Is there some reason that the majority of people agree with that review or are the users who found it "helpful" most likely to be bots?
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

yeah i've found it weird too, like, why would the novel have such a high rating if the most upvoted review of it BY FAR has such a negative score?

It's almost assuredly just bots, but then I wonder why MAL wouldn't do anything about it... but maybe I'm giving them too much credit.

my anime list has always had problems with this kind of shit. Usually they pay attention to anime, but don't ever trust them to LNs. There are many LNs that already had in the top 10 of MAL (from Lns) that are now top 30 for less (the most comical case is with nogi wakaba who had 8.50 and reached 7.80, now, recovering a little)

Anyway, if you really want a site with better bot control, I recommend anilist, the notes are more compact there.

Oh, and about the 1-rated review... It's clearly biased, but he made some good points, even though I disagree with 50% of them and agree with the other half.

I just took it as stupid banter and I have never even bothered to read the review.

Of course you must take my biased view as I LOVE HakoMari. When I have myself in this spot, I couldn't care less with haters.

I guess MAL just doesn't really bother with botted voting on LN's compared to anime, which is much more popular on here.

Maybe because it sounds legit? The review author even updated it once.

I guess MAL just can't delete toxic review to their liking out of free speech. It's very much a shame since this kind of review will probably draw people off a good work of fiction. But again, it's their miss for listening too much to other's opinion. 😤

As much as I like HakoMari, all LNs and VNs are baits for the worst type of people and incels, hence I upvoted the review. And there are many like me. So no, it is not just the bots.

It's a very common thing on MAL. Vocal minorities like everyone else want to feel validated in their opinions, which is pretty difficult when the overwhelming majority of people seem to disagree. With novels like this, they'll typically first check reviews to see if anybody felt the same way they did and when they find a review they agree with, they'll mark it as "Helpful", which boosts the review up. The people who liked the novel are much less likely to do this. As far as they know, everybody else already liked the thing and as a matter of fact they probably read it on somebody else's recommendation. They don't need extra validation and even if they did, the "Helpful" marks would be diluted across all of the positive reviews, which are quite a bit more numerous than the negative reviews. MAL could mitigate this by limiting the possible score disparity between the MAL score and the top review score, while obviously still allowing negative reviews to be displayed on the front page, since obviously they're not trying to create an echo chamber either.
