The official X (formerly Twitter) account of Yu Sasuga and Kenichi Tachibana's Terra Formars manga announced on Thursday that it is resuming its serialization on the 18th issue of Weekly Young Jump magazine on April 4 after five years on hiatus. The manga went on hiatus in late 2018 due to the health issues of the original writer, Yu Sasuga.

Sasuga and Tachibana began serializing the sci-fi horror manga in Miracle Jump magazine in January 2011 before moving to Weekly Young Jump magazine in April 2012. Shueisha shipped the 22nd volume in November 2018. The manga previously entered a hiatus in March 2017 before returning in April the following year due to the health issue of Sasuga.

VIZ Media licensed the manga for release in English and shipped the 22nd volume in December 2019.

LIDENFILMS produced an anime adaptation that aired in 13 episodes in Fall 2014. A second season by LIDENFILMS and TYO Animations aired in Spring 2016. A two-episode original video anime was included in the 21st and 22nd volumes of the manga in August and November of 2018.

Synopsis
After humanity's first manned mission to the Red Planet was lost, a second expedition arrives. The explorers prepare to exterminate the cockroaches that were used to transform the Martian environment, but are shocked to discover that the insects have mutated into giant, aggressive humanoids with one overriding goal—exterminate the humans! However, this crew of explorers has each undergone the "Bugs Procedure," terrifying experimental surgery designed to make them more than human... (Source: VIZ Media)

Will anyone even still care anymore? This never had the critical cclaim of something like Berserk or Hunter x Hunter.

@malvarez1 According to who? Do you represent the Japanese market ? Because the Japanese market is the priority for both mangaka and the Japanese publisher's. Western market always comes after Japan .

I was thinking about picking up the manga, but nope, I wasn't motivated enough. Good to hear that the manga returns from such a long hiatus. Hopefully it will be finished one day, to not end up as one of "unfinished comic books".

Whenever I wanted to read this manga, the hiatus situation always pulled me back. I hope one day the story will be complete.

@Yubisoft I can't say I know what the Japanese reception is like, but most English forums seemed to dislike the direction it went in prior to the hiatus, and I don't remember the anime being very popular either.

@malvarez1 as they already said, literally no one should care what "English forums" say when taking overall popularity into account.

Sales is what actually matters, and TerraFormars is (or at least was) very successful. It got to the point it had multiple manga and light novel spin-offs, some of the stuff I never even heard about. You can type "TerraFormars" here on MAL and see how many entries are there (quite a lot).

Also "anime wasn't very popular"... if it wasn't, it wouldn't receive the second season. Would have received the third as well, but there's not enough material, so there are only two OVAs for Earth Arc that came as a bonus with manga volumes.

And if manga wasn't popular, it wouldn't be allowed to go on hiatus for 5 years, it would be axed right away / few years later. Or the manga itself could have been cancelled after Mars Arc if it wasn't popular, 22 volumes is quite a lot if you think about it. It brings money. Not One Piece/Naruto money, obviously, but still.
