother had bloomed being on Earth and growing in the glass cylinder Harlock already had, Miime returning after she said, "I am not sad, for I will always be by your side" and saying the same to Yama after she materializes again, the exact same scar, the hair..... I thought it was obvious. The last ten minutes completely changed my mind of the film, and makes everything seem alright. 7/10

Just happened to watch this flick last night, though only by pure coincidence, as I was zapping around and it was aired on some local niche channel.

Now this is actually my first encounter with the Harlock (Or Leji-) Verse in general, so I'll need some more incarnations for reference.

I have to say that I usually watch such stories with mixed feelings as I tend to support established jurisdictions (except maybe if they're communism-based) against pirate/rebel characters (Please don't ask me why, just. Don't.)

This movie was great looking. Point. That's all (but it is a lot for a CGI animation).

I wasn't expecting a new chapter to this universe but a new story made to attract the new generations while giving some fan-service to the older ones.
- the young boy becoming a part of Harlock's crew formula was needed for the outside point-of-view
- the story about finding a new home and the bad earth government is a re-use of the classic elements: neither good nor bad, rather a background pretext for gorgeous action scenes on land or in space
- the re-design of the pirate ship was nice with this organic touch, the old characters were all easy to recognize
- the new Harlock "mythology" created for this movie bothered me a bit, it does not serve the new story nor can it appeal to old-time fans. All this feels like a forced way to open a path toward sequels set in the same reality (maybe on different media)
- while all characters were poorly characterized due to the chosen format, the ones who get the most attention are the brothers. One should have been kept as the public eye rather than becoming the fool that was made of him, the other is correct.
- but the most important point against this actualization is the eponymous character himself! (it should be part of the previous point but I find it too important) The title being "Captain Harlock", one would expect a strong character able to stand on his own under this name. But what we see during two hours is the astonishing spectacle of an empty shell who hides itself under a cloak of darkness (because being dark is being cool) and a number of awesome action demonstrations (because doing awesome things is being cool). Sadly, this poor shadow of a glorious hero of our past, despite his uncannily good 3D CGI representation of this beloved romantic hero, wasn't able to fool me long enough to support my lack of interest for the movie story, after all he was the perfect incarnation of it: over-capitalization on the look to the detriment of the inside.
I do not understand why the romantic type of character was judged to not fit to our modern times. How is he more contemporary relevant as this "darky" young male/ghost?
- but people who liked one or more old works around this universe will still appreciate the few references included only for their sake (Toshiro for example, how the hell are newcomers supposed to understand it?) and they will get those great action scenes they only dreamed about.

My personal note would be a 4+ (4 if I prioritize the content over the look like I do usually, 5 if I take them both equally). But I liked the previous series/movies/manga.
An objective note would be 6+ (same as above), because it is clearly more focused on fishing a new public (like the people above) than the old one (me). And it has what it needs to achieve that. But it still feels too bland to be a 8, due to its "blockbuster flaws".

The use of CGI and fluid 3D animation was stunning. And the action scenes were practically the meat of the movie. However, the plot got confusing in the 2nd half and the MC switched sides too much and too easily. Overall, very entertaining but couldve been better. I'll check out the main series someday.
