TheBlockernator AKA: That Mai Valentine Guy

Hello! My name is TheBlockernator, but you probably know me more as "That Mai Valentine Guy". :) She's just so pretty.

I'm just a normal anime fan, i love Moe/Slice of life stuff. I also like game genre. I tend to favor shorter anime and very rarely watch something long. My favorite anime is Yugioh, my waifu is Mai Valentine.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Is one of the biggest franchises in my life. It was my childhood obsession, my first major anime and one of the most impactful series of my life. I even have the logo tattooed on my arm.

I'm a huge fan of "Magical Girlfriend" anime like Ah My Goddess and Please Teacher. And Monster Musume.

I grew up with 4kids and Toonami stuff and never really branched out until 2016, when i first saw Azumanga Daioh and Strawberry Marshmallow.

My favorite VA is Megan Hollingshead. She's very talented and i have sort of a crush on her :)

I'm always looking for new friends to discuss anime with, so if you want to chat, just send a friend request. I accept most. But keep in mind, i have social anxiety so starting a conversation is challenging for me. I prefer other people to start the convo. It also causes me to not read messages sometimes so if i'm slow responding, please keep this in mind.

My ratings are based around how much i'd want to rewatch a series once i finish it. I usually add notes to my MAL List next to shows i finished, that's mostly just for me to look at and remember what i liked/disliked if i forget watching it.

I use Watching as more of a What's Next section. Typically, i pick about 4 or 5 shows i'll watch next, finish them, then pick 4 more. I watch 2 shows at a time, 1 of them will be longer (35+ episodes) and the other will be shorter. On Hold is series i've started and never got around to finishing, Plan To Watch is similar, i'll watch later. Dropped isn't really "Dropped" for me, it's the very last thing i'll watch when i clear my PTW/OH lists because they're not very good but i want to finish them.

Oh, you're parents were into games? My parents were not much of gamers, outside of the NES. And yeah Nintendo Power was fun to flip through. It was pretty late into the magazines run where I found it, iirc.

That makes sense. Yeah I remember getting stuck at the third duel, at which point I hadn't figured out the fusions. I never used Pojo, but it was one of those sites I occasionally stumbled onto in google searches.

I hope they do try to hearken back to old style games, but I think they are making a killing off of Master Duel, and with the way the digital card game market is, I feel like orienting themselves as a competitor to hearthstone or other digital card games seems to be what they are prioritizing. I'd love to see an old fashioned Card game RPG once again, though. There are indie games that try to experiment with the card game formula, though, like Inscription, though I have yet to play it.

I can feel that. Especially from a western perspective, 2000s anime was kind of an unexplored frontier. Sure, we'd have imports and localization for some shows, but the internet really gave us free reign to everything we could possibly want.

Yeah, there are more important things in the world than fighting over anime. Although I have been known to indulge in some discussions -when i'm bored mostly. But as for "which anime is better" it doesn't really strike my interest. I'm more interested in the themes and ideas more than anything.

Yeah, canon can be a tricky subject sometimes, especially if not everyone is on the same page. It's hard to say who determines what gets to be canon. Is it the original creator? The adaptation team? The community? I generally err on the side of filler not being "canon", but it could also be argued that it is canon to "this particular version" of the story. Happens in video games, too. MGS is a deeply discussed one.

Yatsura is one of those classics that keeps getting brought up. Those are usually the ones that are worth checking out. Hmm I don't really know how to put it. I feel the dynamic of the characters, and how they spend their time together is important to me. It doesn't even need to be all that exciting, I just like watching the characters get closer over time. I haven't watched too many, but from the ones I've seen, that's what I enjoy from them.

Not too many magazines. I think I have some old Nintendo powers laying around somewhere. I think I may have seen newtype, or some other anime related one in stores, but never really got them.

I feel like most of the games were low budget, so they could never get around to implementing a tutorial. Don't quote me on that though, that's just spitballing. Fusion does kind of operate under the same principle as pre-TCG Yu-Gi-Oh, where "technically" anything can be fused, but we only see a handful of them. A lot of the early games were made around that time (I think Forbidden Memories and maybe Duelist of the Roses), so that could be why the fusions system isn't as concrete.

I agree. I think card game RPGs especially have a lot of potential, that is often underutilized. But it also goes to show the strength of the IP that it can lend itself to other things that are completely unrelated to card games.

Oh yeah, I've watched those channels before. Though it's more just whenever a topic catches my eye. The DuelLogs also has a Magic the Gathering channel, so I'm also pretty familiar with him.

I know right! I've been itching to rewatch Lucky Star. There were a lot of references I missed on the first time, like the Haruhi ones, but I 2000s era anime is such a great vibe. Oh, I actually didn't know that Rangiku was voiced by Mai's actress. My favorites from Bleach are Kisuke and Yoruichi. I knew a lot of people who watched Naruto first (still know a couple), but for some reason me and my friend group at the time was more into Bleach. I remember there were all of these infighting sessions online. I never bothered with any of that.

No I don't think I've seen any magical grilfriend anime. Though, Urusei Yatsura has been on my radar for a while. I'm assuming that counts anyway. I do like romance anime from time to time. Like Mysterious Girlfriend X.

I thought reaction channels died by now. Yeah, I remember when the sweet spot for a video was around 15 minutes in length. Back in the days of JonTron, PBG and all those guys. They still exist for sure, but it seems like there's a lot more videos that are cropping up that are anywhere between 20 seconds and 20 hours lol. It's kind of nuts.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
