I saw this today at a screening in Shinjuku with the cast members giving a talk afterwards. Cloverworks really went above and beyond with this adaptation from the outset. Things such as the opening scene which were in the manga mere text boxes are now contextualised and made interesting with a unique art style and the appearance of being pages of a different manga. The scenes of Tokiyuki running away, which are of course central to the story, are also converted from motion lines into full fledged CG tracking shots which are a spectacle to behold each time this happens. The sudden transition to the beheading of Tokiyuki's brother was another really impactful moment of the episode as it transitioned from comedy focused to suddenly really violent and tragic. As a whole this was a great set up for the series with the narration making it feel like something big, and with the Cloverworks animation to back it up I have high hopes for what the rest of this series will bring.

From the mangaka of Ansatsu Kyoushitsu a.k.a Assassination Classroom, Yusei Matsui is back once again to the anime scene for the 2nd anime adaptation of his latest work: Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi a.k.a The Elusive Samurai.

DISH//'s OP is an unexpected banger, I'm loving it. Botchi Boromaru's ED...is the same, I can't believe we're getting two banger bops of songs.

Based on Japan's Nanboku-chō period, this is the retelling of Kamakura in 1333, starting with Tokiyuki Hojo, the next successor of the Kamakura Shogunate, who's setting a rather bad example for everyone, much less his estranged father who's as much a pawn in the entire clan. The elusive, lazy puppet who's yet to grow, both father and daughter duo of Shinto priest Yorishige and Shizuku Suwa coming to Kakamura for prayers, the former has the vibes of JJK's Satoru Gojo, though he can be both funny and serious when he needs to.

But this happy moment does not last long, because the uprising that started from the same person who has the potential to become Kamamura's lead samurai, Takauji Ashikaga, betrayed them all, and Yorishige has Tokiyuki escorted away out of danger...and can even joke about his circumstances. For sure, the 24 days that Takauji has planned it all, Yorishige really did throw him a curveball, literally castng him into the lurch to test his mantle to come out alive on his own.

The hero of killing vs. the hero of saving, this is Tokiyuki's fate to reclaim Kamakura, and a journey that would define who he is: The Elusive Samurai.

After last season's Wind Breaker, CloverWorks is really giving this show the adaptation that it deserves. Hope they can last the long run, because I love this premiere a lot.

The seasonal popular well-animated shounen of the season has arrived, this time from the mind that brought you Assassination Classroom, Yusei Matsui.

DISH's OP is an OP I could see growing on me. Botchi Boromaru's ED is okay. They have better songs coming this season alone.

In Kamakura, 1333, during Ashikaga Takauji's arrival, Tokiyuki, the heir to the Hojo clan, led a sheltered life admired for his ability to evade his responsibilities. However, Takauji's alliance with Emperor Go-Daigo sparked chaos, resulting in Tokiyuki losing his family and home. Offered refuge by Suwa Yorishige, Tokiyuki initially doubted his future but embraced his survival instinct when pushed into danger, earning Yorishige's respect. Joined by allies Kojiro and Mochizuki Ayako, they fled to Shinano, where Tokiyuki resolved to reclaim Kamakura and honor his clan's legacy, inspired by Yorishige's belief in his latent heroism.

Cloverwork's poured a lot of money into this one. As they do to every one of their productions these days. Production values aside though, from the beginning you can tell this won't be that happy show the first part of the episode made it out to be. It was a bit TOO happy and cheerful. So when that massacre happened, it was no surprise. Gotta say though, it was more brutal and gruesome than I thought it would be. Cloverwork's didn't hold back at all. Entire runnning sequence was A FEAST TO THE EYES. If Matsui doesn't make the most of the MC's unique traits, the series will suffer. But for now, I'm all in.

Well done Cloverworks. Once again you elevate the original source material, as if it's not good already. This'll be one hell of a ride. COUNT ME IN.

I read manga for this and looks great in terms of character personality thanks to Tokiyuki Houjou. The setting is also somewhat more refreshing compared to the million mounts of fantasy/isekai worlds we're dumped into this Summer season.

High hopes for ths. Lots of chapters to adapt.

The author has written one of my favourite series ever before this, so a bit of expectations were already there, and tbh, I don’t know how the story would unfold from here on, but Cloverworks are already giving their best as I could see. Also, I kind of expected a very serious and grim theme right from the outset, but good to see it was a bit… more than a bit honestly, lighthearted. As I mean anime as a medium does try to portray kids NOT as kids, more than often, so it’s always refreshing to see someone acting like a genuine kid they are, Tokiyuki in this case.

Have to give props to that sudden turn of events out of nowhere though, I mean rebellion against the rulers was a norm back in those days, and it did show here as well the absolute worst which comes out of it. Felt a bit for Tokiyuki, but yeah you need to accept the reality, and be reasonable, not just for yourself but for your people as well. The comedy could’ve been timed well, as it did seem misplaced quite a few times lol. But yeah, that’s the only gripe.

Solid first episode, and neat OP/ED. Looking forward to more.

t's going to be good, but it's completely wrong historically especially since the Hojo clan was responsible for their downfalls. And I'm not talking about the fact that they did worse by destroying other clans and taking control of the Shogun.

I like the author, but I don't see how he can do better than the historical tales which are much more epic. It’s my historian side that comes out. I'll probably like it depending on how the episode goes.

CloverWorks and the animation staff involved did such a damn good job with this, the show looks very colorful, expressive and the sequences with Tokiyuki running away, whether from retainers or by folks genuinely looking to kill him and assert the complete end of the Kamakura Shogunate and it looked fantastic. The characters can be too over-the-top as a whole involved but CloverWorks did a job that still made this a fun episode to watch via its presentation. The setting's interesting too, and knowing that Yuusei Matsui, the person who wrote one of my favorite and personal series of all time in Assassination Classroom, this is something that has genuine promise. I don't know if the writing will be as fun as Assassination Classroom was or if it will be another Neuro, which I didn't care for much. But visually, this was so good and I liked how dark it really can be with Takauji's coup d'etat showcasing the brutality with many beheaded, blood everywhere, towns under flames which contrasted the more peaceful nature of the area when Tokiyuki was running away initially. Don't really like Suwa much, he ain't a Korosensei in terms of likability but it will be interesting to see how he, Shizuku and Tokiyuki can recover from the damages there and the loss of the Kamakura Shogunate to rebuild themselves into Tokiyuki being a real hero.

I will say though, as good as this looks, while I did mostly enjoy Assassination Classroom's comedy, I didn't really enjoy it here whatsoever (especially with the setting and tone at hand). The comedy from Suwa's part did feel like a turn off a lot of the time in a world and situation like that and it did feel too forced as a whole that it gave a tonal whiplash in a dangerous setting like this that felt so distracting at times and took away from the other things that were making it good. It's what helps this still feel like a shounen manga and not a seinen given the brutality that took place but still, that part of the episode was pretty bad and it was all over this. I do hope the comedy can either be better or toned down but I don't expect that to be the case. Emotionally, expected a bit more from Tokiyuki's side given what happened to people he knew there but it could also be him still not internally processing everything. And overall, the main trio from the looks of things, not quite sold on them as the cast just yet. Didn't really love any of them as characters by the end here so hope for them to improve with time.

So overall, it is a memorable premiere for sure. Don't know if this was great as a whole since some parts did make it a bit annoying to watch at times but all I can say is CloverWorks and the animation staff involved did real justice to its key moments visually. I just hope the story the rest of the way can do the production justice.

Looks really sick but Suwa Yorishige ruined the ep for me, obnoxious as hell to watch and comedy sucked ass. Hurt the momentum of the kickass action and animation ngl. Hope other episodes can be anywhere near as hype as the peaks of the animation from this, and hope this isnt just a typical all style, no substance show by the end.

This is very expensive anime. Hand-drawn animation is very costly. Definitely the priciest in this season. How come this anime receive such a large budget? Yeah, I know it's from Shonen Jump manga but not all Shonen Jump adaptation receive this kind of luxury. Depending on the rest of future episodes, this could be CloverWorks's best creation to date.

I never got around to picking up the manga despite liking Assassination Classroom, but this left a good first impression so far. I'm really liking the vibrant and expressive colors, and the animation looked great as well, especially when Tokiyuki was evading everyone after getting pushed off the cliff. There was no reason for that to go so hard lol. Premieres do typically tend to have some of the strongest animation since you want to impress viewers right away, but hopefully the animation holds up as we go forward.

Idk why it took me a sec to connect the fact that when the ball hit the ground and transitioned to a head being cut off, that it was Tokiyuki's brother's head. Sheesh, talk about going from lighthearted to dark just like that. And the rest of the episode was tragic as Tokiyuki lost everything. Unfortunately this kind of stuff was all too common during this period of history. The OP/ED are also pretty good, things are looking promising with this one.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Starting to think the hype for a show is inversely proportionate to its quality because wtf all the best premieres this season have had no hype! Like where the hell did this show come from, Cloverworks knocked this first episode out of the park and if this is any indication of how the rest of the series is gonna look, look out for a dark horse AOTS contender.

There’s no better studio to handle shows that have a blend of action and comedy than Cloverworks. They’ve shown us time and time again with Spy x Family, Balance Unlimited, Windbreaker and now this, but this actually looks better than anything they’ve done imo.

First 12 minutes of the episode totally lull you into thinking it’s gonna be a peaceful slice of life anime about a prince who likes to slag off his training, only to seamlessly transition, thru the use of the ball hitting the ground turning into a decapitated head, into the reality of the era. This period in Japanese history was filled with bloodshed, war, betrayals and stuff that would make George RR Martin’s novels look like Disney colouring books and they nailed that here.

The bloodshed, the fall of the Hojo clan and their territory, it all feels so sudden and you’re as broken as Tokiyuki is by the end of it. Everything’s going so well, you get the prophecy from the sage and boom, your world is flipped upside down. Brilliant use of direction to evoke empathy from the audience for the MC. Almost a Ghost of Tsushima style start to this.

The animation during the scene of Suwa pushing Tokiyuki off the cliff and him running thru the crowd of warriors was astounding.. this really is one of the best looking shows this year and one of the best premieres as well. After the success of Shogun I’m very much down for more stuff in this era of Japanese history and can’t wait to see how Tokiyuki gets his revenge.

The day that everything changed for the young Tokiyuki. From lackadaisical days of running from instructors to stressful nights of running from traitorous samurai. First off I have to commend this show for how pretty it is. By god did cloverworks really have this premiere popping, from the animation to the art style itself. The vibrancy with which this episode had wowed me, every single shot looked perfect. Tokiyuki running from his archery teachers was so smooth to watch. The sudden shift over to the horror of Takauji betrayal keeping that same vibrant art made it all the more powerful. The sudden shift to from the easy going court prince lifestyle to the horrors of war ravaging the country was intense. I hadn't heard much about this series so that head falling instead of the ball Tokiyuki and his brother were kicking really surprised me. That was a crazy first episode, throwing right into the deep end with Tokiyuki beginning his hero's journey. Yorishige is an interesting character, his future sight mumbling was very peculiar. Tokiyuki writes him off as a fake shaman but there's obviously more to this guy. The scene where Yorishige pushed Tokiyuki down into the samurai was so cool. The way it looked as Tokiyuki zipped past them all while they literally killed each other trying to get him was fantastic. Ending with that beautiful shot of Tokiyuki like a bird rising up. He's gonna have to be like a Phoenix rising from these ashes if within two years he become a hero that shakes Japan. I'm very excited to see where this goes now!

The transition from the ball being kicked and lost to a head coming down was impactful to say the least. Also, when the priest threw Tokiyuki down into the village with the savages it reminded me of people being thrown into the water to learn how to swim. Anyways, the production values are high and it reminds me of Apothecary Diaries in that respect.

I did not like this premiere as much as I thought I whould.
I don't have to comment on the animation, of course it's amazing, but I don't vibe with the story so far.
My main problem is with the comedy.
A lot of jokes didn't land for me and I didn't feel like they fit in with the darkness of the second half.
The show has the Comedy tag so I guess the rest of it won't be as dark and then the jokes would make more sense.
I hope this story evolves into something great, 'cause for now it seems like a typical shōnen revenge plot.

12:04 HOLY THAT TRANSITION! OMG!

13:09 wtf damn everything just went from 0 to 100 in an instant. One second they were playing next everyone is dead wtf

19:07 man they got bad aim. I know he's a hero and everything and other guy some super priest with max holy aura but how tf is not a single arrow hitting.

I love how we just witnessed a massacre but then the Ed is like HAPPY!BUS! FUNNY FACES! DJ! SINGING! DRINKING!

I'm really glad I didn't keep reading in the manga now so I can enjoy the anime first. FANTASTIC! first episode! CLOVERWORKS GREAT JOB! The brutality and gore was way more than I expected! Looks like this anime is going to be a lot more exciting than I expected!

Also I know he's a boy but for some reason my brain keeps thinking he's a cute girl. Well I guess nothing wrong with a cute hero.

Like the face at 18:32 with the blush and everything...it's awakening some feelings I didn't think I'd have. This is wrong but um... smash!

Nakamura Yuuichi was a great choice for the chaotic priest guy! This is going to be like Gojo but on crack levels of unhinged lol.

Okay, that was a solid pilot episode! If they could somehow keep the pacing a bit more under check going forward, this should be one of the most interesting titles of the season.

As many have highlight above, we have seen a very successful adaption in the creator’s previous Ansatsu Kyoushitsu series and this fact alone hooked me in initially. Can’t say I see a lot of similarities based on the episode but when you look at it deeply, there are certain gags and the suicide theme that matches. Historical setting has got my attention and CloverWorks wonderful stuff stand out too, this has got the ingredients for greatness!

Both the Op and ED were fantastic! ED visuals gave off Mashle vibes to me, very unconventional but a welcome treat nonetheless. As for the Op, I’m already in with the song and the visuals don’t hold it back either at all.

That's how you do a first episode!! Of course the next episodes are gonna be soft and nothing special, cause the point of the series is not the war to bring the Ashikaga clan to egemony, but the glimps of violence in this first episode were, as a Japanese history enthusiast, amazing, everything is top notch! Still gonna like this series, even tho the focused is not war and history but more of a soft shonen tale

Man, CloverWorks is on fire this year! Last season they gave us Wind Breaker and now now they're giving us such a piece of art, a mixture of the historic Japan blended with some fantasy from the mangaka/author of Assassination Classroom. A solid first episode introducing the main character, all his surroundings and something to pursuit, a mission if you will. As for new series (and a sucker for historic/fantasy anime like Yatagarasu... GO WATCH YATAGARASU!!!), this is the one I was more looking for and I'm pleased, really looking forward for Tokiyuki adventures along with the friends he'll make while he's at it.

This feels very different compared to Assassination Classroom, which was written by the same author as this, and it's a cool setting for sure, dealing with the Kamakura era and its shogunate. I really enjoyed the brutality of the betrayal, with all the gore, and the transition was sudden and worked well. The tonal shifts are a little awkward and jarring admittedly, especially with some of the comedy with Yorishige that was a bit cheesy. In the end, while it's dark, you can still tell that it is a shounen manga rather than seinen. Nonetheless, this has some promise, and could very well be one of the better anime of the season.

No way you called the animation a slideshow.
@Peenutz yes I did. Have you watched the episode itself? It's like 10 frames per second at the max. Also it's rife with still shots and only something moving. Like people not moving at all while he runs through them. Still shots of people and only their mouths moving and even then it's like 3 frames swapped. So so many shortcuts and they try to mask them by panning or zooming in and out. Art is very pretty but it's far from fluid or good animation. The main battle where he's trying to survive is the most obvious part of this.

Am reading responses here and people really need to learn the difference between animation and art style. Show has gorgeous art but it's animated like shit. There are so many frames missing between the key frames. It's like they make 3 images, maybe four, for each dialog and then swap 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 2, 3, 1... It's just frames repeated. There are very little dynamic shots. All of them are still with multiple layers of repeated frames. Perhaps panning or zooming in/out. Only exception is that fight where he's trying to survive and that scene only lasts like 30 seconds but it's still choppy.

ClowerWorks is known for their animation, but while art is still great it feels too choppy for their work. Look at, for example, Spy x Family. Top notch animation all around. People reacting and moving. While talking their bodies are not still. It's just good.
