I wasn't spectacular, but it was alright. It had the kind of vibe I dig, so it's a shame it held itself back too much in exploring the weird and tragic. Still, I must say, that last line before the credits by Sumireko sent me wheezing, even though I was expecting it XD. Overall a solid show that maybe wasted its potential a bit too much. Not a disappointment, but definitely a shame. |

LMFAO that ending was amazing. I never had a show make me tear up one moment and then burst out laughing in such a short time; Oto's Farewell to Sumireko-san in particular was very sad, but beautiful (as was their relationship as a whole). And Oto's Ramen scene was pretty funny. Now the very last scene and literally the last line had me on edge but then bursting out laughing. I thought it was pretty unexpected all things considered, but I think it perfectly captures and summarizes the style/flow of "Mysterious Disappearances" show. I think my enjoyment of this show came from how appealing the art was, how beautiful and sometimes haunting the music was (music was REALLY good actually). And finally the steady humor that contrasted heavily with everything else going on in the show. Lastly the opening scene for this final episode reminds me much of Studio Ghibli's "Grave of Fireflies"; which was an interesting parallel/reference. Easiest 9/10 given.. and I really want a Season 2, but I think it was wrapped up pretty tidy. |

Awwwww the ending was really bittersweet imo I wish we got to learn more about Oto’s hometown and more about the cat girl but hey at least it’s hinted that Oto was the one who left the book (since in her past life she was buried with the glutton book) and that Adashino is alive and back working with Sumireko bro deserves to be happy considering for most of the entire show bro has been suffering since Sumireko got ahold of that book that turns her younger. Bittersweet ending with a side of tears is what came over me during this episode🥹🥲
When Oto started crying bc she has never once thanked Sumireko for saving the day during the times they were together working on a cases and stuff, that part legit had me in tears Oto one of the most sweetest kindest anime characters I’ve ever seen in recent times and it hurt my heart so much seeing her in pain crying bc she’s never gonna see Sumireko ever again☹️☹️
Also I’d like to add that it’s actually really sad to me that Oto won’t ever see Nodoka ever again those 2 were meant for each other man this ending is just so sad to me bc Oto deserves all the happiness in the world bc she’s one of the nicest anime character in animanga I’ll miss her and her cutesy adorable voice☹️🥺☹️😢💜
Overall 8/10
Personal Score 9/10 ILL MISS YOU OTO!!!😩
Why they make cat girl caked TF UP for? GYATTTT DAMNNN😫😩😫😩😫

I wish there was more of her; she's a really cute character. This show had many beautiful moments, and appealing art/stories.. I will certainly add it to my Bluray collection for a rewatch. |

Alright ending id say. But i dislike how they close it by Sumireko still denying dude wish to bath with her. Need more justice to Disappearance-kun! More complain about how they skip the catgirl story, like what just i read in the comments, because i truly looking forward to it. Then by how they don't spoonfead you much about the whole Adashino matters, its a mixed feeling. Overall time constrain died this kind of anime. Normal for industry but not so a very good way to enjoy the whole watch. Perhaps a source reader might have the more solid opinion. However as me its just your average supernatural show. Sugoi dekai per ten. |

@badabass Seems more unusual than average.. the average Super Natural show has no humor or slice of life. Mysterious Disappearance is closer to Call of the Night and Mieruko Chan; I've also seen it compared to Dark Gathering but I have yet to watch that (but will today.) So I will have to disagree with the average sentiment. |

@Jonas-K This show was more about the characters than the narrative itself. Mysterious Disappearances wasn't budgeted to present you with anything substantial narratively speaking. Instead it aimed to offer enjoyable characters, and good humor along with their short stories. The greater narrative of the show clearly takes a back seat for this production, but I think they worked with what they had to the best of their abilities. And yes.. Sumireko's tits are very much a part of that. So what you say has some validity. |

I would say that Dark Gathering is much more of a horror - probably the only one of all these which is principally or effectively exclusively a horror. This series and Yofukashi no Uta aren't and Mieruko-chan is a horror comedy. I won't lie and say that anything present here scared me because practically nothing does since a long time ago and I'm so numb and desensitized to horror at this point, but I actually found that there more moments in this series (Kaii to Otome) going for or achieving proper eerie than in Mieruko-chan where it was almost always played for laughs. The difference between this series and Mieruko-chan is that while there the horror was the source of the comedy and used for that purpose, here any horror elements and mystery-solving are generally separate from the comedic side of the series. Mieruko-chan could be seen as much more cohesive because it's much more simple in vision (at least from the first season of what we've seen thus far of the story) and in practice/execution. It's a straightforward horror comedy with one unifying idea. This is much more a mishmash and amalgamation of different genres like Mystery + Horror + Slice of Life + Comedy + Drama. This is probably the minority opinion even on this sub-forum among those who have seen both series, not to mention MAL in general (which is nothing new for me, so unsure why I'm announcing it), but having seen the entirety of both Dark Gathering and this series, even though I ended up both rating both a 6/10 I do feel that I preferred this series. Dark Gathering was decent enough, but for me was always going to be a 6/10, maybe 7/10-tier at best show, whereas for this I could easily see it being an 8/10 or even 9/10 if it actually had like 50 episodes like something like Higurashi and actual time and space to flesh out the depth of its characters, main plot, and all subplots. x2kill4 said: hmm still too many question in my head, like why oto wanting back to her home that bad? i mean she already has everthing in this world so why.. @WatchTillTandava Yes I agree with everything you say here. Dark Gathering (which I saw 2 episodes of) gets surprisingly dark given its overall style. Kaii comes out ahead for me too even if lacking in episodes. Unfortunately that show may remain untapped potential. And Mieruko-chan did have the more straight forward, and consistent vision as you suggest. What I will say also say about Mieruko-chan is that it did have some moments that took me aback; like finding out her dad is dead.. at this moment I felt a deep sadness for Mieruko-chan where I was not expecting it; I believe I already felt bad for her, but that revelation completely framed her situation for me. There were other surprises too like her affiliation with a shrine god who helped her fight the greater spirits and other supporting characters like her sensei who is initially painted as malicious, but turns out to be quite human and good hearted person despite everything. Incidentally I thought it interesting the parallel between Mieruko-chan and her sensei.. their resilience in the face of adversary; being haunted, misunderstood, and suffering from past trauma. Despite it all, they both still faced life earnestly and with as much kindness as they are afforded. In this respect I found the characters in this show relatable and likeable. |

Very thoughtful and accurate comments regarding Mieruko-chan. I only watched it once all the way through week to week as a seasonal back in the autumn of 2021, so compared to other series I've both seen and thought about a lot more since I discovered and watched them, this one was boiled down more in memory to a series of snapshot images of its most iconic bits and some random moments, but thinking back to it there is actually more depth and scenes involving tenderness and vulnerability of the characters than I gave it credit for. I'm reminded as well of the scene involving the older woman grandmother figure with Alzheimer's or some other form of dementia and Miko's passing interaction with her. Since we're agreed that Dark Gathering is more so off in a different category of being more strictly a horror series compared to the other three, and because you haven't yet seen the majority of it, now I'm curious about where you would rank the other three compared to one another (Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushi, Mieruko-chan, and Yofukashi no Uta), because for me, I rated this series a 6/10 as said, Mieruko-chan a 7/10, and Yofukashi no Uta a 5/10. But even though I rated Mieruko a point higher, I actually think that this series from among that group is my preferred favorite. Which doesn't mean I'm going to alter or edit the ratings now. Not because I refrain from ever doing so, but because I don't rate exclusively on personal enjoyment and personal meaning taken out of it - That's a large and substantial part of it, don't get me wrong; it's the significant majority of a rating in my eyes, but not the whole of the story. I also try to consider how well it was actually executed for what it was trying to do, or my interpretation/perception of what it was trying to do. And with that in mind, I thought Mieruko-chan was very finely executed and the most impressive of the series - like I can't point to one major thing it did very wrong or poorly in my judgment. Whereas I actually find some of the ideas involving the characters and plot in Kaii to Otome - Sumireko as a late 20s woman going through an early mid or quarter-life crisis, the notion of "talent" being valued because of who you are at a point in time (like age/youth, among other things) rather than what it actually is and what you actually do (Sumireko's writing), and some of the Japanese and regional East Asian mythologies and urban legends with a modernized spin combined with the whole extra-dimensional space zones and some grand regulator/overseer of Curiosities in the world as unnatural phenomena being gathered or collected in Kaii to Otome even more engaging and intriguing, but found the series' overall execution and corralling and harnessing them as one cohesive whole kind of a sloppy half-finished mess. Still, as I've said about this series numerous times now, I'll take it any day of the week over the octillionth generic isekai or romcom. So sticking with my own as: 1.) Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushi 2.) Mieruko-chan 3.) Yofukashi no Uta For those. But yeah, now I'd love to know yours. Also, if you end up continuing and ever finishing Dark Gathering, it'd be interesting to hear any thoughts derived from the experience from that one as well. |

@WatchTillTandava Yes Mieruko-chan does have parts that are endearing. The show maintains good engagement throughout, but its the key points of characterization that makes it all the more worthwhile to watch. I revisited the first two episodes, just recently after our discussions here, but I think its time for a full rewatch. Bad timing too since there are so many new shows to scope out. Heh. I think its great that you consider execution as part of your ratings even if a show is not exactly for you.. its nice to at least understand a shows angle and give credit where credit is due. Not always easy to do of course, but its nice to try to be fair and objective when possible. So actually with these three shows; Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushi, Mieruko-chan, and Yofukashu no Uta.. to be honest I think I enjoyed these shows just about equally, and I am a generous rater. At the time I gave Mieruko-chan and 8/10 on, then Yofukashu no Uta a 9/10 and finally Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushi a 9/10. Ill now explain a how I rated these shows.. I think Mieruko-chan sits well with an 8/10; It's a show that inspires some intrigue with its art style, its characters and their personal life/struggles. Commendably and like all of the shows being discussed here.. Mieruko-chan has a medley offerings; Interesting characters, humor, some mystery, and of course fan service. Offerings that are presented in their own distinct way by comparison to the others.. but overall similarly enjoyable. As I mentioned before one of the things that stood out to me with this show was how genuinely sweet some of the character moments are. Its been some time since my last watch, but having seen some episodes recently and from what I remember.. Mieruko-chan easily earns and 8/10 from me. Now with Yofukashu no Uta I also did enjoy this one quite a bit. As mentioned before I gave this show a rather high score of 9/10.. I think this is because of the voice work and the music which I am particularly partial to. I thought both these things were consistently great throughout my watch. It helps a lot that I am fan of most of the seiyuu's here and at least 6 are reoccurring favorites of mine; Tomatsu Haruka, Shirakawa Kiyosumi, Oozora Naomi, Amamiya Sora, and Sawshiro Miyuki are a pleasure to listen to because they bring much vibrancy and nuance to their characters. Other notable things from this show were the shots of the town and city at night; the colors although seemingly exaggerated just work and it really helped frame the chill vibe the show went for. Overall I thought the production values for the show to be relatively high for this kind of show or at the very least I felt like I saw and heard the passion that went into the show. And so Yofukashu no Uta easily earns the 9/10 for me. Finally we have Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushi.. this show from the very beginning reminded me of Yofukashu no Uta for one reason or another. Might be parts of its art, the colors, the humor style, its theme. Whatever the case it's a show that from episode 1 I knew I would enjoy. Good humor elevated by great seiyuu casting and voicework. Sound production was good in general, with a couple of excellent pieces that I thought heightened the emotional draw and immersion of the show. I thought the characters were great, their relationships and development. In particularly the relationships between Sumireko, Ren and Oto I thought were very sweet. I smiled and laughed more than I thought I would with this show, heck I even shed a tear or two.. but I didn't want to admit that! So lets say the music was really nice at those points. Finally I want to say that the character arcs themselves, and back stories although brief were surprisingly nice. The latter two supporting characters arcs, and finally Oto's/Ren were particular very sweet to me. Oh and the cat girl, her team of cats and their dance was so appealing and cute! So Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushi easily earns the 9/10 from me. I wish I had more of that cat girl, she was a cutie! Well I wish I had more of the show in general. Still what we got I thought was nice in and of itself. Overall I think I enjoyed these shows equally.. often times for similar reasons. Now if I had to rank them.. 1. Yofukashi no Uta 2. Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushi 3. Mieruko-chan Yofukashi no Uta has slightly better animation, color shading and sound production compared to Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushi. Humor is about equal, but I may have laughed and smiled more with Yofukashi. Yofukashi overall was a vibe; it's premise while simple I found well accompanied with its other qualities and It just barely ranks over Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushi.. a show that achieves similar things, but with slightly stronger character moments. So this is more or less how I rank show's and in particular how I ranked these shows! In general I come to these shows for laughs, smiles, cute characters, and immersion. And if the narrative is compelling then its even better! |

I liked this show, a kinda abrupt ending, saying goodbye without a goodbye, and lot of questions remains, but thats part of the mystery I guess Some questions like, who they really are ? where Oto is from ? why the bookstore back ? who is the catgirl and what she was supposed to do ? is Ren really back in the end ? What was real and wasnt real, so much mystery, maybe in a s2 or in the manga ~ |

Reply to LyLord
@Sleeping_Knight yeah, already seen that. But not that she is called Cat General. My dub just said "kit-tska" or "kitty".
@LyLord thanks for correction, i appreciate it. |

Honestly I'm very sad. Because I won't be able to see Oto again at the end. Even if this would be correct according to the story. |

Was pretty disappointed by this. Weird and hollow ending. From what I've read here I'll read the manga instead. |

How the bookstore appeared again? I am kinda confused. Was it the "Ossan"? I am also confused about Adashino. If I am not mistaken he is a "curiosity" as well. He came back after disappearing but I don´t really know how that worked. What I know is that some people get to live with the "power" of their curiosities after they are saved. Manga still ongoing, so probably Oto-chan will eventually come back. Not sure, however, how much this ending was an anime original or faithful to the manga. Maybe I will check out the manga. NGL this anime quickly reminded of Mongatari Series lol, specially whenever Umeno-sensei appeared and talked... she is Hanekawa´s seiyuu. Also both uses braids and glasses xD I wouldn´t say this is similar to Dark Gathering. The "dark" and "mystery" themes are there for both but how they were handle and everything else is very different. I wouldn´t say this is a ecchi anime as it´s here on MAL, but the fanservice scenes were definitely on point ;D In general, I enjoyed a decent amount. |

The beginning was totally grave of the fireflies. Also, Ren's face at the end when Sumireko said she wouldn't take a bath with him 🤣. Based on the comments, it seems the anime went with an original ending which means there's pretty much no intention to make season 2. But for what it's worth, the anime was pretty solid, nothing amazing but an intersting watch, plus Sumireko is an S tier waifu. Guess it's time to follow the manga to see how the rest of the story unfolds. |

I never write on the forums, let alone MAL, but I want to say this: the average score here below 7 is just a crime. This just shows how much the taste of the public here has degraded over all these years. |

A little disappointed with this end. As an Anime Only I really found this episode like it's rushing. Oto get the train, Ren disappear, Sumeriko go to the old librarie and let the librarian read her new work, she asks for a return of Ren after realising she needs him, that happen, and we learn with a normal life return at work that Oto could get back soon. It's like the Oto departure and Ren sacrifice never happened in the end. Actually. that's cool to see that they return, but at least this is a too simple way to make it. I really enjoyed the writting of the anime but this breaks my opinion in it. I remain on my end.. |

That was an underwhelming ending, I have to say. Judging by the replies, it seems like this was rushed with cherry picked moments to make up the ending. I'm not really sure why Oto had to leave, because it seemed like she already had the happy life she wanted all along? Now she has to leave her friends to go... somewhere? Back to the war-torn past, or just the afterlife? I don't think it was entirely clear. I was waiting for the moment when Oto would refuse to get on the train, but she got on and just left. Pretty unsatisfying. The sibling's backstory was basically Grave of the Fireflies, nearly beat for beat. After seeing that, it wasn't surprising to know that they were spirits. But Ren being Curiosity was somewhat interesting. I guess he wanted to stay, at least according to the bookstore woman, because he left regrets behind. So I guess his sacrifice for Oto was more or less meaningless. I did like his reaction to Sumireko's bath rejection though. Overall, I have to say I'm disappointed with this one. The premise and first episode had me really excited. I was under the impression this would be a series where they would go looking for Curiosities throughout the city, almost akin to series like Durarara, where they would be in this concrete jungle. Instead, it just kind of meandered from storyline to storyline. Another disappointment was Sumireko continually going back to the school, if this had a more seinen feel and focus, I think it would've been better. And with a weak ending, despite how smoking hot Sumireko was and her huge tits, I can only give this a 6 at best. |

I expecting a high hope in this Anime. The rest is pretty good, except the two last episodes. Like wtf the ending just leave cliffhanger like that? What happen to the cat lord? There's no way to defeat the cat lord? Why Oto-chan just leave like that? What relation to the first scene in Episode 12 which maybe Rei-nii past? Like all the journey just for that? What the fuck?. So many cliffhangers are there, but I just realize, how about I just check the manga of this? So after wasting time reading all chapters, now I know, this damn Anime studio got no budget for adapting the whole story. So many part they skip, especially the last volume of manga which they just made an original ending to end this Anime real quick, but ended up so fucking trilible. I recommend you just read the manga after episode 10 probably in chapter 38.5 or 39. Right after the Yorumun arc, which some part also skipped in this arc, but not really important rather than skip the whole arc and make a quick trilible ending for the Anime. This Anime should be end in episode 13 or better episode 14 something. But this studio can't afford extra time slot for Anime and rather just make a quick ending. But ok, good animation, I understand why producer decide to do that. After all, people nowadays are watching illegally, and this manga is unpopular, so nothing worth to adapting this unnoticed by mainstream type of Anime. I like the character, I like the ecchi, good good, thanks for the Anime. I'll give this 9/10, because I thought to giving a 10/10, but the Anime kinda rushed and skip many part in Manga, so maybe -1 for that. If you think the Anime kinda move to the next arc so quick, because it just skip the epilog of the arc and just continue to beginning of next arc. Hopefully Anime industry will be better next time, really, it's hard to distribute something globally, because the difference government and many other factors. That's all for now. - Legal Anime Watcher, Nyuminzt - Legal Manga Reader also, Nyuminzt |
