From the beginning, River has had issues with not being used on Team Satomi. And eventuallly...

For me, i think it depends on how you interpret it. Is he frustrated about never being used? Or is it more that he's jealous of Takeshi and wants to be forward. It's tough to say, there is a chance he's just jealous of Takeshi considering he's offered a chance to take Liz's spot as defender but refused. But on the other hand, he might have rejected it because he isn't trained to defend, but as a forward and knew he wouldn't be up to snuff.

Anyway, thanks for reading, i'm curious to see what my fellow viewers think. Love the show, btw!

I always like seeing new discussions about IGPX, especially about great characters like River.

I think he was 100% in the right to leave Satomi (which isn't a spoiler since it appears in the poll itself).

All the best athletes possess the belief that they are the best at what they do, otherwise they never would have the drive make it to the top of their sport. River is clearly talented enough to compete on an IGPX 1 team, so all he really wants is chance to prove it. I forgot that he refused the defender position, but I can see him perceiving that as an insult to his ability the same way that some NFL teams tell college players that they will have to change positions to play at the next level.

Drawing parallels to real sports, there once was a time when players embraced their teams and their communities and took paycuts out of loyalty to the organizations that gave them their first big break. If the series was somehow set in the past while still having futuristic technology (Star Wars, anyone?), River would be a total villain for betraying Satomi and leaving them in the lurch if Takeshi ever got injured or missed a race.

In this mercenary era of sports where players change teams every year and simply follow the money, playing time, etc., however, I have no issue with what he did.
