Of course it's not dead! Why would it be dead if there was a new movie coming out in the first place?!

The franchise is never dead. The last movie came out two years ago and there are two (three? four?) manga series still going on, not to mention it's still garnering a lot of new fans. Why would it be dead? It's like saying Evangelion is dead when apparently Rebuild 3.0 came out last year.

I haven't started doing any reviews yet (I applied for this account years ago and just started using it today) but in my opinion, it's one of the best mahou shoujo series ever made. I recommend watching the first two movies which are retellings of the first two anime series with a bit of new material and much better animation.

Here's a quick subjective summary for those not familiar with Nanoha anime:
TV season 1: good
TV season 2: fucking awesome, six out of two, aoty
TV season 3: it doesn't exist
Movie 1: awesome
Movie 2: good

In other words, watch the first movie, then the second TV series.

The second movie felt a bit lacking and couldn't deliver the emotions present in its TV counterpart - compared to the 1st one, which managed to compress the first season really good.

A bit spoiler-ish graph of episodes (includes episode numbers, which may be a spoiler): click, click 2

The second one is worth to watch, the first just if you want some characterization of secondary characters.

Personally, Season 2 is my favorite from the franchise. Season 1 was also pretty good with the introduction of the main characters and other stuff going on. Season 3....ugh way too much things happening at once and clustered into a story that was hard to get used to.

I'll definitely look forward to the new movie though!

S2 are the best. But really. People, who hate S3 and Force are either lolicons or don't like the serious staff IMHO.

Not to mention that S3 is the best selling one. Almost twice comparing with S2.

The 3 season was slow, very slow, was better than the first one but it could be resolved with less episodes

While I don't think it's worthy of the "non-existent" status, my main problem is that the cast is way larger than it should be, resulting in the villains being mostly terrible and a massive lack of proper development for Erio and Caro. This all leads to a lackluster climax with too many conflicts and revelations to focus on.

If that Moviewalker site even completely reliable? It feels like something that Tsuzuki or someone directly related to the movie would confirm before moviewalker can place a date on it.

This idea that only lolicons could dislike StrikerS is one of the single silliest ideas in all of anime fandom. Why does it have to be all about a lolicon fetish, and not, say, feeling like it has terrible pacing, a completely uninteresting villain, a huge overreach on cast size that results in little to no characterization for most characters, and really poor production values?

It's the single most disappointed I've ever felt in a sequel in any medium, anime or otherwise.

(And I think adult NanoFate are hot as hell thanks very much. Doesn't save the show though!)

I could understand complaints about pacing or antagonist but poor production values... Are you kidding me?! They were at least on par with S2. And characterisation of main cast was good enough. Maybe Numbers and Lutecia's team had top few focus but not that it's such a big problem. And there's still a lot of additional material in manga and Drama CDs

As for the movie, well, I can't wait. I've seen the 1st and enjoyed it because of all the new scenes.

Good to know fans of the Nanoha franchise (including me) won't be kept waiting for any longer. I was anxious to know whether the movie would be released this year, so it's good to have confirmation. It's definitely been a while since I've watched seasons 1 to 3, and I've rewatched the first two movies a few times already. I'll probably watch them again before I watch the third movie :)

First 2 seasons of Nanoha were good, with S2 > S1. I actually liked season 3, although I do agree that the pacing was a bit slow and the scale of the cast expansion was a bit too much, but I was totally fine with it. I liked reading Force and Vivid as well, but I like the former better than the latter. Vivid has its own enjoyable charms, but I personally think the story development of Force is better than what Vivid has to offer. It makes it all the more unfortunate that Force is on hiatus now :( At least I can still enjoy reading Vivid.

Allow me to speak my opinion also.

S1 - Starts like a basic mahou-shoujo, really good.
S2 - This is more battles/action, my favorite season.
S3 - Many new characters are thrown without development and the villain is bad.
S4 (Vivid manga) - Feels like a side-story, definitely more for lolicon fans. Again many new characters are thrown and it's pretty much a battle tournament.
S5 (Force manga) - Poorly written, some things are recycled from A's in an inferior manner. The villains like in StrikerS are again not interesting enough.

So pretty much, Nanoha's newer installments aren't that good, so I hope this new third movie will make up some difference. And hoping that the creator won't use some new random characters with no development...

I don't think fans of StrikerS need to feel lonely. That season sold 22k, whereas the first two sold 4k and 11k respectively. A lot of that is just the pure expansion of the fanbase from season to season as years went by (I'm not particularly convinced a majority of fans would list StrikerS as their favorite season if asked, but there were a lot more Nanoha fans by that point) and it's only accelerated since then, but the numbers don't lie, it was wildly successful.

I really disliked it personally, but that doesn't mean I deny the obvious fact that it served the financial success of the franchise extremely well.

I would list it as my favorite. Yeah more development was needed and the plot could've used some major re-focusing, but I love the Nanoha universe so much that I just liked seeing the characters interact with each other, regardless of whether they were up against a villain or if the plot got "super srs" like in S1 and S2.

S3 > S2 >>>>>>>>>> S1. The films are on a different scale until I rewatch the first and actually sit down to watch the second.

So, the story does not matter? Besides, the author constantly focus on new characters on each of his installments and Nanoha/Fate aren't that important anymore. (At least in the 3rd movie they will be)

Then I suppose spin-off manga are also good for you.

Someone asked me to confirm this piece of news reported by MAL and I told him that the information was not reported correctly, not at least the caveat was not made sufficiently clear. The revelation was at best a mistaken leak, at worst some information that has no basis in truth and the real date would be subject to change. In fact the "source" that the otakomu site quoted was gone quite soon afterwards. I doubt either Stark700 or tsubasalover actually clicked into the walkerplus site ( http://movie.walkerplus.com/mv55107/ ) when they jumped to report the news. At the moment, until the formal news announcement this should be treated as nothing more than a rumor instead of confirmed news like the title "'Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 3rd: Reflection' to Debut in 2014" made it look like.
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

I was surprised when I found out Movie 3 is original content. If anything Season 3 is in desperate need of a remake. I liked the concept but the execution was lacking. It kept getting stuck in ruts from which it had to dig itself out. Basically it was focused on the wrong things. If they remade that into a decent movie I'd be very happy. But having more content explaining things that happened before Season 3 would be awesome. More Nanoha is a good thing in my book.

That's interesting.

Is the movie not going to take place between A's and StrikerS? What else can they do, if it has to be original content?

I think I'm in the minority (me and jmal I guess) who liked S1 over the 1st movie. The 1st movie botched the relationship between Nanoha and Fate, not leaving enough time between the fights. A's and its movie were still the best Nanoha media overall though. I'm not going to bother with StrikerS, Vivid or Force.
