The official X (formerly Twitter) of Kouji Miura's Ao no Hako (Blue Box) manga announced on Monday a television anime adaptation, revealing the main cast and a teaser visual (pictured above).

Shouya Chiba (Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e) and Reina Ueda (Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon) are starring as Taiki Inomata and Chinatsu Kano, respectively.

Miura originally began drawing the sports romance manga as a one-shot in Weekly Shounen Jump magazine in August 2020. The manga began serializing in the same magazine the following April. Shueisha published the 12th volume on October 4, and the 13th volume is scheduled to be released on December 4. The manga has a cumulative 2.7 million copies of its volumes in circulation.

Viz Media licensed the manga in English in April 2021. The seventh volume went on sale on November 7. Shueisha is also publishing the manga in English on its Manga Plus website and app.

Synopsis
Taiki Inomata, a third-year student in junior high, attends Eimei Academy, an integrated school with a major sports program. Having joined the high school badminton team, Taiki tries to attend open practice as early as possible. But no matter how early he goes, he always arrives second in the gymnasium. The person one step ahead of him is Chinatsu Kano, a first-year student in senior high and Taiki's crush.

Chinatsu is the rising star of the basketball team, and the gap between her and Taiki could not be greater. Although Taiki is a decent badminton player, his popularity is nowhere near Chinatsu's, making it even less likely for his feelings to be reciprocated. However, in a strange twist of fate, she ends up living in Taiki's house!

Wanting to become a worthy match for Chinatsu, Taiki pursues the same dream as his crush: to partake in the Nationals. Taiki starts training harder than ever before, all for the sake of building a strong relationship with his new housemate. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

They should've better stated who's animating it too.

Anyways, for what it's worth, this was inevitable. Not the very best thing out there but, looking forward.

@Softhenic03 Considering what I heard about the manga, PAWORKS or Lindenfilms will be a good decision. But this is pure speculation.

I honestly think Production I.G will be one of the best options for a studio to animate Blue Box. I think they did a good job with sports anime like Haikyuu, kuroko no Basket and Welcome to the Ballroom, I don't really worry about them doing romance either because they also have a solid track record with that.

@RobertBobert Something like PA Works or TMS would be the most ideal case. Apparently there was a Cloverworks rumor too, but that turned out to be false.

Worst case it would be Project No.9 lol.

@Softhenic03 I'm a little confused by the way the girl's legs were drawn in the illustration, but it seems the manga is well-known and popular enough to not get a cheap adaptation.

This anime was a LONG TIME coming. I had this manga on my interest stack for predicting future anime adaptations. I tried reading a couple chapters of the manga, but it wasn't my thing tbh.

Here's a couple of the accolades:

2021 Next Manga Award - #8 (Print Catergory), won the Global Prize

'Nationwide Bookstore Employees' Recommended Comics of 2022'- #4

You Should Read This Manga 2023 [Main List] [Should be Anime]

@Memore Any chance of this becoming the next big hit from Shonen Jump? As far as I can see, the manga is really very popular. I expected the same from Komi, but for now it seems like the anime has stopped at season two.

@RobertBobert, yes, I am 100% sure about it! It is INCREDIBLY POPULAR! Its sales in Japan are amazing!! I think it is the same as with MHA, Jujutsu Kaisen and Golden Kamuy.

@MegamiRem I haven't watched these shows except JJK, so I don't have enough knowledge to call them hits or deny it. But I heard that the original JJK manga entered the final arc or something like that.

@RobertBobert Are you talking about wsj anime adaptations or manga? Pick one and don't mix em. You said about most wsj anime ending not the manga. If you are talking about mangas than there are other popular mangas in wsj too or heck wsj mangas are all gonna be popular cause the not popular ones gets axed.

@MegamiRem I'm talking about anime that I'm familiar with. That's why I'm intrigued by the announcements of new Shonen Jump manga adaptations. If you know of other popular or potentially popular SJ anime, then I would be grateful if you tell me about them. I haven't watched Mushle and Undead Unluck yet, so if you recommend it, it might be motivating for me.

@RobertBobert Like I said shounenjump mangas that get anime are gonna be popular more or less cause those would have gotten cancelled otherwise. If not globally than atleast in japan. So you can literally watch any sj stuff that interests you if you just want to watch popular stuff. Also there's various variations of sj magazine. So by sj do you mean any sj manga or from any specific variation of the magazine?

@MegamiRem Weekly, I haven't been following Jump+ much other than Aka's series. Although perhaps I watched some shows without even knowing that they were published there.

@RobertBobert Kaguya's from young jump actually as it's a seinen. Jump+ is a shounen magazine. If you've watched Jigokuraku, it's from there. As for wsj stuff aside from the names I mentioned earlier look forward to when Akane Banashi and Sakamoto days gets anime.

@MegamiRem I've seen these manga mentioned in ratings, but I've never heard of their plot until now. The synopsis sounds pretty interesting, I love shonens that don't follow the too literal battle or romcom formula.

It turns out that Oshi no Ko was also published in Young Jump. Probably for some reason I mixed up the names with Jump+. But anyway, thanks for the clarification. I've read Jugokuraku on Manga Plus from time to time, but haven't gotten around to the anime yet.

I somehow missed the announcement. It was a question on when i think.

But i have to say, i didn't drop this manga because i already reach too far. I liked the very beginning and some stuff from 10 chapters+ ago.

I hope the anime improves the manga, because it is a slow romance, that add a love triangle and later add more drama and new girls for the sake to make the story unnecessary longer. Not even going comment the current chapters, because i have no idea where the author wants to lead the story now.

Having followed the manga since the one shot released, the middle love triangle & Yumeka arcs honestly made the stretch from chapter 94-104 at least twice as good.
