Ok I get what you meant now, I just felt that comment was a bit excessive ahahah.

As for why Gurren Laganna is so well recieved there are many different reasons:

-it’s a love letter to the Super Robot genre, very popular in the 90s, so most people that liked that style probbaly appreciate GL.

-many people probably watched when they were around the same age as the mc or when someone important went missing, so they probably found it very easy to relate.

-it’s not about the “power of friendship”, it’s about self confidence that in the case of mc was misplaced in other characters instead of himself up until ep 11 if I remember correctly.

-most people don’t start with the expectations of great twists or complex plot, GL wants to tell the story of a mc influenced by others’ ideals. Don’t get me wrong there are twists and plot but they are more in the form of characters death or expansion of the lore rather than something like Code Geass.

-the structure of the show and the symbolisms fits very well what it wants to convey, there are some themes related to maturity in facing dreadful situations, the responsabilities of humanity, the convergence and acceptance of opposite ideals.
But all of this is wrapped in an over the top action show, if this first layer isn’t your cup of thea is hard to appreciate the rest of the show, it makes everything less belivable.

-production value is high, there’s no denying here, besides 1 or 2 episodes the show is well animated and it has its own unique style. It still looks quite new despite being from 2007.

There is more probably but right now that’s what come off the top of my head.
As for me, I liked all of the elements above, plus I appreciate when a series has big tonal shifts but can still keeps its ground on emotional moments when necessary.
I even knew what the final battle was going to look like (spoilers usually are a big deal to me, as they lower my enjoyement) but I was still captured by the characters, the lore and the weird over the top feel of the world.

On a side note, yeah Ichigo wasn’t bad, and about the mystery of DITF… weren’t those aliens just a cheap copy of Anti-Spiral that came out with no build-up? I thought they should have kept things more grounded that times around.

I see
tbh most of these reasons have no value to me or make me hate it even more like I already said I hate mecha and it doesn't matter if its quality was considered good in its year, I watched this in 2020 not 2007, I hate symbolism and lack of sense/logic so it's certainly not for me.

many people probably watched when they were around the same age as the mc or when someone important went missing, so they probably found it very easy to relate.

well, this probably could mean that it's oriented toward younger audiences? I already said it was childish in my og comment xD

and for ditf, I wasn't talking about the villains, there was some cool mystery around ep 13-16 I think but it doesn't really matter.
and even If I was talking about them, I watched ditf before kill la kill and ttgl so for me it was the first one to have this idea :D

makes sense, everyone is looking for different things in a show so I get why the positive wouldn't matter if they are not appealing to you.

Kinda? It's a coming of age story so I think it can be oriented towards a wide age group, like from 14/15 to 20 something mainly. Even my parents liked it and they are well over that range so it's not a strict rule of course.

Mh I don't get this, the animation itself is good even for today standards. If we want to look at it objectively it had, and still has, an impressive amount of sakuga moments compared to most anime but I think t's the artstyle that might be unappealing to some.

well that ending was really fucking anti climactic. also they really stretched the end to the point where you could easily cut at least a couple episodes worth of stuff. if we talk about everything up to the time skip then its a very solid 9/10 but counting everything that followed it I cant give anything higher than very weak just barely 7/10 especially with that ending. also I didn't really like or care about the side characters more specifically the twins and the dude with them big ass lips who's only job was to just press the button to shoot the guns.

Yeah, this was terrible all-around. For a series that tries to be so unpredictable and impressive it ends up being dull and foreseeable. I'm glad its over. Barebones character cast, terrible development, bad everything.

Episode: 1/5
The whole anime: 1/10

The whole anime, although it didn't quite meet my expectations, looking at how good a reputation it enjoys, was cool, the first 7 episodes weren't particularly interesting, the plot slowly picked up and if it weren't for Kamina's charisma, I probably would have abandoned it, but later on the plot, although still naive and silly, was much more interesting, yes.. we lost Kamina but the MC's development compensated for that (although it was too fast and simple), and Nia, some people were annoyed by her, for me it was the most touching thing in the world (especially her gentle voice) and her character made everything much more enjoyable, it's a shame that there was so little of her later. As for the time jump, the whole politics and artificial drama didn't quite convince me, mainly looking at how naive it all was before, but ok... when we returned to the crazy action, the absurdity of which was multiplied by X10, I started to get excited again, it was great to watch how from the mundane level, it all evolved to the intergalactic level, the anime set the bar higher and higher and it was impossible to get bored xD

As for the ending itself... I don't understand why Simon had to leave, what for? I would have preferred Nia to live and break through the ceilings together with Simon. Such a forced bittersweet ending doesn't appeal to me, but overall, as I said, I liked the whole thing and I'm glad I finally caught up with this classic.

Finally I've watched Gurren Lagann all the way to the end, it's been an awesome ride and I would honestly it's the favourite anime from Gainax for me. But I do have an issue with the finale, it wasn't bad all the way through but I do have a problem with the end scene with Nia mainly because it defeats the whole purpose of the entire show as well as Simon’s characterization. On one hand the ending after the final battle is bad to me but on the other hand, I can't see any other way it could've gone and it honestly doesn't ruin the whole show for me.

Gurren Lagann as a whole definitely lives up to the hype. Plenty of high octaned action, stellar visuals, brilliant cast of characters and once again has more than proven itself to be one of my favourites in general. Since it's been amazing all the way through, I give Gurren Lagann a 10/10.

I never thought I would have so much fun re-watching this show years later. But I didn't remember the ending being so bittersweet. Didn't they try to somehow adjust or correct this through some additional material?

Wow this was incredible! I felt kinda sad for Nia and Simon. But at the same time it wasn't too bad. Concidering they both accepted her fate. Lord Genemone once again showed us how a bad-ass goes out. I swear this show has the best deaths EVER!

I really liked the part after the credits. Seeing how everyone ended up^^ An incredible ending to an incredible show. (Simon should have banged Yoko though>.> but that would probably kill him)

THANK YOU GURREN LAGANN! And THANK YOU GAINAX For NOT messing the ending up xD
@mulderman yes i think so too
