I remember seeing this when I was small and it was all dubbed in Cantonese. Thought I think it might had been the 2nd season, don't remember.

Anyway it's great to watch this again. Rofl when Ryo screamed out in pain when he left the restaurant XD

That was a great scene indeed - he acted so cool, while he was really hurting, haha. When I watched it for the first time it was the first indication that City Hunter is something else. I really love it how Ryo can be totally serious for one moment and then absolutely silly the next one.

What exactly does everyone else see in this show? I just watched this episode, and all I got out of it was that Ryo Saeba likes to sexually assault women and uses terrible strategy in battle. Don't get me wrong. I love the 80s Miami Vice-style vibe and generally dig cheesy shows, but this show is really juvenile and even in that respect kind of dumb.

Yeah, it may seem so at a first glance. On the surface, City Hunter is just a cheesy 80s action/comedy anime, with an average plot and recurring episodic outline.

But for me, what it's really all about is Ryo being a REAL man :). He acts all goofy and dumb, to break the tension for the women he protects(and to make us laugh), but when things get serious, he's all smooth and cool, and at the end of the day he always saves the girl.

Another aspect(some may not agree with) is, that even though Ryo always acts annoyingly perverted towards female gender, the message City Hunter ultimatively conveys is, that in this rough world of today women should be cherished, appreciated and looked after.
Maybe that's one of the reasons why Ryo's clients are mostly all female. Well, besides making our male blood flow faster :D.

This anime is awesome. I know now.
There is like 2 weeks delay in my recent reading list
I randomly bought discount/second hand manga with cute/mysterious cover.

Use Personal Blacklist extension in Chrome if you just want to Google for a series synopsis, without google slapping MAL score in it.

I'm so glad I've started this now rather than later, just from this episode I think it's safe to say I'll enjoy the series. Love the 80's style, plus Ryo is voiced by one of my favorite seyuu

This was the episode which got me hooked on the series. Even though it's a bit toned down when compared to its manga version, it still got me interested in the anime.

I've read a couple chapters of the manga a year ago, so I somewhat knew what I was getting into, and I'm glad that it translates well to the TV format. It's a good introduction to the setting and Ryo's character. Looking forward to more of this.

Yeah, this. Not a fan of Ryo even remotely. I don't really care if he's just verbally flirty, but he's being a sleazebag.
Though usually these kind of antics die down as the series progresses...hopefully that's the case here.

The legend of Ryo Saeba? The legend of Ryo Saeba.

I agree though with Mirorin ^ to a certain degree, not a huge fan of Ryo's personality right now, seems very typical of an 80's cool perverted (and never get a girl) hero, though I expect to get accustomed to him soon, since the reviews for this series did state that it's going to be an ongoing gag in the series.

Well, I have started this. I've got a 480p reencode from nakamasubs so I think I'll post some decent screen caps here and there. Plus create episodic threads wherever necessary.

So like me lmao

Decent start to the anime I guess. Although, I see people detesting Ryo Saeba for being a pervert - I was not really annoyed by it a bit. In fact, after reading the synopsis I think I was pretty aware what I was going to divulge into. I had a chuckle at this.

.. and then later after the murderer went by, he groped the ass. What a lovely assman! o7

I liked the strong world building here. A bit unsatisfied on character introductions maybe I was expecting a backtstory on Saeba of some sorts but this'll do I guess.

All I know is Ryo Saeba is a bad ass, skilled marksman and I am going to stick with his daily adventures.

But at the same time he is lecherous and goofy to watch.

Other things I love are those eye shots, which bring in a sense of tension and excitement.

Notably, Ryo Saeba is good at judging people. I loved how he figured out that murderer would come back to kill him because killing while driving was his sense of thrill. I was totally not thinking that!
I don't know why people write that they are approachable persons,
if you were you wouldn't be on MAL.

Starting to collect the manga again, I figured I would give this show a new chance since I always liked Cat's Eye and I was taken by the manga in only a few chapters.

Now, I remember why I was never able to like it. The anime makes the choice to start immediately by throwing at us "remixed" chapters or original episodes relying on the recipe used only after a few cases in the manga (Angel Dust, I think). At least, the manga first seduces you and injects the comedic elements progressively, letting you the time to digest them (if I remember it right). The honesty of the adaptation made me dislike it very much when I was 3~10 years old and it still succeeds to repulse me now that I like the series and its hero.

The best scene? The only one who "sounded" just like the comic: the shot through the hand.

2/5 It would probably be a 1/5, had I re-read the manga right before.

Still, I am glad I heard for the first time Saeba's original voice. The OST is good (and gets even better) and mixed with the visuals / environments give a good 80s urban impression. The opening animation is really 80s too.
Oh, and "Get wild" is one of my favourite songs used for anime. (among a few others who will appear later, like "Foot Steps")

Note: watching an ADV DVD-rip, I am impressed that they even conserved the "mokkori" in their subtitles.

Definitely a good start form although found it a bit weird how the older sister stayed so calm after her sister being killed and then you have Ryo just joking around and being a pervert when they first met. I do like Ryo though, both his seriousness and silliness are pretty balanced and it was pretty badass of him to shoot his own hand just to save a hostage.

Good first episode!

I'm not a fan of Ryou's pervy side, but it isn't like I didn't know about it when I started this one, and thankfully he is more than that. He is also hot, funny, and skilled. Not that any of this makes his pervy side alright, but at least it may be enough to make it tolerable. I also loved his seiyuu, as soon as he opened his mouth I knew it was Akira Kamiya, basically because of Mendou, and I really like his voice.

Oh hey it's Kenshiro xD

Is it bad when it's just the 1st episode but I immediately fall in love with Ryou's character? xD
Kamiya Akira just made him more badass and cool, but still humanish with pervy & comedic personality

The fact that Ryou is such a shameless pervert even during the most inappropriate situations is what makes this so entertaining + he's a badass when it counts. Very simple plot and "some" suspension of disbelief is required, but it got goofy coolness written all over it.

It's only the first episode, but I already know that I'm going to like this a LOT.

Cool senzu beans! I should probably make more whimsical decisions regarding what anime I should watch next 'cause I enjoyed this first episode.

The setting looks great and the OP was bitchin'!~ Ryou has a laidback personality, but he's competent in his job

Here is the first episode of another legendary franchise, which is imbued with the spirit of the 80s, absurd humor, cool action, as well as Ryou Saeba's eternal pursuit of the source of the desired sexy - these are the adventures that await us with the City Hunter.

The way Ryu shoots his gun reminds me exactly of how Yusuke shoots hits spirit gun. I'm not sure if Togashi is a fan of City Hunter or if it's just a coincidence (different studios and no crossover in big name staff) but it was a cool thing.

This show also kicks ass. I think the obligatory "wowee zowie! I'm so horny!" stuff is already overplayed but I can live with it. This era of anime is pretty magical for me.
