THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

I expected this to be alot worse than it actually was. I expected it to be on the level of MD Geist, but Violence Jack at least attempts to tell a story. Yeah it's horribly told, but at least the title character is interesting though sorely underused.

It only amused me a little, mainly because of how it reminded me of Hokuto no Ken.
Pure garbage anyhoo.

Hokuto no Ken gives you the best of both. 80's violence combined with an excellent story.

I did as the reviews recommended; watch the violence, gore and naked women for laughs. XD

I had heard about this and the other two OVAs a lot of the years. Mostly about the brutal violence and graphic sexual content. Well, it delivered on the former, although by today's standards, its not all that shocking, but I didn't see any of the later, perhaps I saw an edited version....That aside, I was pretty disappointed by this OVA. It seemed to lack any story really and pretty much served as an excuse for Jack to brutalize the bad guys. All in all a curio of history worth checking out once for laughs, but nothing more.
Every minute you are thinking of evil, you might have been thinking of good instead. Refuse to pander to a morbid interest in your own misdeeds. Pick yourself up, be sorry, shake yourself, and go on again.

This first episode didn't even really have gore...or anything at all. Complete waste of time. The plot makes no sense...

tl;dr If you want gore, watch the other episodes. This episode is just boring and useless and is not required to "understand" the other episodes.

The music was a bit strange for the setting. It was very light and fun sounding. I felt it should have been more brooding to help establish the supposed horror setting.

The character Violence Jack seems pretty interesting. Brutally kills violent, evil people, but helps the innocent and tries to leave them alive (note: tries). Sort of a messiah character. A dark messiah. Yes, those characteristics, along with the 'Mad Max' series inspired setting, make Jack like a darker version of Kenshirou from 'Hokuto no Ken', but two series being similar is not a bad thing on its own.

This OVA was not as violent or vulgar with its subject matter as I had been led to believe. With lots of speed lines and still frames, both the violence and the sexual abuse content felt very tame. Perhaps it is the other two OVAs where the controversy comes from.

EDIT: After watching the other two OVAs, 'Evil Town' and 'Hell's Wind-hen', yes, they are where the controversy comes from.

After watching this I can say that it was entertaining; it is violent, tragic and nihilistic, the animation is average, the music is laughable.
Not for the faint hearted, it is a silly premise of violence, sex and nihilism.

Garbage as advertised; barely redeeming even in the "so bad, it's good" way.

However, the highlights include:

1) The dub's line about Jack being a "chicken shit".
2) Jack pulling down a chopper to kill the villain.
3) Jack randomly transforming into "Zapdos" after saving the day.

I liked the story.
Jack is a badass, and he seems to have powers too, his eye healed and I suppose that his arm too.
Yumi betraying them because she was jealous was kinda lame though, she helped the ones who treated her like shit.

Jack is one sloppy fighter or did he do it on purpose when he pulled down that chopper with Ken and Mari onboard to kill Bomber. Mari was trying to save him and that's the thanks she gets? What a meathead. Ken looks like he's dead judging by the ending.

It also seems like Mari is going to follow golden bird Jack, what an ending for someone who said she only lived to find Ken.

7/10.

It is pretty obvious that Violence Jack did not stand up well the test of time. Violence Jack is renowned for its sexual violence, gory, brutal figths. Those elements are in the first movie but they are kind of tonned down to a regular standard of 80s. You will find nothing really brutal or gruesome.

Another problem is the character development. For example just look at Mari`s friend. She betrayed Mari and her boyfriend because she was jelaous. It came out of nothing. The rest of the cast are just thugs. No personality whatsoever.

The fights are basic and not very well choreographed. They even rehash the same scenes sometimes. It is a shame.

The graphic are dated but are not bad. Music is okay, some funky 80s rock.

And the top of the cake. The Main Character himself. It seems that everybody in the eighties thought that the less your character speak the more badass he is. Truly to that sentiment VJ spoke only one line during entire OVA. What a badass.

Hopefully the next parts will deliever.

Jack is those characters that Netflix like to adapt, What you wait?? kekeke (Yes, yes, bad joke xD)

Well, it could be worst, but have nice points, the best point is the principal character, a "human" (exactly I don´t know the word) with the powers of the Demon and that can transform in a Phoenix bird!!!! Yes, yes, amazing!!! kekeke
Another great point was the intro, the firsts 3 minutes, were cool, but here started the downhill in the development!!!! kekeke

Development was disastrous and the character feels to forget!!
The final, it was a great unknown, even now I don´t understand how the girl survive? why the girl is not sad for the die of the man that she was searching of this time? Why Jack has the power of Thor and the regeneration? .... Well, I could do questions all day...

4/10 because has nice points!!!! kekekke

So, the lesson we learned was, never help Violence Jack.

Wow, this was awful. The anime was barely coherent in its structure; it didn't help that the subtitles I had were absolute garbage. If you're going to have rape, I can't complain too much about lesbian rape; but the violence was actually not particularly well animated. I've seen pulp violence done much better elsewhere.

I came in expecting a good time seeing heads fly, blow up, and get crushed due to the Violence Jack's reputation as one of the most violent anime ever but I set up my expectations way too high while getting too little back in terms of entertainment value. The gore isn't even that pronounced and I know a lot more anime made around that time period that had more brutal death scenes than this and stuff from the 80s that I actually enjoyed a lot.

Pretty much every character even the main ones being forgettable to the point of you not needing to know their names didn't really help in making me feel anything when they somehow pass away, looking at you, Saru and Yumi. I don't even get the whole point why Jack was there or what he's even trying to do in the first place. He's just a big angry space gorilla that can turn into a bird before the credits rolled.

I might watch the other two movies but I've been turned off by the idea for the most part, thinking that I'd be better off just watching Fist of the North Star at this point, kek.

I like how you put it! Also, it is supposed to be an anime that started a whole genre so not watching it is to not learn—like not listening to Led Zepellin to learn about rock bands that came many years later.

I came in expecting some pulpy power fantasy and what I got instead was confusing violence and rape, I get that Nagai wanted to link it to devil man but violence jack (and I'll never get over how dumb that name sounds) having lighting strike his knife and turn into a bird was dumb

LMAO, that was fucking awful. The thing that's so infamous about this series, you know, the VIOLENCE, was just pathetic and/or comically bad/animated, which is the sole reason why I wanted to watch this. 1/10 for this garbage.

What a missed opportunity. The manga had so much material they could have drawn upon, yet they ignored it and made up their own story. The other 2 entries adapted specific manga storylines and were better for it.

It's bad considering TODAY'S STANDARD. But The amount of Cruelty is insane. Obviously animation, Characterization, Direction all could've improved and I would've given it a 4/10 from that Perspective,...... but I will give it a 7/10 with that Mindset of personally being in the 80s.........

I really liked this other than the end. It's a brutal world, so the rape and extreme violence are relevant. And these things are done by the bad guys who get their comeuppance from the titular character. I like how he regenerated at the end. It wasn't really clear to me how Mari lived but Kenichi died. A poetic justice of sorts for him aligning himself with the Slumking? I felt bad for Mari though.

Cool musick and colors and animation and settings.

Also, to be clear, in response to the other commentators, Violence Jack actually predates both Fist of the North Star and Mad Max.
