Just a thread to list and randomly discuss the manliest men during 1970 to 1995:

Char Aznable - Gundam franchise (1979 - 1988)

Char began his career as a Manly Man on precarious ground, I mean when we're introduced to him he's wearing a fucking stupid as fuck mask for an entire season, but through his actions he won us over, and once the producer got rid of that stupid mask in Zeta Gundam, well you cant resist the man.

Walter von Schenkopp - Legend of the Galactic Heroes franchise (1988 - 1997)

I can find no flaw with this specimen of manliness. He blows shit up, hacks people to death with axes, gets the only explicit sex scene in the LotGH franchise, excellent voice actor and design. *salutes*

Bean Bandit - Riding Bean (1989)

He has a 1970 Boss 302 Mustang and 1968 Chevrolet Corvette C3 in his garage. Enough said really. Well, except I havent seen Bean Bandit, but undoubtedly he's more awesome in the Gunsmith Cats manga than a short OVA, we need more adaptations of the manga pronto.

Gabimaru "Gogul" Rikiya - Cyber City Oedo 808 (1990 - 1991)

He has a red mohawk. Sentenced to 310 years. A hit with the ladies. Rips mecha to shreds with his bare hands. A MAN.

Roy Focker - Macross (1982 - 1983)

Lives up to his name by bedding any female within arm's reach, pilots a fighter jet/mecha and has a rough misogynistic manly laugh.

Ryo Saebo, City Hunter -> Angel Heart (1985 - 2005)

Basically, the definition of a "man". An unstoppable womanizer that you better hope you're not enemies with!

Cobra, Space Adventure Cobra (1978 +)

Oxygars? Hell yeah, let me have one! Basically the cooler James Bond of the future. In a future where woman don't wear pants.

Captain Harlock, Harlock series (1978 +)

(I'll try my best to come up with a quote here)

"On my ship you fight for nobody but yourself. You fight for what you believe in. If for any reason you ever want to leave this ship you may do so at any given time without letting anyone know if you desire, it's your choice and freedom."

Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin (1996 - 1998):

*Picture is too large, so I put spoiler tag.

- Skill in sword is very masterful.
- Having a sword that doesn't kill people means he respects people.
- Serious in attitude and about how to live.

Yusuke Urameshi from Yu Yu Hakusho (1992 - 1995):

- Very justice.

Chief Chujo from Giant Robo the Animation (1992-1998)

The '90s Giant Robo OVA series has a lot of manly characters, so I will just list my favorite (otherwise it would take forever).

Chujo is the quiet leader of the Experts of Justice who wears a stylish suit and smokes a pipe. He is manly. The main reason he is on my list is sort of a spoiler for people who have not seen the OVA though.

Here is a little bit of dialogue (that is sort of a spoiler so I put it in spoiler tags)

Lt. Kinryu from Macross 7 (1994-1995)

A very underused character in the series, but still memorable for his manliness as evidenced by the following scene.
"What is Diamond Force if I can't bring down one battleship?"

He is also a ladies man (but maybe not as much as Old Max haha).

Gutts - Berserk anime 1997-8
I guess he surely is manly enought, because when someone struggle agains one hundred armed men (well they were soldiers) and kill them all, you can call him only MAN.
