Them being shot at with deadly intent for several minutes by various guys, then once the woman turned on the light going "oh, we're actually friends, huh?" was SOOO bad. So what if some bullets had actually hit someone, maybe even killed? This is shit writing.

Rest of the episode was okay.
@MyllerPhiem what a genuinely bizarre thing to complain about

I'm trying to understand how the main guy gets a sentence of 888 years. We know that everytime he escaped the sentence doubled up and he started when it was only 3 years.

My math may be wrong but isn't it actually impossible to reach exactly 888? 😅
@Daredevil let's say he waits a year before the first escape attempt, leaving him with 2 years, but doubling it to 4. Then he immediately attempts again and doubles it to 8. He waits a year bringing it down to 7, then attempts 4 times within the next year, doubling it to 14, 28, 56, 112. But since a year has passed in all that, it's actually down to 111. Three more quick attempts double it to 222, 444, 888. That's just one way he could get there. And that's just the sequence that requires the fewest number of attempts (9) in the least time (under 4 years).

They're doing the action comedy well. So, all of them have taken Hapna and have their own lives at stake! As for who's the biggest criminal, well I'm sure a bunch of them are not telling the whole truth.

Loved that part where all the alphabet agencies were declaring

FBI! Put down your Guns!
DEA! Put down your Guns!

and Axel shouts LAZARUS! Put down your Guns! While pointing his "finger" gun at them. LMAO!

The action is good, the story is going to be slowly teased out.

How does a 3 year sentence which gets doubled every time he escapes land on a value of 888 is something I can't understand. The 8th time he escaped it would have been 768 years and then it would have doubled to 1500+. The only way I can think is if his remaining sentence was doubled so if he served 1 of the 3 years then they doubled the remaining 2. And then then it was 4 and if he again escaped after a few months, it became 7.xx or something like that....
@HellindiuM
Come on.. Pry got charged for other stuff during the escape....

Great episode! Definitely pumped for this series.

The plot is too early to critique at this point, but something I've noticed about the characters is how bland they are.

In most Watanabe anime, like Cowboy bebop, Samurai champloo, space dandy, Carole & Tuesday, heck even Terror in Resonance, there's something interesting about the main cast. In the previous 4 examples, its that they give off this sense of energy that makes their interactions with one another fun to watch. In the case of Terror, its the mystery behind them that makes me want to keep watching to find out more.

But in Lazarus, the characters just bore me. There's no fun character dynamics so far and they just seem very one note. Hopefully that changes, but so far I just get bored watching Axel and crew. I hope Watanabe can cook because his last two anime were very disappointing and I want him to create something good again.

Some brilliant moments, a sequence of coincidences straight out of a comedy sketch, great dynamic showing how the wider world deals with the consequences of the main plot, excellent action scenes with a human touch (no over-choreographed fights or unreal perfection)... but the core story itself felt surprisingly weak. ψ(._. )>

The action is ramping up as the members of Lazarus split up on multiple clues to Skinner's location. The intro really makes me feel the vibes I felt when I watched Cowboy BeBop. Getting to know more about how the characters got placed into Lazarus was nice as well.

So boring I had to watch Koupen-chan just to feel something.

Why do the Eng VAs sound like they're watching paint dry? Dry and bored delivery. Some exceptions but overall the episode was unnecessarily slow I found it hard not to fall asleep.

Plot wise still forgettable. Don't get me wrong, the premise is interesting, but so far I have no reason to care about anyone in this show. They didn't bring up anything that we didn't already know and it honestly feels like a waste of an episode.

Music slaps once again, the action is good when it happens (just a lot of running around but whatever) but everything else is very meh.

I really loved this episode—it was super enjoyable...

For me, this is the anime of the season, Everything about it is amazing: the script, the characters, the production, the art—even the story is genuinely interesting.

There might be a few minor annoyances, but overall, MAPPA and Watanabe Shinichirou really put their heart into this project...

I'm excited for the rest.

This episode wasn't as action packed as the last one, as it was expected, because we needed a bit more closure about the plot before continuing with the anime.
We got to see a bit more of each character, and even learn their connections to the group. It really seems like all of them were criminals, one way or another, and Axel actually was only arrested to serve 3 years in jail, but since he was always escaping jail, that sentence continue to grow.
Talking about Axel, he does seem like to be quite, well, crazy. He sure isn't afraid of good action scenes, and was able to attack all of those men, without the help of a weapon.

Lazarus went off into 2 places, where they thought that would find Skinner, but it's obviously not going to be that easy, and this is for sure going to be a quest that will last for quite some episodes. It's funny how the debt collectors were like "bro, you saw how much he's in debt with us too?" by the end.

Overall, the episode was really enjoyable, and the animation continued to be good! I feel like the show has quite the possibility to grow much more than what it is now, the cast of characters is coming together nicely, and the show as a clear direction for the anime.

Also, this episode I was able to watch the episode with the Japanese dub, and yes, the old lady doesn't sound like a robot anymore! A win is a win! ALso, Axel sounds exactly like I would expect with his Japanese voice actor (Mamory Miyano is going strong this season, he takes a big role in the 3 anime I am watching this season).

Really curious to see how this anime will develop!

Edit: Forgot to mention, but we finally got the opening, and it was ok, it's a instrumental only opening though. Also, the cat that appeared in the episode many times is one of the best characters so far, I'm afraid.

better than ep 1, REALLY GOOD ANIMATION! Story's picking up pace but DEAR GOD DO I WISH THE CHARACTER DESIGNS/PERSONALITIES WERE MORE UNIQUE/STYLIZED! I'm sorry but compare the character designs from Bebop or Champloo to this! NIGHT AND DAY, if you were to tell me that this was made by a western animation studio instead of a Japanese one and was just influenced by anime, I'd believe you!

In Champloo and Beboob you could tell it was still an anime that was influenced by western media. BUT IT SEEMS LIKE THE OTHER WAY AROUND!! Still though, sakuga animation, and I must admit that the mystery is....mysterious O.o

and i don't mind if politics is presented in anime at all, but i hate it if current political topics that is being propagated IRL is also being propagated in anime

Knowing Watanabe's series formula from all his other series, this is a pretty familiar throw away episode that he seems to love to do. Just enough plot to keep the story moving forward but really a whole lot of nothing. Actually, the whole world seems less lived in then his other series. Usually you feel like there is bustling life, but this one is oddly dead even though it is not a post-apocalyptic world. I really hope that the story starts moving forward in episode 3.

I do wish they had stayed away from the comedic element for this series. None of it seems to be landing with me at all this time. The weird way the cops and FBIs cars crisscrossed to make it to the bunker, the silly interview with the gardener, and just the overall interactions. This would be a lot better if it was 95% serious with only a few well timed quips. The English dub is still really annoying, I will definitely rewatch this when it comes out in Japanese.

As for the end of the episode I got a distinct Satoshi Kon vibe from that reveal. So that is pretty neat.

Overall, I am not convinced I am going to enjoy this yet but I am willing to persevere for a while.

Nice to see Lavrov and Nebenzya still at work after 19 years, lmao. But seriously, what happened to people by 2044 if the UN is literally falling apart because the local mix of Jobs and Keanu is giving a one climate speech?

@Linebeck_III If we're talking about it, his Wikipedia article is more reminiscent of a fandom wiki, given the more stylish design and unusual amount of small details and personal photos. Even if we imagine that the guy was such a Buddha of modern technology that he even placed all the information about him under a Creative Commons license.

It’s crazy how one episode can change your entire perspective on a story or character. Growing up is realising Dr. Skinner is the good guy and humanity are the bad guys.

Dude dedicated his entire life to the betterment and advancement of the human race, didn’t even patent all the lifesaving medicines and inventions he made and genuinely would give the shirt off his back to a stranger, yet the moment he started preaching about shit that would impact the top 1 percent’s profits like combatting climate change, everyone laughed at and ignored him. The dude lauded as the next Einstein who had done so much for the world, but you doubt him on this lmao. The US walking out of that UN assembly speech on climate change had me cracking up because it’s sadly all too real.

Wiping out humanity with a miracle drug might seem a little harsh, but in Skinner’s mind he’s not doing anything humanity aren’t already doing to themselves. He told them The North Pole is literally gonna melt in 3 years which would mean the end of life as we know it and they ignored em but want to act all scared after he revealed that a drug would do the same 😂 yea we stand with Skinner.

The Lazarus crew are coming together well, Axel continues to be funny af. “We’re like the avengers”, uh more like the thunderbolts or suicide squad actually buddy lol. Christine kicking him out the car when he said how much time he was serving in prison had me dying too. Generally felt like a set up episode to introduce us to Lazarus team dynamic and give context on Skinner’s actions. It was fun tho.

Chad Stahelski’s involvement starts with this episode as well, not a ton of fights today, but you could see the influence briefly. Can’t wait to see what they cook up later.

A few plotholes here:

If you do the math for the MC's prison sentence he escaped 8.2 times. (doesn't add up)

How did they think that Mr. Koboyashi was skinner at all? He looks almost nothing like him, and why would Skinner hide in an unlocked bunker with seemingly one exit that was unlocked, while sitting incapacitated on a chair? (also if skinner is supposed to be this super genius guy, why would they think he would be stupid enough to make himself trackable with like 5 mins of deep dive research?)

My takeaway from this episode is that Mr Skinner is living happily in his own house disguised as his gardener while these guys will be spending the next ten episodes with filler action sequences finding this out.

I don't know guys what we expected from Shinichiro Watanabe but this anime feels extremely uninspired to me at this moment.

Noted, Lazarus is the Suicide Squad minus the typical comic book powers. Funny that as I thought that they mentioned The Avengers

Scientist was pretty prepared to drop off the map for the cure huh, only one trace from years ago. But all adventures need a starting point (even tho obviously he won't be right there). Nice to get to know the rest of the crew a little more on the trip. Noted that the woman's a hacker.

Respect the scientist dude setting up decoys. Welp, surely another group I'd backing him to gather 100,000 fakes. Or he promised them the cure on his own..

With the ending sequence of the episode we see axel getting up while everyone else is down. Axel asks whether anyone used hapna but then hesitated his response. If he has been in prison for at least 3 years, its possible that he never had a chance to take it so hes gonna be the only one not dying.
