Sakamoto Days Episode 1 Discussion

@HorsePersonMan The adaptation got greenlit pretty early, i guess at the time where other studios were busy and TMS was pretty much the only choice. Now we've got an adaptation that is full of speedlines, slow-mo, flashy lights and wind trails. It's basically just full of effects to make up for the stiff movement. I honestly don't have a clue on why Watanabe Masaki was picked as the director, it doesn't even seem like he has that much experience on the role. Everything just seems to be done just to be done.

TMS's best staff isn't even on SD as there's the new Lupin movie coming out and Dr.Stone is also airing at the moment.

People don't even try to look at the faults, they just accept it. Some don't even see it and think this is the best thing ever.

Animation sucks and the plot is very unoriginal and boring. Probably won't continue watching this.

It has everything to do with it, because sakadays deserves the best treatment but since your favourite manga/anime got the treatment you wanted, you could care less what this gets. You not even denying what I said is proof enough.

You would silence criticism to boost your ego, you could care less if this got a better treatment of any sort, why? Because you are not a FAN.

The funny thing I never said it had no sakuga or bad animation. I said “mid”, a word that shouldn’t be in this kind of adaptation. You put false statements on people’s mouth to silence any constructive criticism. You are the embodiment of hypocrisy itself.

I personally do not understand all the hate the animation style is getting here. This is a comedy story that has action not the other way around. The art style is working fine for me and the action sequences were great, to do more like Dandadan, Chainsaw Man, or Ufotable would take away from the comedy elements the story is built upon. Overall this was a quality episode and a great first step into the world of Sakamoto Days. I read the first few chapters and I am happy to be going into the rest of the season blind.

That's what Spy x Family is as well, and it's safe to say that show had fancier animation and more overall polish than this show. And I don't think the quality took away from the comedy in that case (regardless of whether it's actually funny or not).

From the sound of it, Sakamoto Days the manga does have good action (or will have it later in the story at least). Even if the episode itself doesn't really need it, you expect action shows to make an impression with their premieres.

It's on Shounen Jump, too, so it absolutely will draw comparisons to stuff like Chainsaw Man and Demon Slayer that you mentioned.

I thought the episode was fine, but I can't really fault people from feeling frustrated and anxious, either.

@perseii Demon Slayer manga has trash art compared to what Ufotable did for it. Also, it only got the praise like it did after episode 18 or 19 (can't remember which one). As far as the care being given to Sakamoto Day, I do not see an issue with it as it resembles the manga I remember reading very much and seems to adapt the first chapter very well by comparison.

I also thought the episode was fine which is why I feel that it being trashed by its own fanbase is a bit funny and out of place. Not everything needs to be Fate level when it comes to animation there is a time and place for it and this series, from what I remember reading, is not it.

Actually, Demon Slayer might be what changed people's expectations. "A popular Shounen Jump action manga adaptation must be absolutely stellar quality at all times." Whether the manga art is good or not is almost beside the point these days, it feels like.

Even if Demon Slayer wasn't praised to high heavens in the earlier episodes, I still think those episodes looked great. Episode 19 just blew up on social media is all. I wonder if people would've complained about the animation quality if Demon Slayer Episode 1 aired today...

I understood you liked the episode, I was trying to think from a disgruntled fan's perspective.
