So, I absolutely looooved the original 1998 Trigun. So fucking cool. So when this was announced I was hyped. Fast forward to now and I'm not hyped at all. Tbh, the only reason I'm thinking of watching it is cos im learning japanese and it's a show I know what happens in it to some degree so easy content. The problem is im just not sure if I can bring myself to do so. I'm scared of the possibility that they butcher my love for it considering I watched the og Trigun years ago. I hate the new designs but I think I can stomach that. The next problem isnt the CGI, wish it was 2d but orange are great, but how colourful it is. It doesnt fit. Then, ive heard stuff like removing Milly and giving all the secrets away straight away so there's no tension or mystery. How true Is this?

This may sound like im hating it without watching it but thats exactly why I want some opinions of people who have liked the OG one and are currently watching this new version. How much of a problem will the things I listed be?

it’s so different than the original, same premise but it doesn’t try to follow the manga so basically nothing is “the same”. The OG Trigun is one of my favs ever, but so far this one has also been fantastic and I definitely think it’s worth the watch since you’re already a Trigun fan

- Backstory/Knives in introduced immediately. Old series didn’t introduce the main story until over halfway through. I like this because it introduces the high stakes and tension early - old series was mostly episodic, but Vash’s backstory was a mystery. Different styles with their own benefits. Imo this isn’t a bad change.

- way darker than OG Trigun. Trigun was mostly comedy for 70% of its run before getting a bit darker. In the old Trigun Knives was motivated by his hatred for Vash, but in this series Knives actually has his own goals other than Vash, which makes him a more compelling villain. Stampede still has goofy comedy, but it’s gotten much darker already than OG Trigun ever got, and Knives is much more terrifying.

- Milly is missing so far. The older reporter plays a solid role as someone who knows his way around the block and knows the general rumors of the world, whereas Meryl is a “rookie” reporter. I think it’s fine so far, but is it better without Milly? No way, of course not. That being said, I am guessing that she will be introduced sometime later - could be wrong but I think it’s still possible. Even if she never shows up, it is what it is, they can probably still make a great show without her.

- Animation is good imo it’s just different. Don’t compare it to 2D and just enjoy it for what it is. Music is really good.

TLDR: Original Trigun is amazing. Stampede so far is really good, it’s just different. It’s much darker in tone so far and the story changes so far are no reason to be scared off. It’s doing a good job being it’s own thing.

Since I did not watch the Alternative version of trigun or read the manga, I'm really enjoying this show.

From what I know hearing from other trigun fans, They did make many changes like replacing characters, Developing the plot quicker than the 1998 version etc. But I think it's justifiable since it was announced as an original remake.

What's ruining this show for a lot of people is definitely the nostalgia factor. "Why is the character design different?", "Why did they replace characters?" etc are what's making the show less popular. and to avoid this, I made my mind not to watch the Trigun anime or read manga and just go in blind to this show.

I really dont know if people will change their opinions after couple more episodes and I really dont care much. I'm happy that I get to enjoy this show for what it is.

i didn't like the designs at first too but you get used to it real quick. as for how colorful it is, well that really depends on the atmosphere. for example, the last episode had a darker more serious tone so it wasn't as colorful. milly's replacement (robert de niro) is pretty meh so far, hardly does anything so it's hard for me to have an opinion on him but milly definitely was more fun, but then again what can you expect from an old guy lol. the CG is really good, the action scenes look great. there is no tension concering vash so far and his bounty is significantly lower but vash is still the humanoid typhoon causing chaos wherever he goes. also there are still suspenseful moments, such as in the latest episode.

only 3 episodes so far and i don't think it's better than the original (yet?) but it's definitely worth a watch, it's a different take on trigun so i don't think it'll ruin your love for the original even if you end up disliking this, just like how berserk fans still love berserk despite the fact berserk 2016 exists, and thats not even a different take.

I never watched the original but might do so in the future. I hear a lot about how much different STAMPEDE is, but this is making it's mark among my favorites this season. The animation is fantastic and only a contrarian, whiney, dumb anime "fan" would say otherwise. It would be like claiming Arcane or Into The Spiderverse where bad just because they were CG, when they objectively look amazing. Among all 3D productions of this size in recent years, this one stands tall among the best in quality. It does feel a bit more western tho; not only because of the style but the tone and character animation just give out that vibe. If you have the mental maturity to watch it for what it is (that is, anything above 13 years old), it looks very promising so far, regardless of how it compares to its ancestor counterpart.

I'll be honest I was feeling kinda iffy about this show but this week's new episode definitely won me over. Definitely has a darker tone than the original. I don't think the original had any gore in it either like this one, right?

This one is more like an Alternative setting, with a dark vibe, I mean OG was PG-13 and this one is totally R rated from Episode 3... This isn't as good as OG, but still enjoyable.

Just watch it. Since it doesn't follow the manga and stands alone like the og it is worth every second. Vash is the same loveable guy he's always been. Just watch it. I was upset at the redesign before but omg I am in love all over again.

If you are a fan of Trigun why wouldn’t you at least try watching this, worst case scenario you don’t like it and drop it or love it and get more trigun

Loved the '98 one and loving this one a lot as well! The animation is amazing and personally I do love the designs. Milly is not there, for now, but I still hope she will maybe show up later. And with the revealing stuff early on - I don't mind it, because it makes me think about what other big thing they prepared to unveil later! The newest ep, third one, was fantastic! So different compared to the first two, made me hold my breath back for a bit.
The opening is such a vibe, immdeiately loved it. And the guy voicing Vash suits him so well in my opinion. In conclusion - totally worth watching!

I can't recommend watching Stampede, even as someone whose favorite anime is the original Trigun. The biggest issue is the characters. Vash lacks the confidence and charisma that made his character enjoyable. From the start of original Trigun, it's made clear that Vash is willing to fight (within the boundaries of his principles) to protect others, and his skills are demomstrated throughout the first few episodes. In Stampede, Vash has a much more timid attitude that is difficult to get behind. The first two episode give brief glimpses of what he is capable of, but fail to convey the same strength and attitude of the original. Meryl and Milly had a strong dynamic; Meryl was more commanding and skeptical, while Milly was more upbeat and willing to listen. Milly was also great at playing off of Vash, since she found his antics and personality amusing where Meryl found it grating. In Stampede, Meryl has a new partner instead. Robert is a horrible replacement for Milly. His character is a stereotypical cynical drunk, which is uninteresting on its own, but he makes things worse by constantly stopping Meryl from taking action and weakening her character. I can't say I remember him having any interesting interactions with Vash either.

There are plenty of other things that could be criticized about Stampede: the CGI environment that lacks shading and often looks too bright, the redesign of Vash that further dimishes his ability to appear menacing as the Humanoid Typhoon should, and a mediocre soundtrack that abandons the distinct desert rock style of the original. Some of these things would be forgivable on their own, but all of this combined with character assassination and broken dynamics makes it unenjoyable and barely feel like a Trigun adaptation.

They changed a lot but it's not trying to be the original again. It's its own thing. Sure, the previous secrets are just backstory this time around, but that gives us room for brand-new secrets that we didn't already learn 25 years ago. I'm into it.

I say give it a shot, but make sure you go in with an open mind. Like I said, this isn't just the original Trigun again. If you want that, then just rewatch the original. This looks and feels different. But imo, so far, it's definitely worth watching.

Also, I seem to be the only one who was never super attached to the original Vash design and actually really enjoys the new look.

I'd say wait a bit. I'm in the same boat as you, Trigun is probably my favorite anime of all time. I was pretty hyped leading up to Stampede and then I saw the first episode...

Sure you can say I'm blinded by nostalgia, but I don't think the story is very good. Really the only thing keeping me from dropping it completely is that it is Trigun, if in name only. Don't go in expecting the same characters at all. I don't even mind the new designs, I kinda like them in fact, but it's everything else.

This won't make you hate the original, in fact it might make you like it even more. It's different enough to where they are wholly independent.

As far as being darker, it just mostly amounts to more frequent and graphic violence with a higher emphasis on action. Rarely a slow moment for better and worse.

So wait and see how it popular opinion develops. I don't think it's downright awful, but it doesn't really add anything worthwhile or new to the universe in my opinion. But on the same note it could get dramatically better. Still on ep3 so who knows. I'm hoping it starts heading in a more positive direction after the latest events.

The strongest points are definitely the visuals and sound, so if you hate how it looks it'll probably be even harder to watch for you. That and you can go "Oh hey it's that guy!" which I admit is a good feeling.

Best to go into it viewing the characters, plot, setting, themes, etc as being wholly unrelated. Stampede doesn’t care about the source material & is prioritizing being new & more Zoomer friendly.

Interesting. Most people say watch it but I also fear exactly what you have stated. Im still not too sure. I may give it a couple more episodes.

disastrous. ep 2 & 3 are so badly made, that i think if one drops this season now, they won't miss anything.
but ep 1 was fine, you can watch it to relive those feelings

When I saw this show's announcement, I decided to watch the 1998 Trigun first. Completed it today and my thoughts are "it's pretty good". Now as for this 2023 remake, it is the main reason why I even watched the OG Trigun. So I will watch Trigun Stampede, if it's either super ugly, or super annoying, I'll just drop it.

You should look at Trigun Stampede, as it's own thing. Do your best to lower any and all expectations. Finally I watched the OG Trigun, in preparation, to watch Stampede and to tell you the truth, I liked both equally. The OG has more heart, but Stampede makes up for it, in the new content added to the plot.

Good luck.
