To see Hachiman breakdown after ultimately realizing what Yui and Yukino mean to him was phenomenal to witness. The greatest episode of this anime.

In the end, they did not understand what Hachiman was saying, at least hope this problem is solved. They are his first friends, after all. I think they are fine.

At last, a small breach in that wall of tension that got so thick in the past episodes! I wouldn't say the three have solved their issues, but there's hope :D.

definitely one of the best scene I've ever watched in my entire life I needed that advice from the teacher to open up my eyes not to mention hikigaya's monologue for wanting something genuine and not poker faces, the reason of me rewatching this series was to feel some ideology related to a real thing(genuine) that unfortunately I don't see it nowadays so whenever I feel like I'm on my way of forgetting what my desire is.. I just have to rewatch this show since it's essential to remember what I forgot, it's not medicine but it helps the recovery and it's working 💜

FUCK

first time watching: "cringe....."

second time watching: "damn."

From sensei coming by to knock some sense into and offer some simple but sage advice to Hachiman, to Hachiman confronting the Yukino and Yui and coming forth with the deepest desires of his heart, to Yui taking the first step in attaining what is "genuine" by none other than telling Yukino, in tears, that she "hates the way things are right now." ... well, even if this isn't quite a rom-com, there isn't quite any rom-com anime with this kind of writing, now is there. Words will never be able to fully convey the genuine feelings within one's heart... but it is a step in getting there. And Hachiman wants that, and he deserves that, to really know someone, to have that connection he's longed for for all this time. And why does Yukino storm out of the room, seemingly disturbed, angry, even? Perhaps it was too much for her to take in at once. Maybe she too desires what is genuine. Maybe in her attempts to get Hachiman to leave, she is shocked when he returns to them, different from before, being who he really is deep down, and she couldn't accept that just yet- because she may think that if they'd get any closer, they'd hurt each other. But what did sensei tell Hachiman, on the bridge? It's impossible not to hurt those we care about. If there's no pain, is it even real?

It feels like what would've been the climax. But it's just the beginning, as our main cast are in a way, born anew.

edit: also, you gotta wonder: How and why does sensei understand Hachiman so well? Was it because she understood him that she sent him to Yukino's service club in the first place? Was she in a similar place in her younger years, and saw that in Hachiman and all his wonderful essays, and feels like she has the responsibility to steer him from continuing on a path which will keep him alone? Whatever it is, she believes he is able to set everything right himself. She offers him some words of advice and comfort, and sets him on his way.

I feel like Yui and Yukino: "I DON'T UNDERSTAND. SOMETHING GENUINE? HUH?? WAT IS THAT??" But it's okay, as Yui states, they will find that out together. We can never fully understand everything, but we can take a step in that direction, right?

this show makes me question my capablities of comprehending things. i'm confused by what's happening, what should i think about what's happening, waht's going through their heads, what are they feeling to actually enjoy or feel anything while watching this episode.

i don't understand

i'm actually feeling a disconnect due to this and it has started to happen only around ep 4.

and btw the only reason i can think for sensei still being single is because of her being too high spec. men worthy of her would be rare. hard to find a good partner for her which she really deserves.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.
Feeling half happy, half sad.

Hachiman, Yukino and Yui engaged in the most open and GENUINE display of their vulnerabilities to date.

God, I am so lost with this anime. I just don't understand what's going on any more.

I came here to see if anyone has explained it. I've been reading everyone's posts for around an hour and think I got to the 8th page of this discussion before giving up.

The thing is, I can't even explain what it is that I don't understand, because it's just too deep. The scene with Yui, Yukino and Hachiman in the club room. "you didn't tell me so how can I understand?" "But you didn't tell me either" and so on.. Tell them what? What is everyone crying about? I have watched every episode extensively, but I just can't grasp why everyone is so tense and distant with each other. All this stuff about pretending everything's okay after "back then". What is "back then"? Hachiman's social suicide for Tobe? Hachiman does stuff like that all the time and it's never affected Yui and Yukino that much before. Why did things suddenly become so dramatic? I still can't wrap my head around episode 4, and I kept watching more episodes to see if that would clear things up, but this episode has just thrown a spanner in the works.

What does Yukino means about that? Does she think that when Hachiman said that he wants something genuine he meant that he didn’t feel anything genuine about their club before? So that’s what he wanted and were looking for? I’m also trying to search for an answer about their conversation especially between Yui and Yukino lol it doesn’t make sense to me, or am I not paying much attention lol.

i don't understand

i'm actually feeling a disconnect due to this and it has started to happen only around ep 4.

I am also extremely bad at understanding what's going on here, hence my previous post for s02e05. But I'll try to write out my understanding anyway, even if just to think out loud.

All problems in the relationships between the members of the Volunteer Service Club stem from the same core issue – lack of sincerity. It is also the root cause of all of them being in the club. Let's start from the simplest one.

  1. Yuigahama Yui – she is in the club because she likes Hachiman and wants to become closer to him. The cookies at the very start, trying to keep the club together during the election, asking Hachiman to walk to the club together, etc. Yui lacks confidence in herself, so she cannot just confess to Hachiman. Therefore, to cope with this she's trying her best to become his friend, without revealing her true feelings. She can't be sincere with him, and she couldn't be sincere with Yumiko Miura (the popular girl).
  2. Hachiman Hikigaya – as victim of bullying from classmates in middle school, he developed extremely nihilistic and misanthropic world view. This lead to him being isolated in high school. Hachiman's inner monologue often complains about people not being sincere, but he isn't being honest with himself in that he doesn't acknowledge his own wishes, and keeps sacrificing himself to help others while worsening his own situation. Even though he got close to other club members, he didn't allow himself trying to save the club for himself during the Student Council election until his little sister gave him an external reason to do it.
  3. Yukinoshita Yukino – she is the hardest to understand by far. Her words are extremely cryptic, and her thoughts are even a bigger mystery to me. The reason the teacher (Shizuka Hiratsuka) put her in the club is isolation from peers, caused by the cold personality mask she puts on. My best guess is that this is caused by self-imposed standards trying to follow the steps of and to emulate her older sister, Haruno. The Yukinoshita family is shown to be wealthy and of high status (Yukino is driven by a personal driver in a fancy black car, their father is in the parlament), so the parents definitely also put pressure on Yukino even though it's never been mentioned, as far as I remember (see also the weird situation where only the older sister appears at social events – family-imposed isolation of Yukino).

For all three the lack of sincerity means that they can't properly communicate their feelings, they can't rely on social support from family and friends, they don't have people they trust, and they struggle in development of their interpersonal relationships.

P.S. Forgot to point out that in this episode, Hachiman is the first to start to break out of his shell. He discloses his intimate wish, even though he doesn't fully admit his own shortcomings yet.

Because I couldn't follow the dialogues very well, I rewatched the episode again after a short break from this series. I think what makes it really hard for me to understand the dialogues is that characters almost always talk abstractly, and don't demonstrate their thinking with concrete examples. They also sometimes make logical leaps that my socially inept ass needs these two essay-forum-posts to decipher.

In the dialogue on the bridge, the teacher says that she knew how Yukino felt by the way Yukino acted. But the teacher never explicitly explains how Yukino feels about the student council elections. The teacher only points out that Hachiman has probably realized "it" as well.

On the second rewatch, the inner monologue of Hachiman in the clubroom made me realize that he wants to be able to trust someone. He wants a trusting relationship, in which he could share his deepest desires, even those that are, quote, "awfully self-indulgent, egotistic, and arrogant [...] downright despicable and disgusting [...] makes me sick to the stomach".

All of that is to say, that bullying lead to trust issues – Hachiman said himself: "I probably wouldn't accept anything anyone said at face value." – which is understandable (it's a common effect of abuse) and very sad indeed. Hence him pushing Yui and Yukino away when Iroha Isshiki came to the club for help (the teacher explicitly mentions him pushing them away to avoid hurting them). Maybe Hachiman didn't believe that their relationship(s) in the club could "survive" taking on Iroha's request together?

Just before Yukino runs out of the club, she and Yui have a very cryptic exchange: Yui says that Yukino is unfair, while Yukino asks "you bring that up now?" and accuses Yui of playing dirty. This makes me think that they have some kind of mutual understanding, but I'm not sure about what exactly. I have suspicions and hope that it will be expanded upon in further episodes. Or maybe I'm over-thinking this (how long is this post, again?) and it's just them talking about letting Hachiman use his underhanded methods, despite disagreeing with them. Again, the dialogue is hard to understand, because they keep referring to "it", "this", and "that" but never actually mention the thing explicitly.

Then Yukino runs out of the club, because she can't deal with not understanding what Hachiman had just said? Yui decides that they need to run after Yukino, because leaving such misunderstandings hanging is bad.
Why is Yukino suddenly able to ask follow-up questions when Yui and Hachiman reach her? This running out of the club room bit doesn't make sense to me, it's just there to add drama for no reason.

And after Yui gives Yukino some (non) answers, she also opens up a bit and says out loud that she hates their current situation.
