Is it easy enough to understand when you've not seen the full anime? I want to watch an anime movie from 1977.

I would recommend against it since around 40 minutes, it starts narrating important action scenes from the anime to skip forward instead of letting them play out just in a cut fashion. Imagine it like a long recap episode

If you would like a movie recut from a 70s series that you can watch without having seen the series first, I would recommend the Mobile Suit Gundam trilogy

I disagree with the previous poster and think the Yamato movies are better than the TV versions - the movie length just suits the content better. Whatever you do definitely don't watch the Gundam movies before the TV version
