The plot is slow, the pacing is stretched out in a way to end most episodes on a cliff hanger, and there are numerous side plots that don't even add to the main story much.
The latter is actually a good thing, because those are way better than the core story, which is quite frankly very poorly resolved, and the 3 main characters are by far in the show.
Also you hardly ever see the main villain, so the protagonist is basically fighting against the omnipotent author, people said he is among the best characters ever, while getting 0 screen time, people only just tell how scary he is, it's really ridiculous.

I completely agree. I'm in shock with the amount of people that consider this garbage as a masterpiece, not only has like 300 plots that doesn't serve the story, the villain is a lame caricature of itself. It's a complete waste of time

@Rodoju If they cut out the main story, the side plots would actually be pretty entertaining, albeit incoherent.
It's kind of wild how the same author wrote both in the same manga...

It is a bit slow, and tbh it would be better if there were like 60-65 episodes instead of 74. But overall, a very good anime, with excellent ending!

I am on episode 5 of Monster. In my view plot is going pretty slowly. As for now I have no clue how the story can go for around 70 eps. I heard a lot people saying it's masterpiece, but for me it's boring. Will something actually interesting happen and if so around which ep? I am considering dropping it.

It's very much a slow burn, with more of an emphasis on building mystery & suspense than action. I thought the show improved noticeably when Wolfgang Grimmer was on screen, he appears slightly after the halfway point of the show if I remember correctly. Every mini-arc ends in a dramatic event every 10 or so episodes. While others in the comment section will probably disagree with me, I personally thought the ending was a bit of a letdown but that's just me.

If, however, Deyhtyi you find the show to be boring, there's no harm in dropping it. I've learned not to rely too heavily on others' opinions for my own viewing enjoyment, and no matter how many people call Monster a masterpiece, if you're not appreciating the anime than it's simply not for you. At the end of the day, you're the only one having your individual viewing experience and can judge what you find boring/engaging.

It's a good show, just keep watching.

If it feels too slow for you, consider reading the manga instead.

Monster is outstanding!
I read the manga then watched the anime.
it's one of the few shows where the anime really is a worthy adaptation of the source material. it's basically a 1:1 transfer.
it's one of the best stories I ever read. 6 my #1 manga and anime. Naoki Urasawa is a genius mastermind.
Pluto and 20th Century Boys are also top notch!

Urasawa generally likes to draw deep characters that you really really love or hate with all your heart. that said, Johann is one of the best villains of all times.
if you are able to enjoy more of a deep story with complex characters, then you'll have fun. if you are just able to enjoy standard junk entertainment, like the majority is served nowadays, then it's not for you.

@hangmansjoke

Tries to look smart while having Lucy as his favorite character...

You have a long path to go if you want to be the true elitist as you imply from your post

Name is Johan, not Johann btw.

Honestly, you're probably better off dropping it if you're not into it at this point. Pay no mind to the pretentious, snobby elitists in this forum trying to make you feel inferior for not liking it.

Speaking from my own experience: I went into it knowing full well that it was gonna be a slow burn type of show, and it really did manage to grab me and keep my attention for like the first 20-ish Episodes... but then at some point it feels like the story isn't purposefully going anywhere and is just wandering around in circles; like the author is making things up as he goes along until he can figure where to make the characters go next. It became boring and repetitive to me, and at this point I've lost almost all interest in this show.

I kid you not, i started watching this show almost 2 years ago... and I still haven't finished it (I'm at Ep. 58) because i almost never feel a desire to watch a new episode, so i usually opt to watch other things instead, and that disinterest results in me taking weeks or even months-long breaks in between episodes. The only reason I haven't dropped it myself is 'cause I'm a bit of a completionist and I hope to eventually reach the end, even though that may take me many more months.

But yeah, there's no real point where this show "gets better". For good or bad, it stays at about the same level of quality the whole way through, so you either vibe with it from the start or you don't.
