Deadline Hollywood has reported that HBO is in talks with Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) to develop a TV series based on the manga Monster.

Del Toro will be co-writing with Stephen Thompson (best known for his writing on Doctor Who and Sherlock.) The project was originally planned for a feature film, but proved too complicated to fit into a normal feature-length time frame. Del Toro was eventually able to convince Naoki Urasawa, the author of Monster, to talk to HBO about a TV series instead.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm massively excited for this to take off. HUGE fan of Monster, both the manga and anime. Guillermo Del Toro has my vote for bringing Urasawa's story to life as well.

Personally, I'm super excited! Monster is one of those series that would totally work as a live action tv series.

I think it's pretty cool, I really hope it works. I might have to rewatch Monster pretty soon just to refresh myself of the story.

Monster can easily work as live action but since its HBO expect copious amounts of sex scenes. D: Also, who is sexy enough to make a good Johan?

That is true, I'll like to add as an avid fan of well-characterized villian ( Johan, Griffith, Hannibal, Joker in TDK ), I would like to see them nailed it right down to the aesthetics and mannerisms.

Whoa, this can't be real. Monster on HBO. Great news. I am really looking forward to watch this. It's good they decided to make this a series. If anyone can pull this of, than it's HBO.

plus Guillermo Del Toro his a pretty good director, he should also make a live action adaptation of Shingeki No Kyojin (Attack on Titan) since his also good at action movies like Hellboy and Pacific Rim

Should be interesting with HBO and Tel Doro/Thompson behind it. My main thought is how likely are they to run this for? The length of the anime would be about 2 seasons worth of hour long episodes, so I'm curious as to whether they will follow the manga closely or whether this will be a compressed miniseries or even an expanded storyline.

Highly overrated show, maybe it'll work better as a TV show?
Although they'd need keanu reeves to get that level of non-emotion on the MC.

if they americanize it (ie. set it in america, have all the characters be american etc.) then the whole thing will be worthless.
i'd like for them to cast an english speaking japanese man as tenma, and have the whole thing set in germany. but this won't happen.
it sounds good on paper, but when you think about it, it won't come close to the source material.

Given most HBO shows have 5 or more seasons....unless Del Toro specficially sets out to do this as one season miniseries, the likelyhood is it will be "dragged" on longer than the original. Which is fine by me tbh!

Urasawa's masterpiece adapted into a real live tv show? This must be a dream. If done the right way and good quality actors, high budget, this could be awesome. Also HBO, which means no censors.

Well it all depends of course. If it can keep me more interested than that of the anime, big plus.

Certainly, if they tried to throw it all into the US, it would likely be a disaster, but with the talent involved and this being HBO rather than network TV, it seems doubtful that they would try to take it out of Europe when it's rather important that it is set in Europe. The one change I could see them possibly making is changing Tenma's origin, and while I would prefer them not to do that, that isn't a particularly huge detail in the show, far less important than most other places. I wouldn't be surprised if that detail actually came down to whom they settle on to actually play Tenma.

The anime worked well with 74 episodes at roughly 20 minutes of content an episode. If the live action were to need a similar length, that works out to about 25 hours, which as HBO shows go close to a full hour thanks to the lack of commercials, the two ideal choices for length are probably 2 seasons of 13 episodes, or 3 seasons of 10 episodes.

If the anime pace is viewed as too slow for a thriller, it would be quite possible to speed it up some from the anime pace, in which case 2 seasons of 10-11 episodes would be sufficient. If they start going below 20 episodes total though, then they are probably rushing too much. They also certainty could go longer if they try to pad it, but it seems likely that any longer would likely need excessive padding to the source material to do so, which could only work out if the talent involved is able to add padding material with writing on par with the original.
