"We live in what tourists call paradise, but our lives are anything but that…"

As much as I am enjoying this show, I couldn't help but observe that the show is (intentionally) ridiculously idyllic. The Aria Company has only one useful tour guide who gives maybe two tours a day, yet they have a wonderful free-standing waterside home, can afford to support a pet and a freeloader (Akari), maintain at least two boats, and wants for nothing. You really get the impression that they could just close shop and go on an island vacation (which they do) and suffer no ill consequences.

It's a tremendous setting that works for the peaceful, quiet setting of the show, but it seems to be inviting parody. Nonetheless, I can find no example of a gritty, working class parody of Aria, where Akari and Alicia must struggle to survive, where intense competition between the Undine companies leads to corporate oppression and corruption, where the utopic paradise of Neo-Venezia is supported on the back of a seething underclass.

Perhaps it is just too blasphemous for such a pleasant series, but if anyone knows of something comparable, let me know. At the very least, I am sure it's worth a few laughs.
