Well, your initial post makes it sound like the only reason people are giving it a low score is the fan-service/ sexualisation of the characters. Which was most definitely not the case for the majority of those people who gave it low ratings.

"I was reading a couple of reviews about Made in Abyss about having inappropriate fanservice and/or sexualition of the main characters, hence why they gave them very low scores."

Perhaps that wasn't your intent, but when you phrase it like that it makes it sound like that's the one negative people had.

As to whether or not it has inappropriate fan-service and sexualisation, I was on the fence about it since a lot of the scenes with nudity are bordering on it. That's why my review brings up the copious amounts of child nudity without using terms like fan-service or sexualisation.
If you have a small frail beta ego, then yes, it might come across that way. It was obviously just leading up to the second short paragraph in reality, you know, the actual question I wanted answered lol. I didn't expect someone to be so nit picky, it's still relevant regardless, people vote lower thanks to the "fanservice".

Maybe that intent was clear for native English speakers. It definitely wasn't clear to me. It looked like you were portraying all the criticism as being over the perceived fan-service.

But I also have English as a secondary language so maybe I read things too literally when I peruse an English paragraph.

I find it very disturbing that so many people normalize this kind of behavior and comments in characters that literally look like they're 8 years old (even though they try to convince you that they're 12, it doesn't make it better either way). The problem is not that we are shown nudity or even comments that are made by the characters from their innocence as children that they are, it's definitely not something to worry about. The problem comes when the comments just go a little bit further than they should, and we are slapped in the face from the very second episode when we hear Riko says she had introduced a stick in Reg's ass. That is just incomfortable to watch, just as much as the image of Riko tied up naked with some sort of shibari knots.

To be honest, if we weren't talking about a society that has such a HUGE rate of pedophiles and acceptance of pedo behavior, then we could speculate. But it is not the case. Tolerance of pedo content in Japan is real and making fanservice based on it is just disgusting. Some of the answers in this discussion just look like super crazy excuses to justify this kind of content. It's pretty straight forward: children making comments or behaving in a sexual manner is pedo content and pedo bite. The situations we are talking about are NOT based on character's innocence (which we also have in this anime and i repeat, those are not the problem, because they are children experimenting and that's okay, it's just not shown in an innocent light, doesn't manner how you want to look at it). It is what it is.

I am absolutely loving the storyline, the character design and I just fell in love with the series in an instant, but that doesn't mean I haven't felt extremely uncomfortable watching two 8y.o. looking characters making sexual comments. We are not talking about ecchi anime, because then we are talking about actual adults, we are talking about f children, for fucks sake. It is def not accceptable and I still love the story, but i completely get that people are thown off by this kind of stuff. And I have only mentioned stuff that is in the first chapters because i have just started with it. But I could already notice it, and now I know i'm going to keep finding content of the like.

If you are bothered because Riko said "Why your *** looks like that* while they were in the water then you should grow up. Honestly, remember how old they are, where they came from and why they are there. Everything that happens in the anime can be also take place in real world experience.

I'm pretty sure that this thread has died down, But I want to link this video since I think it greatly justifies the show.

It's a favourite of mine and I watched it while it was airing, but can someone point me to where these scenes are? Honestly, I don't remember there being much/if not any at all in this series. If there was, it really took a backseat thanks to how great everything else is.

I don't know what any of these guys are talking about! The reason why people complain about the show is more than just nudity. When the main character or any child is punished, not only do they stripe them naked, but they tie them up in a sexualized way. They use BDSM it is Rope Bondage with little kids! This is why they had a problem with it besides the nudity. The nudity of kids is disturbing enough but then to put them in sexual torture rope bondage is too far. The fact that some people in here don't seem to have a problem with child nudity, even if its anime, is disturbing and sick! Talking about its not that bad any nudity of a child is bad there is no levels to this crap!

The anime has a few nudity scenes. One, Riko's punishment, is not sexualized at all (apparently it was in the manga?), the others are a bit more debatable but I don't think sexualization is really that invasive. I think most of the complaints come from the manga and the anime is a tame version.

It's perfectly fine to watch in that sense. You get more sexual trigger warnings from a Doraemon episode. But it's violent and crude and uncomfortable because it's all happening to kids.

Riko's punishment is sexualized its BDSMit was supposed to represent sexual bondage that what it was supposed to be, that is the joke about the punishment

Thank you finally, someone, with some sense wrote a comment. All they did was make excuses for the inexcusable just because they like the Anime/Manga. I was starting to lose hope in humanity until I read your comment

Yeah that was bad wording in my part, when I say that it is not sexualized I mean that it is only briefly glimpsed at. Like they put it there just to make the quick "uh this looks weird and over the top" joke rather than for fanservice.

I just dropped at episode 7 and I'm done. There's so many defenders of this show pretending it's innocent.
The creepy, fetishistic undertones taint the story and have ruined the good parts of the anime for me. Especially after I've learned the anime toned it down a lot, because the mangaka is a pedo and the manga is much worse. Experiencing the mystery of The Abyss and the story isn't worth it anymore.

The nudity is covered and the anime artists made sure to only outline, not emphasize it, that's not where the problem is. It's the frequent placement of it and the fetishistic undertones bleeding thorough out the whole anime. It's self-expression of the mangaka's desires.

Isolated, the majority of these things wouldn't be too strange, and could be justified as part of the storytelling, but contextually with all of them together, it's pretty clear what's going on.

Here's some examples from episode 1-7.
- Ouzen's sadism. How she whispered in her apprentice's ear that she'd string him up as punishment.
- Which is likely the same bdsm (shibari) knot punishment that happened to Riko, nude.
- The endless references to Reg's anatomy. How both Riko and Habo approached inappropriately examining him. The stick...
- Riko's embarrassment for peeing on the sheet, with the sheet hanging up for all to see.
- Riko's lack of self-awareness about her frequent nudity in front of a hormonal Reg. (And Marluk)
- Marulk's cross-dressing as a 'trap'. Being trans is an identity, but anime unfortunately often just has it for the sake of being a fetish.
