I came here to see if anyone has explained it. I've been reading everyone's posts for around an hour and think I got to the 8th page of this discussion before giving up.
The thing is, I can't even explain what it is that I don't understand, because it's just too deep. The scene with Yui, Yukino and Hachiman in the club room. "you didn't tell me so how can I understand?" "But you didn't tell me either" and so on.. Tell them what? What is everyone crying about? I have watched every episode extensively, but I just can't grasp why everyone is so tense and distant with each other. All this stuff about pretending everything's okay after "back then". What is "back then"? Hachiman's social suicide for Tobe? Hachiman does stuff like that all the time and it's never affected Yui and Yukino that much before. Why did things suddenly become so dramatic? I still can't wrap my head around episode 4, and I kept watching more episodes to see if that would clear things up, but this episode has just thrown a spanner in the works.

What does Yukino means about that? Does she think that when Hachiman said that he wants something genuine he meant that he didn’t feel anything genuine about their club before? So that’s what he wanted and were looking for? I’m also trying to search for an answer about their conversation especially between Yui and Yukino lol it doesn’t make sense to me, or am I not paying much attention lol.

i don't understand
i'm actually feeling a disconnect due to this and it has started to happen only around ep 4.
I am also extremely bad at understanding what's going on here, hence
my previous post for s02e05. But I'll try to write out
my understanding anyway, even if just to think out loud.
All problems in the relationships between the members of the Volunteer Service Club stem from the same core issue – lack of sincerity. It is also the root cause of all of them being in the club. Let's start from the simplest one.
- Yuigahama Yui – she is in the club because she likes Hachiman and wants to become closer to him. The cookies at the very start, trying to keep the club together during the election, asking Hachiman to walk to the club together, etc. Yui lacks confidence in herself, so she cannot just confess to Hachiman. Therefore, to cope with this she's trying her best to become his friend, without revealing her true feelings. She can't be sincere with him, and she couldn't be sincere with Yumiko Miura (the popular girl).
- Hachiman Hikigaya – as victim of bullying from classmates in middle school, he developed extremely nihilistic and misanthropic world view. This lead to him being isolated in high school. Hachiman's inner monologue often complains about people not being sincere, but he isn't being honest with himself in that he doesn't acknowledge his own wishes, and keeps sacrificing himself to help others while worsening his own situation. Even though he got close to other club members, he didn't allow himself trying to save the club for himself during the Student Council election until his little sister gave him an external reason to do it.
- Yukinoshita Yukino – she is the hardest to understand by far. Her words are extremely cryptic, and her thoughts are even a bigger mystery to me. The reason the teacher (Shizuka Hiratsuka) put her in the club is isolation from peers, caused by the cold personality mask she puts on. My best guess is that this is caused by self-imposed standards trying to follow the steps of and to emulate her older sister, Haruno. The Yukinoshita family is shown to be wealthy and of high status (Yukino is driven by a personal driver in a fancy black car, their father is in the parlament), so the parents definitely also put pressure on Yukino even though it's never been mentioned, as far as I remember (see also the weird situation where only the older sister appears at social events – family-imposed isolation of Yukino).
For all three the lack of sincerity means that they can't properly communicate their feelings, they can't rely on social support from family and friends, they don't have people they trust, and they struggle in development of their interpersonal relationships.
P.S. Forgot to point out that in this episode, Hachiman is the first to start to break out of his shell. He discloses his intimate wish, even though he doesn't fully admit his own shortcomings yet.
