I keep tradition alive and will use this thread.

A quite literal way to have the main character learn to love herself, and her world. And I guess it isn't really over, because some innocent girl is going to have go through the same shit. If taken as pure allegory, Saya's actions aren't as vindictive as they might seem at first, as a personified existential crisis over the course of a summer vacation before a big move: deny the world, and live in a fantasy, or deny yourself and just go with the flow, of course that only means literal destruction if you take it at face value. But, in universe, maybe Saya's learned something and she might be more flexible with the 'rules, I dunno. That Ichika and Sei are carrying around a piece of the cracked mirror, a distorted view of the truth, I find to be very interesting. Pretty typical story for an anime about growing up in terms of theme, but I think it was handled in a very unique way with no bullshit to bog it down.

Overall, a nice coming-of-age story that all came together in the end. For a final episode this was very subdued. I think the most interesting thing in the anime was the line Ichika used to open the show (and repeated in the last episode), and 'the seasons rotate' text at the very end. Some of it was weird though, like the casual 'btw this one girl was raped' thing that they did. Also, perhaps they could have made 'seeing through the eyes of the djinn' more impactful.

I wanted to give this an 8 but there's lots of unnecessary stuff and is kinda lacking.

Em.. All of these thinking in dualities.. I didn't see those situations that were portrayed earlier - I didn't see them like that at all.. You're thinking by your own categories - alright.. But really that's not what was actually happening..
Em.. No.. You're not portraying things as they are, Saya.. You're distorting things to your own view - this is actually closer to reality.. ;P
So ok.. In the end.. It's all just a game trying to reach some understanding of human soul?.. You know, what?.. It's very unreliable method, to say things first.. On the second note, are you really just that unempathetic and psycopath as to choose this way of learning about things?.. You know, if you want to learn more things through people suffering, you don't actually need to actually make people suffer.. You could.. You know.. Watch some dramas, or something.. ;P I'm pretty sure you're very narrow minded, Saya, anyway.. If you honestly think about world in such dichotomies and terms as "sins", and stuff.. How about just stopping torturing actual people, and just reading some snuff doujins or something, if that's what turns you on?.. ;P Truly a disgusting creature you and your boss are to me.. ;P
And no, Saya.. You didn't show anything really even close to reality, even if you think you did.. If you're so sure you know everything and show everything, why you need this experiment to begin with, hm?.. ;P Can't you see how it's illogical?.. ;P Get down from your pathetic mountain of things you began to believe in, and start talking with people, or find a hobby, or do many other things.. If learning about world is what you want, really.. Torturing - isn't very reliable way to learn more.. People usually live in different conditions, you know.. ;P

My 71st completed series chronologically.

For the record, I extended it a 7/10 rating.

Why is it the best character ( Manatsu ) always vanishes at the end??
I also thought she was moving away from her Friends, or did they forget to go?
Who cares anyhow!!

this anime, produced at junichi sato's studio of the time, its clearly drawing from sato's contemporary works like pretear, princess tutu, and maybe kaleido star. trying to be a story about the chaotic emotions that fill a young person's heart and the struggle that adolescents experience in grasping maturity and adulthood. how we find ourselves turning into people we might not recognize, how we have to accept the pain and damage that growing up causes us.

but uta-kata fails to tell this story. it is only going through the motions. the characters and world are glaringly underwritten. there are some girls who are sad for existential reasons but this is not conveyed with any convincing urgency. the supernatural allegory taking place is incomprehensible on its own, i only grasp its intentions from what it's obviously inspired by. it's just not a well crafted story. there's some cool ideas and nothing is done with any of them in a way that works. the story gestures at depths that it makes no attempt to properly explore.

most of this anime is painfully boring up until the last couple episodes where it's foreshadowing some fun ideas but they amount to nothing. i could have watched this last episode on its own and gotten the same general impression and impact.

in all uta-kata felt like a much worse version of junichi sato's later directed Umi Monogatari which is also a magicalgirl-adjacent melodramatic anime thats weirdly horny about sad girls. Sato has such a gift for writing about sad somber teen feelings that i can look past it. i have no similar patience for incompetent imitators of his style.
