I started watching anime in 2001 when Cartoon Network became available on my cable provider. I always loved the Toonami block, which featured shows like Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star, the Tenchi series, The Big O, Dragonball Z, and more. I also watched the anime that appeared on Adult Swim when it first started, including Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. For a few years I considered myself to be very involved with anime; it filled a void that in many ways still exists in American animation. These days, I tend to show more interest in American work like Avatar: The Last Airbender than anime as I really believe that American animation needs to come back after its decline during the 90s. To some extent, anime has also greatly declined in value for me as it often comes across as increasingly cliche and unoriginal.
While I used to watch more action/serious shows, these days I seek to watch anime that is original, thought-provoking, and artistic, with mellow, grounded acting and characters, themes, and situations that are believable or else refreshingly creative. I've found myself gravitating toward shows like Ghost in the Shell and Mushi-Shi, which break the mold in order to meditate on philosophical or artistic themes. The key word these days is definitely mellow...
