Emilia fits the damsel in distress cliche perfectly and is really the only role she plays. She pretty much spends most of the season crying and getting saved by Subaru. She was a more interesting character before she got close to Subaru.
People with low average anime scores don't have high standards. They are just bad at choosing good anime to watch.

the author wrote re:zero specifically cause he wanted to write about a white haired elf being saved(aka Emilia) so i guess its his vision, so far it has been the same saving her. i mean there are moments she shines but majority of the show has just been about saving her, i personally dont really care but i knew people would probably be a bit more critic about that plot point. i like the character development of season 2 so i say she is a more interesting character now, just that she really doesn't do much for majority of the show.

Subaru's the biggest damsel in distress. This is my honest opinion considering the entire season 1 and 2. Emilia can be second.

It's intended to be that, tho.
It's not a accidential flaw. She's purposely written like that.

So I think it's a little unfair to expect something different, while disregarding what the Story is going for as simply "too much"

In some cases it is useful in the narrative. But what irritates me about this character is the fact that she is extremely dull and has no personality whatsoever.

Feminists will be angry. To me it's a fine way to build a story.

I mean remember the good old days when all games used to be about saving your girlfriend. People weren't complaining

I actually agree with you there.

I don’t agree with your thoughts about Emilia at all. As the others have said, yes Re:Zero was written for Emilia, but not “to save her”. In season 2 she’s trying to face the trial of the sanctuary but the issue is that the contract she has with Puck has sealed her memories. Therefore, she can’t face the trial properly. Thus, causing her to take a large mental burden that she doesn’t understand. I don’t know exactly where you are at in season 2 but until she can recover her memories she won’t be able to face the trial.

Certainly sometimes she plays the roll of damsel in distress but I really don't think it's the awful trope so many people have made it out to be in recent years. People are also forgetting that her entire character introduction was literally her saving Subaru from getting his shit kicked in. Not that that one scene is indicative of her entire character but it's gotta be worth something.

@DragyG
I don't think I've had much experience with those games (besides Mario games or Jump King), but Bleach is an example I can think of that uses the damsel in distress in anime (with Rukia and Orihime being the damsels in the 2 main arcs). The reason it was effective for me is that the damsel isn't given that much screentime so I don't mind if they're duller characters in those arcs. Emilia has a decent share of the screentime over the whole story which is what I personally find kinda annoying.

Go watch season 3 and your opinion will change.

not really. she is struggling mentally under the enormous pressure that lies upon her shoulders, but dansel in distress? The show makes it very clear how much more powerful she is than subaru, the whole point of the show is tho that subaru would rather die thirty times than emilia getting a single scratch.
