@basspig you don't understand the intent? Somehow I don't doubt that
@saikyozero what comes across to me is that you are looking to pick an argument.

Having rated Hyouka a 10/10 years ago, I had high hopes for this series. Sadly it was not even remotely similar beyond school setting. The relationship between He and She was about as solid as two junkies trying to rehab themselves straight. She is whisper quiet and mostly forgetful (minus the 5K calorie a day diet) and He is her bodyguard/enabler. The mysteries throughout the series are like the free puzzles that sit on restaurant table tops to keep you busy while waiting for food. Somewhat interesting but you really don't care if they get solved or not.

But the Finale was great! I felt so good when they split up and found other people to try and be normal with. He can quit bodyguarding her and enabling her backstabbing ways. She can just go eat more calories with a new patsy. Perfect! At least I am off the series train. 6/10 and I loved the OST.

The duo "breaking it off " made me want to punch my screen so bad yet i felt like it was always foreshadowed
in the ending song these to never appear together i found it rather odd at first but it all made sense.

I wonder if this split will be permanent, I really did enjoy them interacting together so I guess I'll have to wait for season 2 to find out

the new characters look cool though

...... boring shit. 3/10
Agree 😴 Just watch to finish this at this point.. 5/10 why they didn't show the important scenes like the fighting & the kidnapping? she treated him like desert deliveryman 😒

Okay, the former heroine is insane.
RIP old ships.
Hello to new ships.

Definitely prefer Hyouka than this... ugh.

Now that I think this through, the parallel portrayals were annoying. It ruins the story, and the flow.

It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

9 Episodes of friendship, or so I thought, ended just like that.

Had me look up the manga because man that ending felt ... quite frankly awful.

Yeah, they were oddballs in their own right but both sounded like straight up psychos in this episode.
Guess the Wolf and Fox imagery tried to show us that they were predators and not just some odd kids (?).

The sudden "love-interests" out of nowhere were weird.
At least I didnt see them before and felt like just planted in there to have drama for the next season.

I enjoyed this series and their chemistry, but that ending left me with more questions than answers.

Wow, I didn't expect such a finale. Pacing is not working very well here.

I wonder what kind of story it will be in the 2nd season. Especially this truck in fire in the end is concerning.

Just after I've watched the last episde I saw that the author of the source story is Yonezava Honbu who also wrote "Hyouka". I really like "Hyouka" so now I'm curious how the story will go in the future.

Also Jougorou is similar to Houtaru - calm, most of the time silent thinker.

Yuki is manipulative but is she a bad person? I cannot decide in this moment. Many victims of violence and sexual abuse become manipulative. We don't know what happend to her in her previous school. It may be defense mechanism. On the other hand, she doesn't tell Jougorou what happend to her, she is not honest with him. We don't know why. That's not fair, so maybe she is true villainess. And about what she asked Kengo? Only about hiding her identity?

A 10 episode anime that took 8 episodes for a setup with a meh payoff at best. Can't even say the anime was bad, in fact it committed a far worse sin than being bad, it was simply boring. The last two episodes tried to have some actual plot-twist, but it was too little to late. Maybe if it was longer, instead of being split in to two seasons, it could pull it off, but quite frankly, as it is, it fall flat on its face.

Osani is cold as fuck, didn't see that coming. I agree that they had a codependent relationship that wasn't going anywhere, so might as well break up. However, I see Osani as a very manipulative person so that guy from the journalism club asking her to be his girlfriend is asking for serious trouble. Jogoro being with a normal girl will be good for him.

Even though it makes sense that Osanai wanted to keep their relationship for the sake of getting that girl in jail, it was such a lame conclusion to the overarching struggle of becoming ordinary. Especially on Kabato's side because he was unaware yet still continued this relationship. There was no gradual realization that they can't escape being their unordinary selves, just a sudden revelation at the very end.

I was also expecting Kobato to try to convince Osanai of maintaining their relationship when he first says that their relationship wasn't meaningless even if the original 'contract' was no longer effective. But Osanai just said "Nope" and he went along with it.

I do think that season 2 will be more interesting because now they're forced to be normal. But if they start throwing the main characters back into the detective drama from episode 1 instead of easing into it, it will be a drop from me.
@Quadruple_Oi I like that Kobato didn't start groveling/begging Osanai to keep the relationship going. He has his pride and won't give her that 'win'.

Interesting that it was previously hinted at that Osanai has a violent past in middle school and turns out to be a sociopath in the end.

- "You can't treat crime like snacks..." I find it interesting that Kobato believes it's wrong to bring a known criminal to justice because of a lie. Whereas Osanai seems to think that the ends justify the means.

- Sure, Kobato may have lied about wanting to become ordinary. But staging a kidnapping that would get the supposed kidnapper arrested is not on the same level.

- Out of context, the part about terminating their relationship does give off the vibes of a romantic breakup.

- Who the heck is this red head girl? Who does she think she is that she can call Kobato as "Joe"? Glorified extra merely crushing on Kobato? Or new main character?

- So Kengo's associate from the newspaper club is crushing on Osanai. I wonder what kind of trouble will he get into this time.

- Speaking of trouble... what's with that final scene of the white van catching on fire? Did Osanai leave a parting gift?

Overall series impression:

I'm rather mixed with this series.

On the one hand, it at least tries to make an effort in its visual presentation. One can say that it's "cinematic flair" is arguably more blatant when compared to Hyouka's presentation.

On the other, the mysteries are of a mixed bag. I guess I had been spoiled by The Apothecary Diaries approach to small mysteries: if it's a just a minor thing, Maomao will solve it in 5 minutes tops and move on. Whereas in Shoshimin, it indulges half an episode pondering how Kengo made hot coco. I'm just glad that the series got more interesting than what was presented in Episode 2 with the bike theft and kidnapping incidents.

There are only 3 characters worthwhile talking about. Kengo is the straight everyman. Kobato is the wannabe detective, who can also be a capable prosecutor as one of his future career prospects. But it was Osanai who I found the most intriguing. Initially, I feared she was just a subdued Eru Chitanda with a sweetooth. But her darker side really caught me off guard, and is to me a main highlight of the show. On that note, I wish that there was more for Kobato. His quest to be "ordinary" feels trivial when compared to Osanai's deeper issues. An nosy know-it-all vs. a Machiavellian wolf in sheep's clothing. Which between these two urgently needs to be ordinary again?

I felt that two background characters suddenly crushing on our two main leads was so tacked on. I say this is the case because of the sudden rise in prominence of two extras who we did not see having any interest with Kobato and Osanai before Episode 10. The show was too heavily focused on Kobato and Osanai that barely allowed anyone who wasn't Kengo any meaningful screentime for adequate character development.

Despite my qualms about Shoshimin, I will watch Season 2. If only to see what Osanai is scheming behind Kobato's back.

TL;DR - If you ask me, Shoshimin S1 doesn't reach the heights of Hyouka. If you hated Hyouka, I do not recommend Shoshimin. If you're a Hyouka fan, do I recommend this show? Honestly, it depends on what you enjoyed about Hyouka. If it was the mundane mysteries, Shoshimin is definitely worth checking out. But if it was the Classic Literature Club and the chemistry of the main characters, please adjust your expectations accordingly.
@Alpha-Nine Hyouka is the original of this type of anime and very innocent. Shoshimin is its darker, more malevolent sibling. We didn't need a Hyouke-redux, I'm glad we got something different.

@mal_user_2022 I wasn't saying that Shoshimin should have been a "Hyouka redux" as you say. I'm glad it is not. I was merely expressing an opinionated disclaimer for all those folks who are going to watch Shoshimin with the expectation that it is Hyouka S2 in all but name.

@Alpha-Nine I've seen this attitude over and over in anime fandom. Shitting all over a 'successor' show that was 'too different' from the original. It's like in life, do people just want everything to be the same every day until they die?

I don't know if I'll be fully invested in season 2. I'll just constantly be thinking about what could've been, when I see the two do separate things.

6/10 for me. surprised it was made by the same author as hyouka bcos this one is so ass tho. the characters felt so flat liek do they even have a personality and sometimes it feels so inconsistent coming from them. also the side characters prolly feels the worse among them. like they all arent normal not just the two main characters but all of em. and wtf is up with the ending?

Honestly, shouldve adapted more hyouka instead of whatever is this supposed to be

I'm not going to mention on much other than the fact that they quote on quote broke up which doesn't make any sense to me because they were not dating in the first place. And was there friendship never a friendship? I thought they were close friends that enjoyed spending time with each other but was it always just for that pact?

Another thing what the fuck does this character that has no screen time mean "Wanna go out with me" What the hell bro out of nowhere no plot buildup or nothing i need this second season to Air NOW.

And then Osanai is also getting close with some other dude this is a cliffhanger if i have ever seen one. Also what does that burning car imply I'm confused.

The conversation between Osanai and Kobato ended with their contract being terminated, and now they’ve gone their separate ways. To be honest, that made me sad—they were like two peas in a pod.

The way they both ended up with people who like them… maybe I don’t mind that either. If they do start something with them, they might actually learn how to be ordinary from the ordinary. But that ending though? The vehicle Osanai was kidnapped in, suddenly on fire—was that just for show, or is it hinting at something in a second season? I’m seriously curious.
