![]() An original anime titled Kaizoku Oujo (Fena: Pirate Princess) was announced at the Toonami panel during the Adult Swim Con on Sunday. The anime is scheduled to premiere on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block and stream on Crunchyroll in 2021. The project is being billed as a co-production between Adult Swim and Crunchyroll. Synopsis The series tells the tale of a young orphan girl, Fena Houtman. Fena has been raised on an Island where there is no hope of becoming anything more than chattel, to be used and discarded by soldiers of the British Empire. But Fena is more than just another powerless orphan. When her mysterious past comes knocking, Fena will break the chains of her oppressors. Her goal: forge a new identity, free of bondage, and search for a place where she can truly belong and find out the true mysteries behind a keyword "Eden." It is the story of a lifetime adventure she and her crew of misfits and unlikely allies will have, in pursuit of her goals! (Source: Crunchyroll) Kazuto Nakazawa (B: The Beginning) is directing the 12-episode anime at Production I.G. Announcement Trailer Source: Crunchyroll |

Looks good. Kazuto Nakazawa is the director so it shouldn't be boring and action will be good. Hopefully the story is good as well. |

18th Century Europe and Pirates, definitely a territory that anime hasn't touched on much at all so here's to hoping this'll sate that. Teaser looks interesting and the interview really nice too. I haven't had the best history with CR Originals in all honesty but here's to hoping this'll end up good to me. |

Our prayers for a pirate themed anime have been heard. Although, I'm not that enthusiastic considering the company and the people that are involved. |

I like ninjas & I like pirates so hopefully this is good. At the very least those little snippets of combat may indicate that the fight animation will be pretty dope. Rooting for ya Fena. |

There's something about this that looks cheap or badly designed. Not quite sure what it is. It feels off to me. I've wanted a proper pirate anime for a while but this doesn't look like what I was hoping for. Still, I'll give it a go and see. I did enjoy B: The Beginning, so I guess there's hope. |

the trailer looks pretty dope but that keyword eden thing from the premise sounds generic af, the direction on b the beginning was solid if i remember correctly but the writing was a damn mess, hopefully the writer of this one is someone else. |

YES WE FINALLY GOT ONE, not happy about the company involved either but idc cuz finally, pirate anime that isn't One Piece lmao people can say praises about One Piece all they want, that's fine, I mean it looks cool and all. but they can't really deny that it's literally the only pirate anime that anybody even knows about lol. good to see more diversity in pirate anime |

As a huge Key's fanboy, I can only say that the trailer looks like a weird mix of Little Busters and Air. Well, also with cheap animation too. I hope that in this regard, the guys will not repeat Trigger with their excessive self-citation in BNA. @CatSoul Was it subtle trolling at MAL's folks or a joke about the over-leftism of people from ANN? |

Really? But why? It doesn't sound culturally offensive, sexist, or homophobic ... I went through the first page comments and it's just one person who thought Fena shouldn't have been white because of the synopsis saying the British held her "like chattel slaves" or something like that. Basically, that commenter is saying the British did not have white slaves, any white "slave" was an indentured servant. The other comments are just not looking forward to it because of the director, it seems. |

I remember a bunch of cases on ANN where moderators for no reason deleted my reply to a comment that was very stupidly criticizing mine. It looks good but the tacked on romance is the only concern (even the director admitted it, that the romance would be tacked on), it probably should've just been a pure shounen with a female lead, it can be done without the romance and still retain the female fanbase. |

Maybe he meant yuri bait. Writers usually have trouble writing romance for a male-focused show with a female lead. Lol there's little chance this will be good if Crunchyroll had any real influence at all. Doesn't help that the plot already sounds bad. Real shame that instead of paying their employees, Crunchyroll is literally spending money to waste the time of anime studios by making generic anime like GOHS and probably this And most those comments about ANN are blatant lies. Most the posts about her being white actually said "why is she so white". "so white" is. And no one denied white slaves existed. The complaints about her being white were more in response to her being from an island. Basically impossible to be that white and be from an island. Also the only posts that got deleted were because of personal attacks were used in an attempt to "win" an argument. ANN staff as a whole are a bit overzealous most of the time but this was not one of those times lol. |

The basic plot is orphan girl with a mysterious backstory gets a pirate crew of ninja samurais & fights back against her oppressors whoever they may be. I genuinely struggle to comprehend what exactly is so bad about this. Its not exactly an original synopsis but nothing about it screams "Oh this will be crap" especially since we only have the fucking synopsis to go by which means we can only speculate about this. But then I see your dig about Crunchyroll & it suddenly all adds up. This is less about the show itself & more you just disliking Crunchyroll. I don't use Crunchyroll much but I hope their contributions to this show in funding will be a good investment. |

The West has changed a lot since then. Crunchyroll and Funimation higher-ups have a goal of embedding their values in the industry. Don't know much about Adult Swim, but in the current environment it's pretty much impossible to really not be part of that and work in American media. |
