I will spread this, that's one of the best 1st episode this season (standing beside Oshi no Ko), I will even rate the flagship romcom anime this season (German girl Alya) below this

incredible first episode, this and elusive samurai is one of the best first episodes of the season.

this fight scene was insane the animation was so beautiful and every motion of the fight was so fluid the studio working on this doesn't need to be this hard for a pilot episode.

really like seeing Elfaria's design, she is very beautiful, and the other characters are also very interesting, looking forward to next week's episode.

not going to lie, I started watching this and was reminded of DanMachi immediately. I even thought that the VA for the MC sounded like Bell. Then whoa, I'm reading up on this anime on the internet and find out that the writer for DanMachi also wrote this-?!

it was not the biggest big-brain moment of mine, but I'm willing to give this series a chance while I take a break from Black Clover.

Went in with 0 expectations, never heard of the manga or the studio behind it and I was pretty blown away by the incredible animation. It was consistent throughout the whole episode too which is amazing, if they keep this up for the whole series I would be really surprised.

The story reminds me of Mashle. It also has that trope of characters who are comically evil/mean to the MC so I hope that goes away soon.

Yoshihara is SO back dude. Feels like I'm watching Chainsaw Man again -- I couldn't stop pausing and rewinding to take screenshots and fawn over the animation lmfao.

All that being said, I found several of the characters quite charming already. That + the arresting direction + the stellar action towards the end = premiere of the season!

My expectations were unrealistic and somehow they were completely exceeded. Sasuga Yoshihara, you cooked.

What do you mean? Yoshihara directed Chainsaw Man?

@Dan_ALves He was the action director for Chainsaw Man - also directed several episodes and animated quite a few scenes himself

Beautifully animated, to the point that the CGI actually elevated the animation.

Fight choreography was fantastic and smooth.

Story seems promising so far and the character doesn't seem as naive as most fantasy anime characters are. Though we will see what the future holds.

Overall I look forward to this series if the quality stays the same.

Okay this was at least better from what I expected (expected it to be total garbage and waste of time), maybe just because the animation, but I really do believe the animation here helped a lot to tell the approach in the characterization of the relationships between characters. I expect it will at least be a visual pleasure to watch

The animation was great and good start by setting up the world and the characters, felt the strong inspiration from Danmachi and Black Clover, it takes the best of both shows. A little cliche at times however great start.

Very average first episode propped up by some clever CG and rotoscoping usage to make the animation look smoother. It's gonna get gassed up harder then it deserves.

Calling the animation impressive would be an understatement. The fight scenes look pretty good, but I'm actually more mesmerized by the character animation in regular scenes, specially hard to animate sequences where characters are approaching closer to what would be considered "a camera" to give better depth. Even cloth animation (like Edwards robes) are quite complex to animate.

I'm still not fully onboard regarding the main character and the setting though. It does feel quite run of the mill fish out of water kind of scenario, and at the end the so called fish is easily stronger in his own field than any other. We've already seen it in Black Clover, and Mashle to name a couple.

I'll still stick to this one for a while longer. There might be something more interesting down the line regarding the story and it's characters.

Has nice animation. But plot-wise it was as generic as it could be. Such a shame that lots of great stories get buried because of low budget and these generic ones somehow get high budget.

This is a crazy hidden gem for me, never even heard about it until now and this is easily one of my fav 1st episodes for this season. Animation is beautiful in and out of combat. The Mc is very likeable even if its following a typical fantasy trope. Amazing execution, cant wait till next week.

I could be exaggerating or a prisoner of the moment, but right now as I type this comment, I really can’t think of 5 better premiere episodes in anime history. This was a love letter to the medium and Yoshihara reaffirming his status as one of the all time greats. Absolutely immaculate production values and an almost film like narrative to the first episode that draws you in and makes you want to learn more about Will, his childhood friend and this world. If this is any indication of how the rest of the series is gonna go, we could have an all time great on our hands.

Firstly, it’s hilarious that Omori sensei’s side work gets better production values and care than his main work, Danmachi. Imagine what Danmachi would look like with this type of muscle behind it! Story-wise, I’m getting heavy Nanatsuma and Black Clover vibes. Will feels so much like Asta with his underdog story, chasing after an idol, not being talented with magic, super strength, using swords etc. But the characters clearly draw a lot of inspiration from Danmachi archetypes as well. Collette and Will felt a lot like Bell and Hestia/Lili, concerned teacher.. you get the drift.

I also got some Kaiju 8 Mina and Kafka vibes from the promise he made with his friend to stand at her side, very fresh in my mind since we just said goodbye to that show.

It’s not groundbreaking, and definitely plays into a lot of shonen tropes. But I think even if the animation weren’t as good as it is, this still would’ve been a very well received first episode due to its narrative and 3 act structure. I found myself wanting to know more about the Magia Vander, the tower/dungeon, the school and Will himself. Omori sensei’s worldbuilding has always been amazing so I’m sure this’ll be no different.

I tell ya what though, those nobles who were shit talking Will and ended up getting bailed out by him after the gorgeously animated Minotaur fight definitely won’t be slandering him anymore lmao.

Amazing premiere. I have to retract my Elusive Samurai award damn, this is now the best premiere of the season and one of the all time greats.

I did watch the trailer for this a few weeks ago but didn't notice the amazing animation. Put on the episode on a whim and I could not believe my eyes.

Of course the action scenes packed a punch, but it was the little moments that stood out. Some shots where characters walk/stumble around felt almost surreal. Or when Will pumped his fist after earning some credits. Even the way the clothes flap and the hair bounce was great.

This might be the best moving show of Summer 2024, even if I'm not that fond of the art style and definitely not impressed by the writing so far.

EDIT: Watched the episode again, and I was a lot more irritated by the basic writing this time around... Until I hear good things about the story later in the season, I'm taking this back to the store.

A pretty tough time at the academy for Will.
It seems just about everyone wants him to fail because of his lack of magic aptitude.
I like there is someone like Workner who is able to see his true potential as a fighter.
I am very happy Will was able to put people like Sion & Edward in their place showing off just how amazing he actually is.
Not sure if he will make it to Elfaria by the end of the season, but I am hoping he gets to see his childhood friend again.

Looks cool I guess. The animation is spectacular but it just seems like a generic power fantasy with a dude that people look down on and make fun of, only to then be shown that he's like this cool, badass, overpowered guy.

Still gonna be watching a bit more though, see where it goes and what it brings to the table or if it's just another generic power fantasy non magic user in a magic university type of show.

Extremely crispy animation. The setting is superficially generic anime fantasy/isekai, but the production team did one heck of a good job of polishing the environment.

The story does show signs of promise. If things go well, this may well be the surprise of the season.

It's kinda like Mashle but no plot twist and comedy behind the action of MC, however the storyline is good enough, demographic of academy which is like Mashle
@MJR53 But in Mashle, Mash isn’t a pushover and actually can stand up for himself. Even though Mash is oblivious he certainly is no pushover compared to Will. He gets bullied but doesn’t nothing about it and is content with the treatment and is even kind to the bully. I feel like a lot of Japanese authors confuse being kind to being a complete pushover

Honestly this is a breath of fresh air I have been waiting for. In a realitively mediocre season, this is a shining light. The anime blew me away to be frank, and sound design was unbeliveable and Honestly the story was quite exciting, exciting enough that I went and searched for the source material straight away because I know for a fact its going to be difficult to wait for the next episode to come out. This will be on the anime of the season if they can continue the quality of the episodes moving forward and I have really high hopes for this, especially since the author is the creator of Danmachi

Came out of nowhere, hits like an isekai truck.

The production value of this series is on the level of Frieren.
While lacking the aforementioned epic LoTR level storytelling.

Don't let the generic underdog portrayal detract you from this adrenaline fueled ride. You will have missed something special.

Not the best work your going to see in years, sure. Its a fair detraction.

Passing this up as a detractor... Absolutely a mistake.

Everything from the fingers of a boss adjusting his grip on his held great sword. Almost attempting to associate his incredible mass. As to the frequent knife juggling, and or dexterity of a common DnD rouge.

That a 3-5m long Guts greatsword. Straight out of the gates of hell itself.
Could be handled not by an unthinkingly oaf of a demon.

But setup the scene as an incredibly skillful.
Perfectly balanced extension of a totalitarianly superior being.

Then just watch our, relatively, wet towel level lead.
Absolutely present a cautious clearly non-shonen protagonist.
Ramp up in his fight.

Starting off learning. Then ending not leading by learned trial of combat.
But in solidarity to his confirmed confidence in absolute skill.
Between individuals of the blade.

The exact same attitude that one elf granny. Refuses to part with.
Perfectly expressing what actual wisdom. Is to those who've gleaned it.
Having never existed anywhere besides the frontier.

Thats what Wistoria is setting itself up to be.
By its production value alone.

If they keep this up. It may not reach the pinnacle due story alone.
But damn if you cannot be impressed by an effort.
Which can carry a work all the way to above 8/10 on its first premier.
Then substantiate that it deserves that at least.

For me, absolutely agree. Easy 8/10.
If it only goes up from here... We'll see where that leads us.
