It's a shame because I want to talk about this anime in a site that isn't flagged by glowies.
I wish Cowboy Bebop never existed.

I honestly love this show, its funny, the drawing style is really good, it's chill and even if the plot might be weird to someone I watch this anime with my best friend and we both like it. No hate is deserved.

I never say this out loud anywhere, but it's my guilty pleasure to watch these. And CGDCT anime in general. It's not that deep though. And the plots of these gender bender anime generally aren't. Way to make a fuss about a problem that doesn't really exist.

to be honest, this anime is like very perverted and very wholesome at the same time if you know what i mean. one of the best this season ngl.
the top reviews hates this though. but yes you and i we both like this.
and as some would say this is the best hot garbage.
i guess some hate it for the big boobas and the lolis not dressing properly and girls being overly friendly with each other.
but to me these are just the icings on the real deal. the real deal is that this is a very relaxing and wholesome.

Stop being a wimp seeking self-validation from MAL.  I would rather have an anime that's loved in Japan and hated by the hiveminds in MAL and Reddit than vice versa because that means I may get more of it.  MAL is an insignificant drop in the ocean that is the anime community and represents mostly normies and shoujo fans.  Onimai is an amazing show and easily the best and one, if not the most, popular anime in Japan right now.  The first is my opinion and the second is a fact that you wouldn't know if you read MAL or Reddit.  I will browse 4chan along with Reddit and this little piece of hell but 4chan gives me the accurate info on how successful an anime actually is.  For instance, I only found out in 4chan that Vinland Saga is bombing in Japan and that the Japanese were not fond of the Chainsawman adaptation.  Crickets in Reddit and MAl where they like to wank themselves rather than give straight info.

Just like what you like dude. I like this show, aside from Vinland Saga S2, I think this belongs to the top shows this season. Art is incredibly good and the story is straightforward. It's a fun watch.

Western anime fans are the most closed-minded watchers.

The people that say this is the worst anime ever made are honestly not worth a thought. They haven't watched it, haven't given it thought themselves, can't relate to the characters and generally are just your average Twitter users.

Now, sure there are some things you can fault this anime on, like you can criticise any piece of media. It definitely tries to cater to men and sexualizes Mahiro a lot (especially the earlier episodes) who looks like a loli.

I really like the dynamic that Mahiro and his/her friends have right now. I also wonder what Mahiro's decision will be if he/she ever gets confronted with turning back into a man. It's just an interesting story about an absurd scenario, with lots of humor and laughs.

Pay Twitter folks no mind, they have no brains

I'd disagree here. Maybe some and I don't judge them for it. But the series is nothing like a trans story for example, as they use every chance to say he is male. I really don't understand why LGBT+ people would like it.

Because it is aimed at a trans audience, the gender bender stories are idealistic forms of gender change (the ability to change our sexuality naturally without medical intervention). The whole series tries to see that what Mahiro is looking for returning to her masculinity through her hobby and customs is not different if she enjoys being feminine + having received a push helped her to have a new opportunity in social relations her.

Nekotoufu has openly supported posts by trans people, and gender bender or Onimai communities like reddit or Discord are full of people of the colors of the rainbow.

Not really, supported by them doesn't mean it's aimed for them.
i already read many gender bender, cross dress, etc and most of the time it's just for the story purpose and not targeting lgbtq. and at that time, this kind of thing even still not a big thing in the west more over asia or japan.
JP twitter also filled with normal people who like warm and cute thing and his aim is jp not western audience in the first place.
same like when japan make yuri for male and yaoi for female audience, western lgbtq treat it the opposite because it's called representative thing.

Many people love Onimai, and 4chan has more glowies than mal.  Onimai is a loli anime so it is kind of taboo like Mushoku Tensei.  Lolis are the best though.

I am not ruling out the audience that has little or nothing to do with LGBT, I am only taking into account the reading of Onimai by LGBT groups that support the series.

I said before, in another thread, that Onimai should not be taken seriously as a story where someone is forced to change gender with questionable methods such as drugs, and that is the premise that sells. But the rest of the manga tries to see Mahiro about how she adapts to her new lifestyle after changing sex, it's hard not to get an interpretation of a trans allegory who wants to do an analysis of a CGDCT comedy.

I may be less familiar with the Gender Bender audience, but in my experience the Onimai circles I've interacted with are militant or supportive of the LGBT movement.

They really don't. His sister calls him "brother" but it's plain as day that Mahiro frequently gets lost in his "transformation" to the point where he sometimes starts panicking about masculinity. The overall vibe of the show is "depressed male otaku finds happiness living as a girl" and if you can't see why that might be appealing to trans people, I don't really know what else there is to say. They list Mahiro as being "transgender" on every wiki I've seen as well, but that's just silly, this isn't a series equipped to tackle a subject like that.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

Historically, it's false that yuri is made for men, but the reverse wouldn't apply for yaoi.

Agreed that gender bender isn't aimed at trans, despite OniMai being different for the genre.

This is a good argument, why some trans people enjoy it. For me it is the opposite of a trans story, as Mahiro is constantly referred to as her brother by Mihari and always talks about regaining their masculinity. So they are in the idealistic form of gender change, but it is half wanting to go back and half starting to find enjoyment in it. So basically it is learning to deal with your assigned gender if you interpret it harshly.

But I'm also glad Nekotoufu supports the community, I'm just really torn on their anime project.

EDIT: My argument is not, that the LGBT community doesn't support it at all, more like they are not a community that "wholly likes this".

I think you misunderstand something: Onimai is not an LGBT series, but that doesn't mean that groups (especially trans) don't like and support the series. Mahiro at first wants to be a man again because he was forced to change his sex and sticks to his hobbies thinking that it will make him a man, but later that desire becomes too soft when he becomes more sociable around him and adjusts to her new life as a girl. Also, I guess, because he makes friends as a girl it makes it hard for him to want to be a man again. At no time does the program allude to conforming to the sex assigned at birth beyond the fact that Mahiro has a fight with himself if being a girl or a boy affects his way of being, his hobbies and his social circles.

I may have formulated something a bit weird. "So basically it is learning to deal with your assigned gender if you interpret it harshly." Was referring to the gender he was assigned to by his sister. It wasn't his choice.

Mihari calls her "onii-chan" because she was a boy before, and she's used to calling her that. Unless Mahiro finds it annoying and asks Mihari to call her onee-chan, it's a minor problem that she doesn't change the way Mihari's referred to her entire life.

With what has been said before, if Mihari wants Mahiro to become a man again, it is because he/she herself asked her to. But all I see so far is that Mihari helps her brother out of her bubble more than by changing her sex.

I think some of your analysis is pretty interesting and on some other things I just have a different opinion. xD But the fact, that we don't agree on different parts of our interpretation just shows, how polarizing the series can be. Exactly what the op of this thread spoke about. There is no community that "wholly" likes it. ^^

I mean yes if you look at certain parts of the show its easy to come to the conclusion that the sister has done something that would be irredeemably evil IRL, slipping a drug that alters your entire body into someone's drink without them knowing is pretty yabai. This unnecessary over analyzation in shows is ruining a lot of people's enjoyment of shows though to begin with when it shouldn't be. An extremely good thing about this show is it manages to retain its value as entertainment for everyone. People need to remember that these shows are not documentaries, they aren't news reports, they aren't there to teach the viewer about a subject. It is entertainment. When I watch the show I go dang I wish I could redo my life as a cute girl, rather than combing every frame for something that would be unacceptable IRL. You can't really find a show where morals aren't questionable somewhere along the line simply because fictional works would fail to hold much entertainment if they were perfectly moral, hell many stories are created simply to vent immoral desires onto a sheet of paper instead of reality. What does it say about humans? Who cares, enjoy the fictional works and be positive IRL, simple as.

I really don't think Mihari is evil and overanalyze her behavior. One of my problems with the series is that Studio Bind does a lot of weird things, like oversexualizing a series, that didn't need it at all. Also I disagree with people calling it a LGBT/trans series, because it is not imo. It is a male gaze series, that delivers the fantasy of being transformed into a very cute girl, which is totally fine. That's all, I also watch it every week with a friend and sometimes I'm annoyed and sometimes I'm entertained. ^^ I just wished it was different, because I love the art style and the opening is such a banger song.

Your argument mistakes hype for the lack of criticism. It is possible that this series doesn't get any hate in Japan, but I wouldn't know, because I don't read those forums. It is also very popular in the West.

EDIT: It is not "very" popular, it has 88k people watching on MAL and a pretty fine score. I'd call that decent.

That... I can already understand where the conversation is going.

The "oversexuality" in Onimai is too soft if you compare it to a real ecchi. And if it is a problem of the adaptation, I clarify that in another thread there is an interview with Nekotoufu about his high participation in the show, for which the mangaka himself has approved and discussed that the production of Studios Bind take the liberty of buffing something trivial like Kaede.

I don't care what Nekotoufu thinks about the adaptation. I just don't like oversexualization of minors, especially in a situation where the protagonist has the gaze of an adult man. That is just weird to me. I think showing sexuality is something important if you do coming of age stories. But in this instance I just want the funny and wholesome slice of life content and the sexual content throws me off. Also I'm especially harsh on Studio Bind, because I did also hate it in Mushoku Tensei (even more, because the humor is literally r*pe humor in some cases).

I know, I absolutely know where this conversation is going.

Maybe because I'm too young that I still don't think too much about the consequences of looking at a drawing, 10 years later I'll probably be more strict with what I consume. But this is why before doing a witch hunt towards something that would be vaguely called "disgusting and weird", I start to recount the things that I have seen and enjoyed before.

This is why I long ago stopped judging people for the things they want to fantasize in a work of fiction. I only find it obnoxious those who say that fanservice is immoral and questionable when they then have things that they have enjoyed in their lives, like Monogatari on their favorites list for being "well written" ecchi or Kodomo no Jikan with 10/10 where a 7-year-old girl tries to flirt with her teacher and the series doesn't bother to sexualize her and the rest of the characters.

I understand your claim that I have a double standard in watching and rating work and that is probably true. I watched Kodomo no Jikan a long time ago and I criticise it a lot, but 10/10 was the score I gave it back then because of the psychological story. Maybe I would rate it differently, maybe not, I don't know. Monogatari Series I watch and enjoy also because of the Ecchi and humor, but I understand the criticism it gets for how they use minors. But the difference in this case is the genre for me. I enjoy Monogatari because it is aware and it is coming of age (which I already said needs sexuality), and I dislike Onimai because I like wholesome slice of life better without the male gaze and without the sexualization. Maybe my opinions on those series would be different under different circumstances, but I can explain why I like and dislike certain aspects of shows and not everything is black and white.

But this is why before doing a witch hunt towards something that would be vaguely called "disgusting and weird", I start to recount the things that I have seen and enjoyed before.
I want to add, that what you watch and what you enjoy doesn't make you a better or a worse person. None of the persons in this thread, I have a problem with for liking Onimai. My best friend watches it with me and loves it, that does not affect our friendship and it enhances my experience watching it. It is however important to reflect on the things you have watched and not being apologetic about a certain work, just because you liked it. On the other hand it is also cool if you can spin a more critical aspect of a work to something that explains it in a good way and enhances it. Every interpretation is different and many can be true at the same time. ^^ Also I don't think my opinion is better or worse than yours is.

Historically, it's false that yuri is made for men, but the reverse wouldn't apply for yaoi.

I am not so sure either about this part, it's just some yuri scene that i saw are kind of ecchi like for male viewers, something like mahou shoujo ni akogarete.
it's not rare to saw H-games for male featuring yuri either, though idk if this can be applied for normal manga or not. magicami recent event also have yuri theme.

I have my criticisms around how faithful the adaptation is to the manga, but this is nothing around what I'm reading here. I do not intend to try to put you in a low echelon, much less am I someone from a much higher position as some users often want to be by writing reviews, but I cannot agree with the lack of honesty to criticize the show for using nuances of fanservice as if this weren't the first time (and especially in a cgcdt) as well as (trying?) to seem to enjoy the show when you've made it clear that it's the worst it offers in the genre and give it the worst score.

If I were you, I would simply drop the show and look for something better for my palate.

Different shows have different context around the use of sexuality and maybe my "the anime is the worst this genre has to offer" is a bit polemic. Maybe it is dishonest or maybe it is just the fact that opinions differ. For me personally it is the CGDCT series that annoyed me the most, so it is my honest opinion. There are a lot that look much worse or are much more boring, but in this case it annoys me that my enjoyment of certain aspects gets worsened in an instant because something I dislike happens. My review of the series also happened, not because I think I'm an expert in this field or anything like that, but because I wanted to express my opinion to see if people agree or disagree with me and it seems like both is the case, based on the emojis. ^^ Also, the scores are also used differently by everyone and are very subjective. The series I use a 1 for might be a 6 or 7 for the average MAL user and I'm not even a little bit consistend in those, it is just for my own orientation.

I still watch it, because I have fun exploring genres and areas of life I don't understand or feel uncomfortable with. Also my friend loves it, so it will be completed and maybe I'll even read the manga to compare (more than the two or three scenes I already read). It would also be sad to read the discussions about the show without having seen it. xD
