| Lol these "silver rank" adventurers aren't that strong are they? Everyone at the guild was acting like such a big shot and looking down on Goblin Slayer. Smh |

| I'm starting to see why I dropped Goblin Slayer at the fifth episode on my first attempt to watch it, some four years ago. Things don't work well in what should be one of the most enjoyable parts of the story, when the premise spreads its wings. One of the worst offenses appears in the form of the three adventurers hired by their respective races and kingdoms. And among them, the worst offender, standing out like a nasty pimple, is the characterization of the so-called high elf who looks like a wood elf and acts like a contemporary slow-to-comprehend teenager. Despite her alleged age of +2000 years she is forced into the role of the inexperienced, naive, and bratty adventurer. A role on which the writer heavily relies in order to contrast it with the stoic and methodical approach of the main character. I watched this episode almost entirely in 1.25 or 1.50 speed. This is a result of slow pacing. Slowing down the pace can be a technique to emphasize something. Focusing on every single word uttered by the uninteresting side characters triggers the question, perhaps subconsciously in most, "what is it, what are we supposed to notice?" But there is nothing. Nothing of value at least. Because the dialogue not only lacks authority, undermining what the characters are supposed to be with every exchange, it also doesn't contribute to the plot, or the theme as a whole. "Please pay attention to something that doesn't work." Doooom. One gets the feeling the anime would had fared better if everyone just talked less. Everyone. Which prompts the theory that the main character's laconic mannerism isn't just a result of mental illness, but the inability of the author to write meaningful dialogue. And that's sad. In summary, Goblin Slayer suffers from bad characterization, amateur dialogue, and awkward directing. This isn't only a problem of the anime adaptation, but goes back to the source material. I am still willing to give episode 5 a try, and hopefully beyond it, but I already saw enough to realize the creators were not skilled enough to pull off what they thought was a cool, edgy, and somehow insightful story. Instead we got an awkward, cringe, and inferior product, so far. |
