damn! that was... whew... :O one of the best 1st episodes of anime i think i've seen in 30+ years.

it was like MAPPA grabbed GoHands' crazy whackafreakindoodledoo camera angle flips/rotations/panning... and improved upon it!

it was pretty, awesome soundtrack, premise was kickazz, storytelling not just dialogue but visually told/shown, the technical/mecha/back n foregrounds/vehicles work was a smidge TOO CGA but definitely LOVELY and kinda-sorta well blended but in places too obvious, and the fight choreography was awesome!

definitely an entertaining 1st ep. they've hooked me hard with this one! :D
just an ol school American otaku enjoyin the life. don't sass me kiddies, i've been otaku probably since before you were born. leave me in peace and i won't bother you either.

First ep was really good! Surprised how much I enjoyed it. The action was great, with good sense of physicality, thought that stuff can bore me without proper characterization. But I felt like we got a good grasp on all the different personalities and how they jive together. It felt natural and fun. Also I just really like the art style and character design. Nothing over the top, but just really nice. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

I loved the animation so much, and I'm hoping that for once Mappa does a good anime original, so the great animation doesn't go for waste. When I was watching this I was like it reminds me of cowboy Bebop to find out that they share the same director Watanabe Shinichirou.

Promising premise, but why did the whole episode have to be a chasing sequence? Pretty boring. No characters, barely any worldbuilding, just action...

The animation and choreography quality stood out quite a bit with this first episode of Lazarus, but I don't know yet about the story so far. Felt the chase took a bit too much time in the episode and lost some steam towards the end. Hopefully the story's got some good substance to it with upcoming episodes but for now, am proceeding with caution. The Cowboy Bebop influences are very, very present here, almost a bit too much but who knows what Watanabe's got cooking in future episodes.

A somewhat impressive first episode, with great art, animation, music and voice work, but not an equally strong plot.

I do not particularly object to the central premise of a globally available painkiller (+ cure-all drug per MAL's blurb) not having thoroughly vetted and tested for 3 full years, since that's the main anchor; without it the story does not work.

To me the problems started with Axel's prison escape. It was a firearm aided prison escape, as we all saw. The cardinal rule of prisons, anywhere and everywhere, in the past, now and forever is this: NO FIREARMS. A rule Shinichirou Watanabe casually broke, as a plot device to make Axel's escape possible.

Correction officers are not cops, they're souped up security guards. Firearms are strictly prohibited in all prisons, because they contribute to nothing and place the lives of everyone -inmates, guards, visitors- in danger. And can also aid in escapes by taking a hostage, as Axel did with that lady.

As for Axel's skills, what we saw was not mere parkour; it was the mother, father and grandparents of super duperly unrealistic parkour on triple steroids. No human could survive 1/5 of the stunts he pulled, and yet he flew through everything without a single scratch or bruise.

I still like him though - or I am biased due to his VA, not sure 😊

Solid start, Axel running around was pretty entertaining. The premise is very interesting, and the behavior of the people during an apocalypse-like situation is accurate and believable.
I find the woman recording Axel while he fights funny

The animation is good but I'm not a fan of how they did the exposition dump, and we're being introduced to a lot of characters very quickly. Seems rather rushed. Some of the dialog also felt incredibly awkward.

You know, I don't mind if the only purpose of the story is to prop up the action like in John Wick; the action is pretty good. Just plz don't let it be like Ninja Kamui. That would be horrifying.

11/10 Animation, genuinely appalled at the sheer complexity of backgrounds and the amount of POV shots.

8.5/10 Concept : Dystopian society with an evil genius and a countdown is solid

7/10 Writing : Nothing out of ordinary but it hasn't done anything wrong so far

Overal : 8.4 - 8.8 /10

I'm not really a fan of this kind of art style or anime in general, regardless of the story.

By nature, I don’t usually care much about animation quality or sound design, but let's be honest, the episode was absolutely amazing. A visual masterpiece, even if it wasn’t the highest quality possible.

I feel like I’ve missed shows that involve running from the police, jumping off tall buildings, and that kind of thrill… I genuinely enjoyed the episode, even though the story still feels mysterious. I need to watch the next episode to get a better grasp of the anime.
I love slice-of-life works.

You can dress up a horse and give it fake wings, but it will still be a horse. Both Lazarus and the new Devil May Cry are like that. You can put the best animation in the world on a bad script, but it will still be a bad script. And the script of Lazarus is so full of holes that it looks like it came from Snow White's screenwriter's desk. They ignore the rigorous inspection of laboratory procedures for the approval of new drugs; both series also have their Mary Sue characters who are so overpowered that they could replace the main characters and who, coincidentally, have the main characters captured by their respective Maries. It’s an issue that affects any script that takes place in the West or is inspired by the West. In the end, none of these works are for me. Both were prematurely canceled.

You know the animation is good, the soundtrack is fine, but there is something lacking from the English dub, like the voice actors aren't really trying. It's for this reason I am scoring Lazarus a tentative 6/10.

That was the most plot armored, ridiculous prison break i've ever seen. The guy took a couple of guards down and he was out in a heart beat. How did he get away from the main building? How the hell did he get to the city? I had high hopes but the script feels amateurish.

So basically, Watanabe went on youtube, came across a STORROR video and said to him "damn those dudes kinda nasty, let me make a whole show about a dude doing parkour" and that's why the first episode of Lazarus is at least 12 minutes of one guy just runnin across buildings.

Watanabe is just too obsessed with his past works, even the main piece of promo he used in interview was just "this is my best show ever, better than cowboy bebop", what he didn't realized is that he's not the one to decide this, he claimed the same about Carole&Tuesday.
The biggest offender of this is the main character he gives us this time which is simply Mugen Spike, he moves and fights like Mugen but has the sassiness and looks of Spike. I mean he even DRESSED like a mix of the two, he wears that full dark color jacket+pants combo but unlike spike his undershirt is red like Mugen's vest. It's just so blatant and is the single piece of evidence this show, no matter how much goodwill it was created with, will not be groundbreaking, especially compared to Bebop and Champloo, it's just feels like Watanabe wants to make his masterpiece again but wihout the honesty and desire, he doesn't wan't to create new things he wants to live again his past success.

Also I didn't notice at first but I see you mf putting the Uchida siblings as a big sisters and little brothers you're such a fcking try hard Watanabe or whoever decided of that cast come on what is this seiyuubait cast. On top with Your Forma having the Hanakana/Kensho couple as the main characters, this season really is the seiyuufan pandering season.

Leave it to drugs to turn the world upside down. Scientist really introduced poison to the market and let nature take its course. Suppose making yourself the #1 target for the world is a way of rallying the world together.

Guess I have to take that back, people want to riot 💀 why they do that instead of finding the scientist nobody knows. Now I can imagine the one anti-vaxxer in the crowd who never took this miracle drug living in peace while the world burns.

Axel really does fit the mold of realistic dandys. Aside from the amount of acrobatics he was showing off in his jail escape. That was impressive, to say the least. And dude seems to have limyless energy as he parkours his way through almost every obstacle.

The layered meaning to names is real. Babylon City of all names, while the scientist calls themselves the trumpet.

That woman had his number XD rip. Overall, this ep was a good way to get the ball rolling.

MAPPA is back with another banger this season! It's rare for MAPPA to make an original anime—without any source material like an LN or manga. From the first episode alone, Lazarus has given a positive impression. Starting from its liquid-smooth fight scenes to even the details in its stunning drawings. Definitely can't wait to watch the continuation!
