Incredibly fun and unique editing, loved the parallels between the conspiracy theory docu cuts and Lain's ongoing inner turmoil.

I think that the documentary was very relevant. The documentary was interesting in that it implied that by creating the internet, we are becoming like one huge network; and by comparing this network to the neurons in our brains, it seems that this network (or the 'Wired') would allow us to become like one entity, creating neuron pathways through information and communication.

I think the part with the alien and bit about Roswell was supposed to show how Lain was becoming more and more detached from reality, as the wired and the real world begin to collide and overlap. The aliens signify her own alienation and how different she perceives the rest of humanity to be. The episode also highlights the question of what reality is. As the Knights are supposedly changing the past through their omnipotent control over the wired, Lain is unsure of what has happened or if indeed, she has lost control of herself and is committing all of these acts whilst in some sort of semi-conscious state. On top of this, Lain is confronted with the concept of 'deleting' the past through the wired, and this challenges the concept of history. In the same way that The Ministry of Truth deleted the past in Nineteen Eighty-Four through modification of past events, Lain is shown that through the wired, it is possible to erase all evidence of something ever existing, and in doing so, effectively 'deleting' something from time and space altogether.

I think much of what is spoken about in SEL can be related to the current situation of the world. The fact that we are constantly being bombarded with information and propaganda means that we start to lose our sense of reality too, although not to the same extent that Lain does. Equally, as it becomes easier to connect with people all over the world, perhaps we are slowly becoming this 'one entity', each human being as one neuron, creating one massive brain through our communicative network...

I've only just finished ep8 though, so my opinions will probably change once I've seen the whole thing. :)

I feel like I'm on a bad acid trip but for some reason I can't stop

was the creator trying to say that the internet is created by aliens and crazy us scientists to try and deter japanese youth from using it at the time?

man I'll be watching all the explanation vids after I'm done with the series, this is the wildest anime I've watched so far, not even close

I think I understand better now. It's just a big neural oscillation manipulation. No wonder the guy went crazy and start shooting in the club. He was just too brainwashed from using the internet.

Let's see what Lain is going to talk about with this top hacker.

Having just watched the episode tonight (admittingly for probably the 10th time over the years), my take away is not that literally aliens are involved with the Wire's creation but that people believed in the Roswell crash and aliens and so it effectively became real. Not because it really happened but because people believe it did and once that becomes enough in the public conscious, that is all that matters. They are providing an equivalent to what is happening in the show. This further ties into the concepts with Masami Eiri brought up in the next episode.

"What it was has yet to be proven. Conjecture has become fact, and rumor has become history."

I was able to follow things smoothly enough up until now, but must say this episode is bouncing around like a superball! I'm getting the meaning of it all, but WHOA is this one ever giving you a lot to take in at once compared to a lot of moody and minimalist episodes before this.

Yeah i think this was the most fever dream episode yet. The way the ep started with an Alien documentary then an actual Alien appearing in Lain's room, dressed up as well, immediately told me i was cooked from the get go.

Kinda sad they left the events of last episode with Lain choking a supposed other "Lain" on a cliff-hanger. I'm still wrapping my head if this Lain of the Wired is actually a whole other Lain or just one of Lain's personalities, there were some hints this ep that could possibly point to it being a separate body such as the more serious Lain that usually talks to the anonymous voices in the Wired telling Taro, "I don't know whether or not there's another me in the wired." so it seems she doesn't even know herself.
Some other quotes like, "But there's definitely no other me here in the real world." and "The other one with a body had only appeared in the club." all feels important to help decipher my questions but honestly my brain feels so fried from this episode alone to try and understand it.

Pretty interesting that Taro has a connection to the Knights, and that they tried to get Lain to plug in a device that would "reset her memory" although then exclaiming that they find Lain interesting because of something strange to do with her.
Lain's parents also 100% in the know with what's going on behind the scenes and her father feels deep rooted in the backstory, the way her parents were preparing for everyone to suddenly liquidise into Fanta Orange was a massive tell. Also wtf is happening to Mika, she literally feels like an innocent that got hit with a stray bullet in this story, she looks like she's been reduced to room temperature IQ and for what reason.

Honestly the scenes where it switched to history documentaries sent my brain through a fucking loop, the two last things i'd thought i'd ever see in this show is Aliens and actual history documentations. I know shit all about history, but I definitely think each documentary was real and had some relevance meaning to the plot, but my ass is not doing the math and i'm just gonna settle on it being a really cool elaborate technique of building up suspense using real world history to the reveal the shows own plot device.
What i took away from the ending was a crazy Doctor secretly added some device into the 7th generation machinery which let people unconsciously connect to the Wired before dipping. So i feel like this adds another layer onto the plot point of "Wired leaking into reality" since people could be in the Wired without even knowing.

The ending was also just insane, the cliff-hanger of the Doctor appearing in front of Lain's house with bandages on his scars and an aged body looking like he's ready for a fight was not what i was expecting.

Intense, so intense! Had to pull out my notebook so I could write everything down and piece it altogether.

My initial theory, which was Lain is god on the wired, who came to experience what life in the real world is like, is a bit adjusted--she is still god, but instead of coming to experience what life is like, it's more like she is piercing through to connect the two world together, basically making the neural network for earth come true.

She previously took that chip and that made her part of this family--and that personality, the meek one, is a result of the chip. I like that personality though, so I'm hoping it's not that.

Maybe the aliens provided the 12 men with the knowledge of how to connect the two worlds, so that earth can become conscious, just like how their planet might've gained consciousness.

@piripara

You are making the mistake of thinking there is only one and true explanation of the anime's story.
