If you follow the manga author's twitter, she already stopped updating the manga since March.
Apparently, the publisher went ahead to create the anime adaptation without discussing with the mangaka.

Since that's been done, the mangaka tried to participate in the anime to supervise, but it's still difficult to be in sync with the anime production team. Even for the VAs, she only got to participate with the voice actor choice of the male lead, but the other characters voice actors are already set without informing her nor discussion with her.

In any case due to this, the mangaka decided to stop updating the manga and removed 'publishing on publisher name' from her twitter's page bio and did not retweet anything related to the anime since as a form of protest...

This kind of situation seems to happen again and again within the manga-anime industry. It's sad honestly.

Fans of manga should just stick with the manga.

Since the mangaka didn't say she took the hiatus for health reasons (which would include a possible pregnancy as well) I thought the most likely reason she took the hiatus was to supervise the anime in order to look at least decent since Studio DEEN is infamous for quite low quality looking animation ( Seven Deadly Sins later season, fate stay night (2006) etc.)

What’s your source for the anime being made without approval?

Bummer. I’ve wanted to read the manga for a while, so jumped on the anime. It’s fun, but not stellar. The production could have been way higher to make it look better. It’s kind of a slide show at points. But the story is super compelling.

This is still minor compared to the situation around the first Fruit Basket anime, when the author literally waged a holy war with the director. And it only got worse when the last one was canceled due to allegations of sexual harassment against one of the VAs.

@Purple_Element Sure they can if the author sold off the rights to the publisher and the publisher contracted with the studio. Happens in the movie industry all the time for decades.

@samspot8r8s

from X. And assumptions from people following the mangaka.

There are always people coming up with wild ideas about what happens with both mangaka and anime staff, and 8 times out of 10, they're wrong or just spreading lies for social media engagement.

Recently unfollowed a couple of accounts on X (not Japanese accounts as they're usually more careful due to Japan's strict libel laws) as got sick of the lies they were spewing about anime studios just to make themselves look important and get more followers.

In essence, it could be true, it likely isn't. But I always think a good rule of thumb is to not believe anything until it comes straight from the mouth of the mangaka or the anime staff themselves.

Even so, the mangaka should not be too upset with the anime adaptation. It's pretty loyal to the manga, and they've done a great job with the art style, the scripts and the voice actors, IMO.

@joemaamah

This. People should educate themselves more on selling off rights to the publishers. Often the authors don't have control of how an adaptation will turn out, only in very rare occasions.

Basically source is "trust me bro". You shouldn't spread baseless speculations as if they are confirmed. Many people don't know any better and will take whatever they read at face value.

Like this one.

Change the title and add "speculation/rumours" for clarification. Unless you can provide official statement from mangaka/authorites regarding this.

When I saw the title of this thread it made me remember immediately the Fruits Basket problem.

But from the anime discussions I have heard this too, so the Mangaka probably wouldn't be that upset, comparing to what they did to Fruits Basket for example, where they really took out a lot from the original story and were just not loyal in regards to some characters and scenes.

But I don't know what to think with this information, since some of you are also saying it might not be true.

The manga isn't cancelled by the publishers, they want more chapters, they want the story to go on but it's the mangaka that went on hiatus.

@-Hotaru_ Look at all the Marvel and Star Wars bullshit that has come out in the last 20 years. Disney is a huge offender in this regard. Japanese studios just copying damned Yankees' business practices..

The author has gone on much smaller breaks before.
It could just be a placeholder date, but as of right now volume 9 is set to come out in japan in February. There are still some chapters needed to be released to put out a full volume, so there’s a chance the manga will re-start around the end of the anime if there’s pressure to meet the February deadline.

A Taiwanese Youtuber summarized this issue - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uxXpbw67tg&t=325s&ab_channel=%E6%85%A2%E6%85%A2%E6%85%A2%E8%80%81%E6%96%AF - This is where I got to know.
Also sources are from X and mangaka's past post..

A dcard thread (in chinese) that translate and summarize the whole situation - https://www.dcard.tw/f/acg/p/256986013 (Can use google translate)
Indeed, there's some suspicion that the X source not saying the truth because there's no direct mentions from the mangaka herself but another X source instead.

But its strange that the mangaka didn't retweet ANY single promotional tweet for the anime and removed kondansha from her twitter bio. Mangaka also mentioned in her own twitter that her hiatus is not due to bad health or anything but due to various circumstances and don't know when will it be resume. Which matches the whole situation. Most netizens speculate is because mangaka doesn't want to "totally break" the relationship with the publisher so she's keeping quiet and cold attitude towards this whole situation.

Doesn't seem like this was discussed in English sites, but it was already being discussed in Japan since June - https://nijigenoshimatome.com/archives/3326403.html and many thinks this case might be similar to Tanaka (another incident whereby mangaka has no say in the adaptation but that led to bigger tragedy)

To support the anime or not, it's totally up to you. But I'm gonna pass this anime and stick to the manga.

After watching the first 3 episodes, the rumour doesn't seem too far fatched. It isn't an easy manga to adapt, it needs fine tuning so that it doesn't end up being a joke. For the time being, it just looks bland af.
