My opinion on Kim completely changed. When I first saw him I disliked him for having such a cold boxing style, ruthless and harsh. But his backstory turned out to be dramatic and traumatic. Joe knows this is gonna be a painfully hard match for him. Let aside Joe's disadvantage of his physic, but his moral isn't at its best too.

I was glad Joe finally ate something... even if he didn't even finish that meal.

I was expecting Kim to be something like that, but didn't expect the story to go into so much detail with him. Great to have this episode just before the fight.

Happy to see Joe finally got something to eat... god knows how long has he been suffering but Joe really should have finished the food lol.

I liked Kim's backstory, adds more depth into his character.

Kim's backstory almost made me shed tears, it was so tragic. Kim is much more than a boxing computer now.

I can't wait for the fight.

I think they did a great job writing Kim's character and this backstory certainly helped. Looking forward to the fight for sure.

Heck, Kim's backstory was really depressing and helped a lot with his characterization. It had to be that way to explain his character.

Poor Kim, he killed his own father who was trying to get that food to him and his mother.
It was weird that he went and told Joe all that, and why are they talking that easy, he is from Korea and Joe from Japan, they don't speak the same language.

Kim's backstory added so much depth to him as a character and is just gonna make this upcoming fight all the more epic. Joe didn't even eat half his food probably because of what Kim told him. Shocking to see the confident Joe actually say at the end of the episode that he doesn't believe he can win the fight.

Felt really good to see how happy Joe was when Danpei told him that he can finally eat something, it was a long time since this side of him was shown.

And I expected Kim to have a tragic past, but that was cruel. His character became much more interesting and he's also one hell of a beast, even Joe lost his confidence.

Damn that was so tragic killing your own father who hold that food so dear to him for the sake of his family.

Holy crap, that was one dark and cruel background. I knew he had a dark background related to the war, but didn't expect it to be this bad.
And this was probably the first time Joe is not confident he will win a match. I can't really tell how the match will turn out, I can't even tell if it will be a close match or if Joe will get his ass kicked this time.

Damn just when I thought this episode was gonna bring us back to a more lighthearted tone it goes and becomes the darkest episode of this entire series so far by a longshot, but also one of the best and most memorable ones as well.

This definitely pushes the second series out of the shadow of the first.

Kim is a special opponent. he's not like any other boxer we've seen in the series until this point. i liked him since the beginning, but now i think he may become one of my favorite characters in the series.

This is the first time Joe has ever feared an opponent and doubted himself. it's the first time he realized that boxing is nothing more than a "game". no matter how violent and wild it is, it's nothing compared to real, raw battles. this is the first time we've ever seen a boxer who's more than just a "boxer".

Holy Shit, Kim backstory was so depressing but whats more how it was delivered. People say crap in the internet saying Ashita no Joe needs a remake however if u show them this episode literally no, the color palette of war, the brilliant isolated directing, storyboarding, some of the best animations .....

Literally, this is anime gold on how it was delivered.

They is no sugar coating its just raw no moral message just a sad reality that can occur in war

Whelp, I knew something was up when Kim was washing his hands at night; but it was nowhere as traumatic as I'd thought it be.

Because Korean people could speak Japanese at that time.
They were taught Japanese during the WW2.

War is in every way an extremely frightening and traumatizing thing, some people end up getting shaped by it, like Kim. I didn't expect Kim to directly tell Joe his backstory. I think I will remember it for a long time, Kim's backstory, it was very depressive and unfortunate. Joe ended up not finishing his meal, not surprising after what he listened to. What's even more of a surprise, Joe admit to himself that he's not sure whether he'll win this fight...

War is horrible. In Kim's case having seen his mother die before his eyes and killing his father with his own hands must have been unspeakable.

Even Joe is not sure he can win

You think oh Rikiishi is special then it's like yeah Carlos is another special character too. But man Kim's backstory was depicted so brilliantly I like him as much as I like Joe. The realism in this show is beautiful and amazing.

This episode is brilliant, one of the best episodes I have ever seen in any anime. I couldn't help but think that Kim was trying to manipulate Joe into not eating that food though, in Joe's state every bite counts, so I hope this isn't detrimental to his fight.

While nothing major occurred in this episode, we get to see Kim tragic backstory.

Joe look absolutely exhausted after that weight lost training.

Damn it was nice seeing Joe's eyes glow up after Tanpei offered him to eat some food ...
But damn what a tragic history Kim has, no wonder Danpei couldn't see anything behind Kim's eyes, the man is barely alive.

It's insane that even with Rikishi fully out of the show, it's still able to build hype for even the most minor seeming opponents.

Conveniently shows up at the exact restaurant where Joe is at the exact same time he is there to randomly start trauma dumping about how the guy whose skull he crushed (with the strength of an emaciated 5 year old btw) just happened to be his father for maximum dramatic effect. Okay.

@Ulquiorra well kim is much older and much more experienced than joe, he probably learn japanese beforehand
