Acclaimed animation director Masaaki Yuasa has announced the establishment of his new animation studio, ame pippin, marking his return to the industry after a three-year hiatus. The studio, officially launched on February 18, brings together key industry players, including Asmik Ace, Aniplex, and CoMix Wave Films, as strategic partners.

Yuasa, known for his distinctive and innovative approach to animation, has previously directed critically acclaimed works such as Mind Game, Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (The Tatami Galaxy), Ping Pong the Animation, and Devilman: Crybaby. He co-founded Science SARU in 2013, leading the studio as president until his departure in 2020. Following the release of Inu-Ou (Inu-Oh) in 2022, he stepped away from active production, citing the need for rest and preparation for future projects.

The involvement of Asmik Ace, Aniplex, and CoMix Wave Films strengthens ame pippin's position in the industry. Asmik Ace has a longstanding relationship with Yuasa, having supported his works from Mind Game to Inu-Ou. Aniplex, which co-produced Inu-Ou and Devilman: Crybaby, brings extensive experience in anime production and distribution. Meanwhile, CoMix Wave Films, best known for producing Makoto Shinkai's films, adds another layer of expertise, having also been involved in Inu-Ou's production committee.

Yuasa expressed his vision for ame pippin as a space for fresh creativity and collaboration, stating that the studio aims to embrace flexibility and innovation in entertainment. While specific projects have yet to be announced, the establishment of ame pippin signals an exciting new chapter in Yuasa's career.

I didn't understand. Why would he create a whole new studio if he left his former only to relax? Moreover, he was a co-creator of SARU.

apparently Yuasa had conflct with Science Saru management and decided to leave the studio and go on hiatus. Now he's back and looks like he wants to start with fresh team/studio.

@zsrrknight I see. I heard that he retired during the creation of the Nihon Chinbotsu's remake, but did not know the details.

Science SARU got bought by a big corporation, their pipeline is filled with manga adaptations (over half of them shonen), and Yuasa, the incredible creative that brought them fame with his anime originals, is now gone... yeah they're dead, just corpo slop from now on, goodbye to their days of experimental anime.

Ah man. My whole fucking w/ Science Saru was because it's the "Masaaki Yuasa" studio. I mean it still produces top-tier content but I liked that it was more out-there than reined-in. If it becomes another studio for outsourcing shonen adaptations to that's lame.
