Compared to the 1979 version, is this first episode better or worse? And I'd also like to know if 25 episodes (625 minutes) are enough to adapt the original novel, considering the previous version lasted 50 episodes (1000 minutes). Is it a good idea to watch the previous version or watch this version first and then the previous one?

Just watch it for what it is. There is no need to compare this version to another anime version of the story. The tale of Anne of Green Gables has been around since 1908; there are literally dozens of film productions of the story. If you need background, read the book. It's a wonderful children's story. I've watched this new adaptation and found it charming and think it will be a nice, easy view for this season. I can expect at least two seasons (50 episodes) since the synopsis says it will only cover Anne's age 11 through mid-teens years.

It’s hard to tell after just one episode, and I never read the novel. I do recommend watching the original. The emotions of each scene are more realized in the 1979 series, and the characterization is better for it. Specifically looking at the character of Marilla, even just in this first episode I can feel a difference in how her development is going.

Did you hear me?

Answering the first question: I think it depends. Because the animation is great, it has incredible visuals and good direction, maybe a fast pace, but it's still very, very good and enjoyable to watch in my opinion.

I'm sure the pace will be faster the thing that elevated the '79 version for me was the dub actress for Anne she did a remarkable job. can't be easy voicing a character like Anne with non stop talking

I never got to finish the '79 version, so my comparisson might be lacking. That said:

I give kudos for this new version coloring, lighting, shading and movement, for the beautifully made backgrounds and landscapes, the nice character design, creative shot choices from the director, the performance of the voice actors.

In the first episode, I liked that it doesn't have the voice over explaining whats going on, we just get to see their feeling throw the action of the characters. I mean, things like in the '79 before Matthew picks Anne from the train station the voice over already tells that the sibling were specting a boy and in this new version we only get Marilla talking briefly about it with Rachel, and really is know when they get to Green Gables. Some small narrative choices that I thought enriches the viewer experience.

It's a bold decision to reebot an anime which the first version was directed by Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Kaguya), but I think it was a beautifull start to a new version of this well known and loved story...

Thank you all so much for clearing up my doubts. I think I'll follow your advice and enjoy this version of the anime, which has beautiful animation. I'll also follow @otusan_pops's advice and read the original novel to get a more complete background on the story. Thank you all again. ❤️🐝

Much worse, but because Isao Takahata was able to transmit the message in a majestic way. This anime doesnt have someone as skilled as him behind the scenes. You can see it in for example the pace, this adaptation kills most of Anne's dialogues which made her interesting enough for Matthew and Marilla to keep her, she didnt need to look pity and miserable like the direction make it look like here. Another downgrade is the atmosphere, here although the colors are pretty its style is pretty generic like you are not in the 1800s Canada. I'd recommend more the 79s since this one is pretty half-cooked.

There’s a difference between the two anime adaptations. The original adaptation felt much more detailed and attentive. Its slower pace allowed for a deeper exploration of Anne’s character and the world around her. If you're truly interested in understanding Anne as a person and seeing the world through her eyes, the original anime is likely the better choice.

In contrast, the newer adaptation moves at a much faster pace. For example, what took five episodes to cover in the original was condensed into just the first episode of the new version. While there are a few new scenes that add depth to Anne’s character, they don't significantly alter the outcome of the story.

That said, Anne of Green Gables has seen many adaptations over the years. A few changes here and there are understandable—as long as the core story remains intact. It’s perfectly fine to adapt things a bit differently. The newer version seems to place more emphasis on the animation, and I think that’s a valid creative choice as well.

@Otosan_Pops The synopsis is the same as the 1979 anime. I read that this new version will adapt the first 3 books. There are few episodes for a lot of content from the books.

The 1979 anime is practically one episode for every chapter of the book. This new anime squeezed 6 chapters of the book and 5 episodes of the old anime into the first episode, a lot of Anne's dialogue was cut.

It's 5x faster than the first anime. Not that it's a disservice to the story but you do get so much more out of the first one. Definitely worth going back to once this one is done

^Massively this.

The '79 version destroys this soulless mess like no tomorrow. The pacing is atrocious, the visual presentation of Green Gables falls flat (which is not just a selling point, but also an important connecting link to Anne's whole character) and Anne is nothing more here than your average 546th random genki anime girl.

@Junchi They also changed Marilla who is more strait-laced and strict, she doesnt easily admit things like here. And Diana isnt the same too. This version sacrifice characterization to make story go faster. 😔

@Junchi @Turn_A_Blum took it outta my mouth. I rewatched the first 10 mins of '79 and compared to the first 10 of THIS version.

I really wanted to love this new show, but the old one just beats it in every way.
Theres so much missing context and the pacing is way too fast, the story of Anne is much better told in a slow and beautiful way.
Im usually not even a fan of old shows, but the 1979 version holds up to this day, its amazing, it has so much care and feelings put into it.
I will be continuing the old show instead of this one.
The only way this new show would have value, is if it continues the old shows story! If this also serves as a sequel halfway through, which I think it will, then Ill be giving it another try!
