Another anime this season with magic elements, academy, and protrayed as an underdog. Will isn't anything special but he has an ambition.

Magic seems like an important part of their world so that's going to be a recurring element. Not a fan of Colette so far. She's kinda loud although supports Will as a friend and doesn't see him as an outcast. First episode felt average imo but it sets up for the main story well. Will has to prove himself beyond just his words.

Man, again that “I can’t use magic but I’m studying in a magic school and moreover am aiming for the top spot as well”, plot? At this point you don’t even have to watch the actual thing to guess the story to some.. no, to a complete extent. Dude looks as clumsy as the main guy of author’s other work, and tbh, as you could guess, he gets bullied at school for his inability to use magic, is completely content with the treatment, and yeah, most importantly, there’s already a girl who for some reason has hots for him… SIGH.

Same old dungeons, same old monsters, same old drill… yeah. Though I could say the thing is he gets academic credits here, instead of maybe levelling up like a game character. Of course, not even the first episode and the main guy already has pissed off his bully, not because of the obvious reasons, but because he defeated the mega monster of some kind… just from his freaking sword lol. Very banal stuff all around, the likes of which we see twice or thrice every season. Hope the studio could hold up with the animation going forward, if nothing, as it seems the only bright thing in the midst of all the cliche stuff.

From the author of DanMachi, novelist Fujino Omori is back with his sole other series to be adapted into anime: Tsue to Tsurugi no Wistoria a.k.a Wistoris: Wand and Sword. The manga is more like the author's side project, if anything, aided by legendary veteran director Tatsuya Yoshihara, who directed the juggeraut series that is Black Clover.

If you have any assumptions of MC Will Serfort being like Bell Cranel, it's more or less being the same ballpark, but in fact, like the Harry Potter inspired setting that it comes from (Mashle being one, and is rather in your face), Will is more like Asta, the ONE outlier who can't use magic, where it reigns supreme in Rigarden Magic Academy. Taught by Professor Edward Serfence who very much emphasizes the importance of magic, he gives off the aura that the former must buck up against a class full of skillful magic classmates who bullies him to no end, and only being saved by only friend of Colette Loire, another student of the same class whom he admires in a straight face.

It's a true fantasy at that for the world, and a promise that Will made to his childood friend to become a Magia Vander (likewise with Mashle being a Divine Visionary), one of the mighty magicians who sit atop the Wizard's Tower, but that as he is now, he's just too much of a weakling who can barely do anything. The credits that he earns, while not much, his aide Professor Workner leaks him the way to a Baskerville in the depths of the dungeon, which Sion and his lackeys overhear to try to get the upper hand against Will.

Oh the parallels of meeting the Basketrville, the looks of a high-credit Evil Sentinel minotaur that's insanely difficult to defeat, not even Sion can make it n terms of his high-level magic. This leaves Will to take the stand against the hefty monster, going out of his comfort zone to defeat it with his sheer swordsmanship, which makes up for his lack of magic skills, which of course, pisses off Professor Edward through Workner who uses his magic ball to seek the action from Kiki's crystal.

I'd swear that Will's VA Kohei Amasaki sounds a lot like Bell's VA Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, and the production ain't half bad at all from Actas and Bandai Namco Pictures, if a slightly better J.C.Staff production-wise with Tatsuya Yoshihara's rather impressive directing.

Still, if this is DanMachi all over again in a different skin with the likes of a much more serious Mashle, I'm all here for it.

The action sakuga show of the season directed by the man himself, Tatsuya Yoshihara, is finally here. Gives off major Black Clover vibes, which is fitting considering Tatsuya storyboarded the Black Clover Movie.

As if having Tatsuya wasn't enough to give that Black Clover feel, the story is legit the same thing lol. Asta over here, I mean Will, has not magic and made fun of for it yadda yadda yadda. So basically yeah, this is Black Clover but better animation lols. Though if there was one difference, it's that not just the students are clowning Will, it's the teachers too...??? That aside, fuck man does the animation look stellar. That scene where Will is apologizing to the sensei, those hand smears were stellar.

Whole plot seems rather generic, with the goal of becoming the Wizard King equivalent of this world just this time because a childhood friend made a promise with you when you were kids long ago. The fights are the going to be the real center of attention ofc, JUST HOLY FUCK THAT ENTIRE FIGHT WITH WILL AND THE MONSTER. ACTUAL FEAST TO THE EYES. If anything there are a lot of things to be excited for when it comes to this show animation wise. And we got a name drop in first episode. Lets go lols.

PENGUIN RESEARCH's OP is one hell of a banger.

As a sakugatard, the sakuga and animation are out of this world. This will no doubt be the sakuga heavy show of the season. AND I'M ALL HERE FOR IT.

Yoshihara is SO back dude. Feels like I'm watching Chainsaw Man again -- I couldn't stop pausing and rewinding to take screenshots and fawn over the animation lmfao.

All that being said, I found several of the characters quite charming already. That + the arresting direction + the stellar action towards the end = premiere of the season!

My expectations were unrealistic and somehow they were completely exceeded. Sasuga Yoshihara, you cooked.

@Softhenic03 I can assure you after the first major arc of this series "the underdog non magic aiming for the top spot" won't bother that much, if there's anything that makes this series a separate thing is that how well it pays off, well thats as far as I can say, and the manga only has 40 chps

As first impressions go, the plot is on the generic side, but good enough to leave me intrigued. And I'm sure they wouldn't give this kind of animation budget to a subpar show. Which to also note, the animation is too good. I hope they didn't blow it on the pilot episode.

The story is good
That I'm sure off let's see how far and good the anime adaptation gonna be?
Ch29 I'm hopeingg for that but at this pace I think it's gonna be before that
However we do hear
That narration and we have that character in manga so S1 might introduce him .

The story and the setting is bland and nothing noteworthy whatsoever but the action looked good and the overall animation quality was a lot better than what you would normally get from a very generic sounding series like this. Plenty of sakuga there so people obsessed way too much with that will get their fair share to eat here with this episode and potentially the rest. Hope that the characters have a lot more to offer since the characters weren't that notable to me so far, especially Will besides how his action scenes looked thanks to the animation carrying here. Don't really have any expectations for this still after the episode, could see myself being surprised by this by the end and can easily see myself being very bored of this the rest of the way despite the action since the plot and characters matter more for me generally speaking, and that's the aspect I've not found myself attached too whatsoever with this episode.

It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

Entering a new world of magic! We've gotten a few of these now, fantasy series set in a world where everyone can use magic except the protagonist. So while its not something wholly new I am already interested after this first episode. Following a young boy named Will whom cannot use said magic that is so prevalent in this world. Bullied by not only his fellow students but teachers as well, hate to see it. Not everyone is mean to Will thankfully as he does have a friend and he has a teacher who's trying to help him still pass somehow. Without magic it seems impossible for Will to graduate considering credits earned through magic study is a third of their grade basically. The dungeon scenes were absolutely the best part of the episode. Some incredible animation on display, the fluid action shots all looked so clean and smooth. Will using his sword to cleave monsters was very satisfying, it looked spectacular. If we can get action scenes like that often then this will be fun. Even the regular mundane scenes had very fluid smooth animation. Every shot of the characters walking or talking looked great. Will coming in to save his bully not because he's some noble hero who always does what's right but because he made a promise to his childhood friend that he would rise to meet her heights. A nice touch and a way to not make Will holier than thou type character. Very much enjoyed this first episode lets see where this goes!

I'm not up to date with its manga but I have read this. Didn't even know it was getting an anime, too many fantasy shows, can't remember all their names. Story itself isn't anything new, in fact it's a pretty typical magic school fantasy and where the MC can't use the main concept of power but stands out in some other way.

However, what was the most surprising were the visuals. They were great, both the animation and art. Really liked the lighting during the last few shot of Will and the girl before the end credit. Really hope it can manage for the entire series.

Fascinating world building by Fujino sensei again and they cooked with the adaptation, looked so neat and beautiful. Like damn that was breathtaking, absolute cinema.

While the base setting is nothing new with the two mc, we even had a similar thing just last season in kaiju 8. It's the world building and everything else that seperates this from the others of similar kind and you can count on Fujino sensei to do just that. We got an epic fight from the getgo which very much reminded me of the iconic Bell vs Minotaur fight from sensei's other work, Danmachi. What a spectacular fight this was and props to the staff for doing great work with it. MC is likeable and fmc is so beautiful. Just wait there girl, he'll catch up to you. Kiki is so cute btw, where do I find one? Please. The other girl is really nice too and mc being so smooth she's charmed. Also it was satisfying watching the bully piss himself already and next up is the teacher. The animation in general looked so good and the character designs as well. Got very excited watching the episode and super hyped for more.

Not going to say it's not cool looking, but the dialogue is so bad. Let's give an impromptu rant describing the setting and MC's role in it. Not like he's been in the school for years. Or we could literally shout out his praises that are somehow a secret even though he's well known as being there on monster hunting credits alone. Will have to see if the action keeps up to cover for the other failings.

In a world of magic, our MC has no magic but is physically overpowered. I wonder where I've seen that before...

The plot is generic, but I'm still pretty interested to see how it develops. The visuals, however, look really good.

This is amazing from the production-side of things like ALL AROUND. The music didn't get enough mention here though, really strong in that point.

Elusive Samurai is pretty much about the same but i don't find the story too accessible, this one here is very straightforward though, might be the one getting all the traction.

Not cool looking? Okay. He's not well known for being there for monster hunting credits. They lool down upon him and don't think much of his dungeon work at all as shown in the episode itself. Idk how did you came to that conclusion.

@MegamiRem Double negative there. I'm saying it does look cool. Can't fault it for the action shots. And they clearly do know that he gets his credits from the dungeons, which is what makes it weird that even the Snape ripoff either has no idea how challenging the monsters are or has never wondered how the main is capable.

Everyone is pointing out how similar this is to Mashle, yet no one seems to see that the cat is clearly taken from Blue Exorcist. Wake up sheeple!

On a more serious note, this is a clear frontrunner for best animated show of the season. Plot-wise...well, we'll have to wait and see.

I lowkey thought it was gonna be the usual 'person with no magic in a world of magic' trope (which I mean it IS but-) but honestly this one is looking really hopeful to be decent! The animation looked super nice? Like idk everyone looks really good?

The plot is somewhat predictable but it makes up for it with the action sequences and stuff? Music kinda litty too!! I literally picked this up thinking it would be terrible and I'm surprised to find I quite enjoyed it and genuinely like Will which is unusual.... I don't typically end up liking the protags in this sort of trope (Exhibit A: Asta.)

Also that Ahoge haha.. man it's huge :''')

I misread the first so my bad. As for the second as I said they don't just care and think much of his work. They were even belittling him by saying he's been taking out small fries to get his credits. Their prejudice is really bad, specially cause he can't use magic. Also he's been only doing the upper levels too and didn't go in too far. The monster he defeated this episode is from further down. Also as you mentioned the professor didn't know what he was capable off either. Once again coming from his prejudice since he cant use magic.

man this season just keeps getting better, winter and spring did NOT have me this excited. i only started this because i heard the director of black clover worked on this, but seeing how good the visuals are reminded me of chainsaw man and to my surprise, he even worked on a few episodes in that. absolutely loving it visually, plot and mc are more on the generic side, but it didn't hinder my enjoyment and the worldbuilding is pretty decent. music was also really good, hope it keeps up this level with the sakuga and i'm definitely interested to see more.

@Kai200X Mange/Anime/LN are very bandwagon-y. Once something works, everyone does it.

No magic but super physical strgenth? Done multiple times.
Isekai and then betrayed because they think the MC is weak but MC is actually the strongest? Done multiple times.
Isekai but the MC is a monster? Done multiple times.
Adventure where you climb a tower? Done multiple times.
Isekai with video game stats? Done multiple times.
Isekai/adventure with MC who just want's to "live a chill life"? Done multiple times.

Etc.

On the plus side, it feels like we get more shows per season than we used to a decade ago, and I'm sure this plays into that.

It's a more serious version of Mashle, which itself is a less serious version of Harry Potter.

I'm concern about Sion's lackeys but look like they survive otherwise this incident would be a much bigger deal.

Anyway, Will's childhood friend reach dungeon level 37 (info after commercial break cut) so Will still has a long way to go, but I believe he'll get there eventually.

Note that Will's current deepest dungeon reach might be deeper than 7. Maybe he goes deeper but does not tell his favorite teacher.
