twas an alright episode. I'm not a fan of the animation it pales in comparison to the 90's adaption and the music was terrible but i did enjoy the acting from the new actors and the pacing was pretty good.

I like it, it’s really good. However, Kenshin doesn’t feel like Kenshin without Freckles as the opening or Heart Of The Sword as the ending :(

Man...I still can't get over the fact that we have a reboot/remake of Rurouni Kenshin in 2023. The original was one of the first animes i ever watched (while it was airing on toonami). Everything about this was pure nostalgia for me and I loved every minute of it.

Maybe I'm too attached to the original, but I didn't really like it that much, the voice actors and soundtrack feel a bit off, I'll try to keep an open mind about it though.

Rie Takahashi as Kaoru is just, Rie Takahashi again. She was very good as Tomo and even Emilia has some nuance but this just feels like phoning it in. It's the exact same voice from Hell's Paradise. Is it still voice acting if you just default to using the same voice most the time? That's the only thing that was kinda distracting otherwise it was quite enjoyable.

Not sure why the subs have him talking like yoda when his speech although in Japanese and I dont understand does not seem to inflect this style of speaking.

Really glad too see an Anime adaption of the movie on netflix Rurouni Kenshin. Movie was pretty sweet so seeing anime adaption should be epic.

Well, this one had the opportunity to clean up some of the issues in the first few episodes in the 90s adaptation which had some hiccups along the way...
Unfortunately I feel that in the pursuit of an adaptation that is loyal to the source material, it loses a lot of the charm and chemistry that was added in the 90s offering.
Kenshin's voice is not goofy-samurai but male-model, the OST is bland as all hell (not even in the same league or same universe)
Character design and animation looks good, but nothing standout by today's standards...
I like the motivation for Kaoru here, her dad died while not staying true to his ideals, and she wants to continue his legacy, I just checked and that was omitted from the 90s version.
I'll keep tuning in for now I guess, but judging from what was on display this week I don't have high hopes

Edit:

I disagree. I like this new form better. It is on point with the story.
Well I agree, though

I've been looking forward to starting Kenshin after all I've heard about it. As interesting as it would be to look at the original series, I found the almost 100 episodes daunting to pick up with the onslaught of seasonals. So the remake is a good way to get things started.

There's a decent amount of stuff that the first episode had to unpack. The mark on Kenshin's cheek makes me wonder how he got it. An X like that definitely isn't natural, and I'm sure we'll probably get snippets of his past in the foreseeable future. It's very interesting to see Kenshin use a reverse sword as a weapon of choice, normally wouldn't expect someone to use that type of weapon but he's strong enough to the point the reverse style is actually giving opponents some slack.

Didn't have any real complaints for how the first episode set things up, the fighting was good although the enemies this episode were moreso fodder than anything. The fact that the Megumin VA is part of this is icing on the cake. Her voice acting is distinct enough that I can pick up on it. I have to give props for Kaoru actually going out of the dojo and trying to catch the guys that framed her style. She isn't the strongest of the lot, but it's commendable that she didn't take a passive role and tried to figure out who on her own.

Oh right Samurai X. It's been such a long time since I watch this, but honestly i never watch this till the end just do some skippy skippy because i am not that weeb back at my past xd. So this is might be a good fucking time to restart it again from the beginning and finish this for my better experience.

Firstly, damn Rieri really sweep all the season with so much important role, eh? I kinda feel like she's become too familiar to the point that i might missed one character voice to the another.

But overall i am liking this beginning. Very shounenish vibe and hits right with those two interaction. Let's hope its stay strong with every other cast entering the stage, and, yeah, on to the next...

The Original Anime altered a lot of material in the early episodes , and it never completely adapted the Manga , doing fillers instead.
So if it doesn't bother you to experience the same story a little bit differently , you definitely should try this Remake.
The completely new content won't appear before the 3rd Season of this Remake tho , if it goes up to it.

How both Kenshin and Nishiwaki were able to leave the former dojo in a different town and go back to Tokyo? Were towns in Japan in that period not that distant from each other?

I think "district" would be a better word than "town".
At the beginning , it's precised that it takes place in the downtown , so the Kihei Dojo most probably is not far from it.
But it never got addressed , be in it the Manga or in an interview , so yes , plot convenience.

What you say makes sense, however it is not what the official translation of the manga say.

Kenshin says the reason he wasn't able to find who he was looking for was because the person wasn't in Tokyo and Kaoru says that person was "on the outskirts of a neighbouring town". Considering how they used Japanese units (shaku and sun) to specify the target's height, it seems unlikely they mistranslated "district" for "town".

Oh , i know that.
Even in this Remake , he do say town.

What i meant to say that it would have been more logical for it to indeed be "District".
It could either be an error of Watsuki , towns in feudal Japan being small , or simply a bigger plot convenience than i expected.

Edit : Also i just re-checked to be sure , but in the latest version of the Volume releases , he doesn't precise "Tokyo" in the last bubble , he just say "around here". (Which makes sense , since the 1st Arc entirely take place in Tokyo.)

The animation and voice acting are great, but that's about it. I didn't like the opening or the ending, the soundtrack isn't anything to write home about either. Obviously from a technical point of view this is way better than the first adaptation, but at the same time it feels sterile in comparision. I was really excited about having a faithful adaptation but this kind of feels like it got the generic shounen treatment.
I have never watched the original, I never had a reason to get into it. However, i started watching the remake. I really liked it. I think the animation is nice. I think in general with remakes they go either way. They will either be good or bad, I think this is a nice remake. But of course nothing ever amounts to what one makes the first time. That is just my personal opinion, esp since so much anime is computerized so heavily compared to the early/mid/late 2000s where you at least had a good even amount of both computer and hand drawn.

This was pretty damn close to a scene-for scene remake of the first episode of the original anime. Not that that's a bad thing. It gives me hope that this remake will be a faithful adaptation. I'm definitely very hyped to see how this goes from here.

That said, I am NOT a fan of the autotune opening. What the hell were they thinking with that garbage? Ah well. So long as the show itself stays on point, I can ignore the opening.

Kenshin was one of my first anime when I started watching anime, and it holds a very special place in my heart. I was really hyped for the new anime to come out, because now newbies can know this true masterpiece.

So far I liked it. It has a very nice animation, and the fact that they are probably going to do it like the manga, erasing all traces of filler is great (even though I'm gonna miss some things). The new seiyuu did a great job. Kenshin is the most different one, but I'm not complaining.

Not really a fan of the OP and ED, especially comparing them to the originals. I also miss the outstanding OST 😢😢.

No, don't get me wrong. I did like the original a lot but the animation was pretty meh most of the time, they changed a lot of things from the manga, it had two entirely made-up arcs that weren't that great, and the worst sin is that it didn't cover the most important arc for many. There are two sets of OVAs(Original Video Anime AKA "not for TV" at least back then, I don't know how young you are) that sort of cover it, the first half (Recollections) are some of the best OVAs ever made and the second(Reflection) are not that great to be honest, I mean I liked them, but they aren't amazing.

But I digress, the original anime is not perfect, this isn't about me being unable to accept a newer objectively better made one, because it is, except for the soundtrack. This is more about me thinking the source material deserves a stellar treatment, we may disagree in the end, but if you have a chance, check out the OST for the original anime and the OVAs, I have a hard time believing someone would dislike them, but if that ends up being the case I am sorry if I end up making you waste your time.

I love the original series, the prequel ova are, for me, absolute animated perfection.
I'm not saying that because of nostalgia, trust me, but I think the original is way better than this, at least comparing the 1st episode of both, and that's because in the original Kenshin is like a dude who turns out is amazing, while here they hyped him way too much, it felt that way for me at least, and while this one looks really nice I think the original looks better, has better lighting and drawing style looks better (Kaoru looks so damn beautiful in this one tho, really happy about that).
I'll still watch this of course, and I hope it's amazing, with no fillers, but idk about this 1st impression... and yeah, not having Sobakasu anywhere in this very 1st episode is a fkng sin.
Sorry if my english is bad (っ˘▽˘)っ~~~

Its not bad but also not extremely good. At least better than the Remake Shaman King which is horrible.

Able to see some parts with still images with partial animated but the art style are nicely done.
A more serious Kenshin than the old one.

Overall its done nicely without feeling bored for Epi 1.
Nice modern OP with a more old school sounding ED which i like a lot.

I only watched the first episode of the original and I liked this one better because the transition between serious and goofy was more believable. Or perhaps it was just me not being in the mood back then. Either way, I hope it stays like this or gets better.

hah, i almost forgot Kenshin's manneirisms when he talked. also he looks go-od. ;D
someone here talked about Kaoru's voice and yyyep, it is indeed a bit too sweet for her. but there's something about remakes that I feel the characters in general look a bit more... moe. and glossy. xD I felt like that with Shaman King as well. not that it's a bad thing, it's just a more modern style.

waiting for my bby Yahiko next week <3
