im bringing this up because i have been forced to watch stone ocean with the subtitles having the censored names, and i gotta say WOW THEY ARE AWFUL. some of the more egregious ones ive seen so far are changing "white snake" to "pale snake", "marilyn manson" changed to "mary lynn manson" and fucking "kiss" to "smack". FUCKING "SMACK". i knew this was a problem with jojos before but now seeing it in action is just unbearable.

im too stupid to think of something clever to put here so just pretend i put something insightful and life changing

Mary lynn manson is probably the least shit name they've come up with. It's at least a homophone. I hate that shit but I get it seeing how trigger happy some record labels and their lawyers are.
Radiohead were sued for a chord progression, Marvin Gaye's estate sues because the "vibe" is similar and the Verve were sued because they needed to get permissions from 10 different people and forgot one.

I’m just annoyed that Limp Bizkit didn’t get localised to “Flaccid Pancake” cause that was objectively hilarious
Also some of the names were actually good, Made in Heaven —> Maiden Heaven is really cool

@Buny0058 yeah i only talked about the part 6 ones here but the part 5 ones should be considered war crimes. Aerosmith to Lil' Bomber, Sticky Fingers to Zipper Man, the list goes on.

Damn right they are. If you listen carefully, they omit chunks of information. It is common to see entire sentences (if you know Japanese language) being completely absent from the subtitles. I also observed how much they “tone down” what the characters are saying and completely change the meaning.
I am not kidding when I say that it looks like Netflix uses automatic online translation. Because simple sentences that have nothing “offensive” or “insulting” are completely changes and, so many times, just wrong all entirely.
I avoid seeing anime in Netflix when possible.

That's actually how Araki's always spelled the name. If it was meant to be "AC/DC", it would be spelt out with English letters rather than katakana.

The censorship is even funnier in the Latin American Spanish dub because they also use the censored names from the English release. Hearing all those weird localized names in Spanish is simply hilarious.

@AchmodinIV they use stand names in the official English manga translation by VIZ and Netflix or who ever uses those.
