Mainichi Broadcasting System opened an official website for a television anime adaptation of Yukinobu Tatsu's Dandadan manga on Tuesday, revealing the main staff, teaser visual (pictured), and a teaser promotional video. The anime is scheduled to premiere in 2024. Staff Director: Fuuga Yamashiro (Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na! assistant director, Yojouhan Time Machine Blues assistant director) Series Composition, Script: Hiroshi Seko (Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen) Music: Kensuke Ushio (Tengoku Daimakyou, Devilman Crybaby) Character Design: Naoyuki Onda (Inuyashiki, Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis) Monster Design: Yoshimichi Kameda (Mob Psycho 100 character design, Inu-Ou chief animation director) Studio: Science SARU Tatsu began drawing the action supernatural manga in Shounen Jump+ in April 2021. Shueisha published the 11th volume on August 4, and the 12th volume is scheduled to be released on December 4. The manga has a cumulative 3.2 million copies of its volumes in circulation. VIZ Media licensed the manga in English in February 2022. The fifth volume went on sale on October 10, with the sixth volume is scheduled for a January 9 release. Shueisha is also publishing the manga in English on its Manga Plus website and app. Dandadan placed fourth in the 2022 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! ranking's Male Readers' category and was also nominated for the 15th Manga Taisho Award. Synopsis After being aggressively rejected, Momo Ayase finds herself sulking when she stumbles across a boy being bullied. Saved by her rash kindness, the occult-obsessed boy attempts to speak to her about supernatural interests he believes they share. Rejecting his claims, Ayase proclaimed that she instead is a believer in ghosts, starting an argument between the two over which is real. In a bet to determine who is correct, the two decide to separately visit locations associated with both the occult and the supernatural—Ayase visiting the former and the boy visiting the latter. When the two reach their respective places, it turns out that neither was wrong and that both the occult and ghosts do exist. This marks the beginning of Ayase and the boy's adventure, as they attempt to fix the surreal, supernatural, and occult elements around them to return to a normal life. This was always a matter of when, not if, and great thing is, we'll have this by the next year. Also, yes Science Saru could pull this off. |

That's quite a controversial pick for a studio. I loved Eizouken but I guess some people would prefer a more convencional studio like Bones or Wit. The good thing about Science Saru is that they will get the weirdness of DDD up to eleven, so I have hope. |

The description seems pretty interesting but so far I haven't liked anything that came from Science saru (except Heikei Monogatari which was still very confusing), it just ends up being really abstract and weird. |

Cool. The manga was heavily advertised during the last weekend at italian anime convention Cartoomics and looks interesting, now it needs to be imported here as well and if it receives italian dub, even better. Momo Ayase already seems a very cool main character. |

i hope the PV is not preanimated because its too good plus new fans will be happy if its like that in the PV too on model always and have smooth animation best of both worlds for them but that kind of animation needs a lot of production time so im not expecting it to be that consistent in later episodes if its 2 cour i hope its split cour to have some enough production time |

Excited to see how they adapt this! Even if it's not as good as the manga, it'll get more people to read it. I'm a fan of Science SARU's original works, but I know adapting a manga like Dandadan will be challenging. Some really detailed and hyper dense artwork. I also wonder how many episodes it'll be and how far into the source material it will adapt. I am hoping for the Evil Eye/Cursed House Arc to get covered, so I'm crossing my fingers for a solid 24-26 episode range. Looking forward to more info at Jump Festa and in the future! |

@Maou_heika I think the problem is not that it's "too abstract and weird", but that they want to apply this approach to mainstream battle shonen. This could become the second Eternals, if you know what I mean. Although I'm pretty sure that people who care about animation level more than the plot and everything else will love this anyway. |

@ZXEAN i think we should not judge this early. I remember everyone was saying Madhouse was not a good choice for frieren but now look it’s doing great. So we should for it to air and official trailer. |

@Fluffygreygrass Science SARU also did Devilman Crybaby and Eizouken, so I wouldn't judge too harshly on that alone. Only thing that worries me is Dandadan is not an original work and the manga has some insane artwork. Especially for a weekly manga. Animation is one thing, but the artwork being faithfully adapted is going to be challenging. |

@SLEEK__ASSASSIN I don't know what could be wrong with Madhouse's adaptation of Frieren, they've done hyped ambitious epic shows in the past. But here the studio simply has too specific a style for such shows, which reminds me of the decision to entrust Nisekoi Shaft in the past. You're right, it's too early to judge and I don't expect this to be a bad anime. I just think that if the studio did it in their own style, it would be too over the top for this kind of anime. |

@AgravityBoy The mangas you mentioned were also not original works, especially Devilman, which was completely changed in appearance (and noticeably in the plot) matter in their version. But judging by the trailer, on the contrary, they tried to focus too much on the manga design. Probably to smooth out the possibly too artistic animation. |

@SLEEK__ASSASSIN Yaa you are right although I am not a big fan of Science saru's art style. Hopefully they remain faithful to the manga's original art work. Edit: BUT looks like they changed the art style and the colour looks soo off in the PV. |

@RobertBobert if you wanna know how good the plot is, I'd recommend reading the manga. It's great. The real concern is if the art and animation will live up to the manga's hyper dense and detailed artwork. |

@AgravityBoy I don't want to know "how good is the plot" because I haven't said anything about the plot in either the manga or the potential adaptation. I was talking about people caring more about "sakuga" than the plot or characters, which is something I've unfortunately encountered a few times in the past. |

@RobertBobert Yeah I know they aren't, but I feel like Crybaby's adaptation compared to the manga left a lot more room for freedom, and both of those series were directed by Masaki Yuasa who also has a very specific style. Eizouken also has a very simplistic art style in comparison to Dandadan which has really hyper detailed, busy, and complex art at times. That's why I made the distinction and am only worried about if the art will be faithfully adapted. The "sakuga" isn't really a worry, nor is the plot. |

@Teirayo The "people here" are harsh on them not because they think the studio or their anime is bad, but because they have doubts about the studio's choice for such a manga. I still think Nisekoi's choice of Shaft was a very strange decision, but that doesn't make Shaft a bad studio. I unironically like Japan sinks 2020, although it is noticeably surreal and strange compared to the original live action film and novel, by the way. Overall, I don't understand why any doubt that the studio might be too experimental for such an anime is regarded as any criticism of the studio's work. |

@AgravityBoy Well, that doesn't make them original shows. Of course, you could imply that the anime changed the original manga so much that it became an original project, but I'm afraid that would sound like a mocking, which you don't seem to imply. Either way, I'm willing to watch this as long as it doesn't become too arthouse and attract a bunch of people who care about "how visionary" it is instead of the plot and characters. |

@RobertBobert That's fair! Also I would say as a general rule of thumb to never let a fanbase dictate your enjoyment of a series. Even though I also know from experience that it can be hard. I don't really like snobby sakuga/artsy elitists either, but this is a ridiculously fun series, and has been since before the anime was ever announced, so don't let people like that sway your opinion, even if it does attract those kinds of fans in the future. The plot is... unpredictable to say the least. |

@AgravityBoy Well, all we can do is wait. From what I've heard about the manga, this could be a good replacement for Mob and a number of surreal fantasy shows from the 00s, so it will be interesting to watch and maybe update my zoomer anime stack. Which seems like it should be sorted out a long time ago. |

@Teirayo This is just my senile grumbling, not an actual criticism of the studio's choice or, as I said, their work. The only thing that is still critical for me is maintaining the action and realistic animation, because at one time this was one of the reasons why Gatari never became my favorite show, despite my obvious sympathy. |

@RobertBobert Mm, that seems to just come down to preference. I can't say too much because I'm not super interested in the anime so I apologize for being a brick wall here haha. It's sad when what you expect doesn't match the director's vision, it could be worse anime adaptations could be like Hollywood adaptations lol. I was really scared when I first saw the Dororo announcement because at the time I thought of MAPPA as yaoi studio. Not to say that's totally comparable, I just mean to say that it's a valid concern to worry about the staff, studio, creative vision, and such. You're right that SARU doesn't tend to stay on model all the time, or in some shows cases most of the time. |
