I'm aware of the fact that there are still three episodes left to wrap up this season, but I believe what we've seen thus far is enough to give a fair verdict. Notwithstanding, you can still change your choice should you feel the need to once the ongoing season comes to a conclusion. Personally, I liked the first season more (9/10). This season is also quite phenomenal (9/10), but just a touch under its prequel, in my honest opinion.\

EDIT: After watching Episode 11, I can hereby safely state that I'm now enjoying this season (slightly) more than I enjoyed the first season.

I had already preferred this arc over what came before it when I was reading the manga, and that hasn’t changed with the adaptation. If anything, the phenomenal job the animators did with presenting the arc only further solidified this for me.

I prefer season 1 because it was more idol/musical like than season 2. Ofc I also like this current season, but the moment of the video I've attached was peak of the peak.

I prefer the first season because I think it delivered on really impactful moments in all of the gigs that Aqua was a part of, and they did a great job with B Komachi's revival.

This season has had certain moments that surpass the previous season such as the conflict with Abiko-sensei and her quarrel with Sweet Today's author (might've gotten the name wrong, sry), Melt's character growth which was very well built-up from the first episode, and Aqua's trauma and how he used it to his advantage by channeling the emotion instead of resisting it. But this season also had lows that I don't remember from the previous season mostly involving the presentation of the Tokyo Blade play and how lackluster the drama between Kana and Akane was.

I like the second season more because I’m more interested in acting. The first season was also good, but i didn’t really find it anything great. The second season had some cool moments with some good character conflicts and psychological themes, which is weird for me to say because I usually like more wholesome or lighthearted things and end up not enjoying some dark series like lain.

I missed two weeks I think so I can't really say my thoughts on it but this season figured so many things about characters I donc care about so I didn't care about a lot of that second season.

I would give you a more reflected opinion when the season ends.

I prefer season 2, although slightly; when the Private Arc is finished, the gap will widen.

This season was consistently good, and even more unique than season 1; all the Tokyo Blade episodes are 9.5, and even the episodes before that with Abiko and during preparation for the stage-play were enjoyable and great.

I think when people look at season 1, they only look at the peaks of it, such as episode 1 and maybe also 6 and 11, I agree that episodes 1 and 6 are the peak of Oshi no Ko (only of the anime; manga has greater moments.), but season 1 was not as consistently good as season 2.

@Cielord Valid point. It's also fair to say that Season 2 started off slow, but picked up the pace after its 4th episode. I wouldn't therefore say that it was consistent. That being said, The Tokyo Blade Arc was the highlight of this season, a solid 9.2/10 from me. It was during this arc to the end of the season that this season really shone consistently.

I can't say anything about onk 2. 😶

I'm very far from Idols and especially asian elitism. I don't particularly like settings about students from elite schools and all sorts of rich guys.
they are mostly too predictable for me and partly perverted and false...

I found more interest for myself this summer and became involved in ongoings: "make heroine ga oosugiru!", "ookami to koushinryou: merchant meets the wise wolf", "senpai wa otokonoko" and "shikanoko nokonoko koshitantan".🥰

that discussions on these titles are not very lively and interesting for discussion, so I'm here😘🙏

@aurora_yuuki I agree with you that season 2 started slow, but as I said before, I still believe it's more consistent than the previous season.

Regarding the start of the season, even if someone didn't enjoy it, they can surely acknowledge that it was necessary and enhanced the Tokyo Blade stage play: Would Melt's episode be as impressive as it was without them? Who showed his hard work, and Yoriko distrust/dislike of him. Would Aqua's emotional acting hit as hard as it did without the previous delving into his psychological state? Etc.

With that build-up and my enjoyment of it, those episodes aren't a negative, but just another aspect of why I love this season.

Oshi no Ko peaked at episode one and I don't think it is a controversial statement.
@Piromysl It’s not a controversial statement and yet I disagree. And my opinion is unpopular probably...

To me it’s a length bias. A show will always SEEMS better when you get the full story compared to part of a story. When you get the introduction to the conclusion, when you have the answers the question that were just asked, when the payoff comes with the setup, etc.

Episode 1 is an introduction arc all by itself, almost a prequel. It’s an entire story that is self-contained, plot lines get resolved setups get their payoffs. Just a little open end, because if not there would be no episode 2 and series. The father’s identity is literally the only question without answer. And THEN episode 2 starts introducing plot lines that will take time to resolve, like Ruby becoming an idol. It’s a full manga volume that could very well have been 4 episodes instead of 1, it just happens to be 1 episode.

For the same reasons "setup" episodes are seems as slow or less interesting as "payoff" episodes, but without setups you would never get any payoff. You’re just biased because the setup and the payoffs happen in different episodes. You shouldn’t judge an episode for being a setup episode, but judge it as a good or a bad setup. Like no, the beginning of the tokyo blade arc is not "slow", it is NECESSARY to setup everything. How would Aqua’s emotional acting have any impact without Aqua having a panic attack at the start of the arc. And why would he have a panic attack? We need to setup all that shit before the big payoff. 90% of story writing is setup/payoff, once you realize this you stop seeing episodes of a show as "slow" and "peak" and you start thinking like "oooh, that’s the direction they were going" and starts seeing hints in setup episodes you might even do full predictions of what is to come, like happy episode = something bad will happen soon. (unless it’s actually just fillers, it does happen sometimes)

So what you can say is that the episode 1 is like a movie (and it’s true, it’s very much constructed like a movie) while the rest of the series... Is a series. And having plot lines that won’t get resolved before a few seasons and setups that won’t get any payoff is a characteristic of a series. It’s not a bad thing, that’s just how series are compared to movies.

To me comparing episode 1 to the series is unfair, it’s like a prequel movie. It should be compared to something that has a conclusion, so like you shouldn’t compare episode 1 to episode 2, but episode 1 to episodes from 2 to last manga chapter. Or at the very least episode 1 to an entire arc. Because then you compare a full story arc to a full story arc.

My favorite arc so far in the anime, is Tokyo blade, but I like the following arcs even more (private and what comes after in the manga). In a way, episode 1 is regarded as the best episode because of the big payoff, Ai’s death after setting her up as the most incredible and likeable character, killing her sure has a big impact. But in a way... Episode 1 is the biggest setup of this series. Just how many time have we had Ai death flashbacks so far? In the tokyo blade arc it’s almost all episodes, sometimes multiple times in the same episode. Just how much her death is just shaping the entire series, characters choices and motivations, etc.? That’s a big impactful setup and now everything we get out of it in each arcs is just payoff after payoff. And it makes this series so good. Aqua’s flashback of Ai’s death just before his emotional acting is BETTER than the original Ai death scene and I am not afraid to say it. Don’t get me wrong episode 1 is GREAT, it’s a very good setup. But I don’t think people realize just how much we get from episode 1.... outside of episode 1. What I mean is yes, Ai’s death is very impactful, but we don’t just get Ai’s death in just episode 1, we get it reminded in many episodes and sometimes it’s even more impactful then than in the actual first episode.

So yeah. Season 2 is better IMO. It couldn’t exist without season 1 of course, it’s not like you can skip episodes or anything, but we are getting into the good part of the series.

I personally don’t know how you could prefer Season 1. I thought the Tokyo Blade arc was considered to be on of the best arcs. If you didn’t like the Tokyo Blade arc then I almost feel like you’d be better off dropping the anime. Also people saying only episode 1 was good are crazy. The first half of the initial episode wasn’t even that good. Seriously, the first ~30-40 minutes of episode 1 is probably my least favorite part of Oshi no Ko. You can tell how much more effort was put into season 2 as well. The animators really popped off. Plus they added some stuff that only made the arc better. They couldn’t have adapted it better honestly. The first season didn’t even really feel like an arc. It was just an introduction meant to show you what kind of show this was. It was honestly more chill and lighthearted (aside from Akane’s episode of course). We get so much more with the Tokyo Blade arc. Aqua’s PTSD, Melts growth arc, A look into disputes between the original creators and adaptation creator, half-sibling reveal, different acting methods, happy Aqua, Akane finds out Ai is Aqua and Ruby’s mother, Akane vs Kana, crow girl etc. (Warning: Spoilers for rest of season) By the end of the season I believe we’re getting the first glimpse of Hikaru, Ruby finding Gorou’s corpse, and the start of dark eyed Ruby. I think we also get a genuine Aqua and Akane kiss if I’m not wrong about the placement. So yeah season 2 definitely wins for sure. Anyone that doesn’t find all of that interesting should definitely drop the anime.

@Mae_11 I'd already stated that Tokyo Blade Arc was the highlight of this season, before you get your pitchfork out. I ought to have mentioned that this season started slow, but it served to necessitate the growth of the characters and the buildup of the plotline. However, the anime certainly has stayed consistent over the course of its runtime, despite the slow start - so that in itself, yields some points in favor of S2.

I'm not trying to downplay or underappreciate either of the seasons. Both were meticulously made and directed with love and care. I simply found myself enjoying the introductory season a tad bit more.

Oshi No Ko is my favourite anime so I like both of them equally. But if I have to choose Tokyo Blade arc is the best part of Anime so far.

S1 has some superb moments (not mentioning ep1) Aqua-Kana saving that drama, Aqua recruitment process, Akane's struggle THAT FREAKING AI TRANSFORMATION SCENE, Aqua as Paimon and atlast the B Komachi debut. It sets up things and then gives you payoff after. And the tone lot light hearted (excluding some parts).

Tokyo Blade arc took time to setup. Even then Abiko-Yoriko spat and Aqua's breakdown (sadly) were brilliant.
But after it started ep 6-9 was absolutely Goated. Melt's revival, Akane v Kana, Aqua bringing out Kana from darkness and finally Aqua unlocking emotional acting peak after peak.

And it all ended with the Aqua imagining that dream were Ai didn't die..
That was the best moment of the series for me (replacing Akane to Ai one).

By the looks of last episode and some little spoilers I got (some by scrolling fourms, people can't use spoiler button to save their life) next Ruby arc will be good too. So yeah so far S2>S1

S1 has settled up plot points and S2 are using to elevate the standards.

But overall season 2 has been more interesting for me surprisingly

Season two and that’s without a doubt.
Sure season one had the crazy first episode, but overall I’ve liked the current season much more. So much character development for lot of the crew and I loved the whole theatre arc!

Season two, easily. The Tokyo Blade arc is my favorite arc out of all OnK arcs even in the manga. I doubt any future seasons will be able to surpass this one, but maybe Doga Kobo will be able to work their magic.

@habib_kun @DragyG Episode 11 is a must-watch.

I will wait to vote until Season 2 is done, but right now I will say the following:

Season 1 has higher highs (the highs of Episode 1 and especially Episode 6 are not hit by Season 2, though it approaches highs of its own multiple times);

That said, season 2 is generally a far more consistent season, with fewer "filler" feeling episodes;

Even the episodes that would have felt like filler in season 1 feel less so in season 2 thanks to the characters being more established and their interactions being more interesting due to being rooted in their characterizations over multiple episodes so far; which can elevate the episodes in a way that season 1 did not have the benefit of.

The animation quality is undoubtedly superior in Season 2 by far.

This relates to an earlier point, but there are more characters that feel a lot more interesting in Season 2, compared to the first one where the bulk of the season the only really interesting character is Aqua (with Kana, Ruby, and Akane carrying the secondary character duties). In Season 2, Aqua continues to be interesting, Kana and especially Akane get a LOT more fleshed out (and get a lot more interesting, especially Akane who is basically a psychopath), secondary characters like Himekawa, the director of the play, the mangaka, Melt, all feel a lot more interesting to follow);

The first season has a better opening (though the second season's opening is excellent)

The second season has a better ending (though the first season's ending is excellent)

--

I think in all I definitely seem to lean more towards the second season, but the highs of the first season are amazing and hit in a way that most media usually does not for me, let alone anime. Those highs really boost the overall standing of that first season for me. I think my mind says the second season, but my heart, while not against that, isn't willing to agree to it without a fight, lol.

We'll see if the final two episodes of season 2 make this easier for me.

season 2 is more interesting, feels more like the point of the series is coming across. the first season was more idol centered and not really about finding their dad in the same way

Yeah, S2 is definitely better. Now I feel like a fool for making this thread.
