People who labelled this film a worse 'Your Name' really just don't get the film. This film was honestly great, animation, story, music and character wise. In fact I believe in many aspects it exceeds Your Name. For example in terms of complex character motives, which was seen in Hodaka and I discuss other reasons as to why in this video!

Spoiler warning for kimi no na wa:

First of all, the expectations. Most of us were excited by seeing another Makoto Shinkai movie with music by Radwimps and lot of similar cast as Kimi no na wa. From the poster and trailer, art was very similar too. Its literally the first Japanese movie to be screened in my country, so in short, it was very much hyped. Now here's why I think people liked Kimi no na wa more:

1. They have already watched Kimi no na wa; and this movie does have lots of elements from it. The art style, 'a girl and a boy' and supernatural legends. Now while both movies have these supernatural elements, Your name only revolves around Miyamizu family's exclusive bodyswap kind of history, the elements in this movie are very random. Another example of disappointment by expextations, because i had already watch your lie in april, i could not like 'I want to eat your pancreas' too much because of how similar they are and how much of a masterpiece the former is.

2. Music: Again, both movies have music by radwimps, but i think its much much more powerful in kimi no na wa. From energetic 'Zen Zense' in opening to 'Sparkle' at the perfect time and 'Nandemonaiya' at the end, music played a HUGE role in swaying emotions while watching it. Great music in tenki no ko too, but not really as impactful.

3. Characters: This movie didn't give as much time for the main characters to gain depth (atleast hodaka) as in Kimi no na wa. Your name focuses much more on the mc and since their love story wasn't linear, the feeling of emptiness moved us much more than in this movie, where, well you can guess what will happen next.

Finally, in terms of art, this movie's animation is one of the best I have ever seen. This was a total visual masterpiece, not as much in story. Also, lot of disappointment comes from our expectations from previous movies but if we forget our earlier experiences for a while, this was a brilliant movie.

It was pretty solid, sure, you can say the characters didn't have as much time on this one but they were definitely better written.

Tenki no Ko has more important characters than Kimi no Wa, so it's natural to not have as much time dedicated to then.

Also, the time span in which the film happens is shorter than in Kimi no Wa, which gives most people the sensation that "not much happened".

Overall, I liked this one better than Your Name, but Kotonoha no Niwa is still my Shinkai all-time favorite

So, people who dislike "Tenki no Ko", or prefer "your name" over it - have to be those who "don't get it"?

There are several reasons why i prefer "your name" over this anime. Art/animation-vise everything is 10/10, no arguing there. Now let's get to important things.

1)I didn't get attached to character the same way i did with Your name. Nothing unique really. Not MCs and not supporting cast - all forgettable.
2)The plot was overly predictable. Right at the very start we're told that the "people who change the weather" will vanish if they use the power too much. This basically spoiled the movie for me and it was obvious where the plot was heading and what would happen - her disappearing towards the middle of the movie.
In "your name" - the whole "meteor hitting the town" plot-twist, and characters being from different timeline was something totally unexpected; the chemistry between the characters felt real and wasn't forced; overall it was enjoyable. They didn't like each other from the get-go, and began to develop feelings after quite some time has passed.
In "tenki no ko" both MCs bond incredibly fast. Female MC is unrealistically kind and incredibly naive. The way she revealed her powers to him really made me cringe a bit; and she even called him to her house! Why? The only time you saw him was at McDonald, all depressed, hungry and alone, and he failed to be a "white knight". Is this enough for you to trust him enough and reveal your superhuman abilities???
3)The climax was weak - In "your name" MC has to face extremely hard challenge. First, he hardly remembers things from the past; then he goes to a distant place uncertain if he can find anything; he finds the necessary item in a hidden temple; waits for a specific time of the day to contact the female MC, all this leads to both of them saving countless lives, changing the past/future - It was a deserving happy ending. A very good ending; even if the two were to forget each other in the end.

What about "tenki no ko"? MC loves female MC, doesn't want her to disappear, ONLY has to climb a specific building, enter the temple grounds, "fly to a cloud" where female MC is luckily still "locked" instead of actually vanishing; bring her back by simply grabbing her arm; returning her back to earth - QUITE AN EASY challenge, if you ask me. Not to mention, all this resulted in freaking Tokyo getting submerging under water! Something that anime treats as "what ya gonna do, nature reclaims what's hers" -_- The whole nation-wide tragedy is glossed over for some cheap drama/romance. It'c cheap for me...

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm happy that female MC was saved; not gonna argue about whether if it would be better if she died instead (it's uncertain if she would die at all!); but you can see why to me, THIS ending is inferior to "your name's" ending. There was barely any suspense, no plot-twist, no real challenge.
4)Soundtracks weren't memorable as well -really. But you could consider this as nitpicking.

Hmm interesting. I definitely agree with the first point you made. It was always going to be difficult for this movie to live up to the expectations as a result of Your Name's popularity. The second point doesn't seem convincing. Sure, many people prefer Your Name's soundtrack over this one, but I don't see anything close to a significant difference between the two movies in this regard. It seems harsh to include this as a point when explaining why this movie was "a disappointment".

The third point is one that I completely disagree with. Your Name was way more plot-centred, which is why a common criticism it received was that the characters were bland. Weathering With You, on the other hand, is centred a lot more around the characters. The two protagonists in this case have actual character arcs. Even Suga had more to him as a character than Taki & Mitsuha, in my opinion.

I wrote the following elsewhere while comparing the two movies. Have a read and let me know what you think.

Honestly, I can't really say much about this film. I thought it was a "good" film, but nothing more. The characters are incredibly one dimensional, and even then the story itself felt generic. The sound design was average, which I would say is for most of the portions of this film, except art design and directing.

Personally, I think if you view the movie as a standalone feature in a vacuume of its own, it was really good. Sure, you can find things that you dont like, but taste is subjective, regardless of how many people share the same or similar oppinion. (For example my favorite Shinkai movie is Voice of the distant star. So what if the majority dont think its the best? It is for me and that is all that matters at the end of the day.)

The issue here is, I believe, that Your Name is basically currently considered Makoto Shinkais Magnum Opus and everything he makes after will just automatically be compared to it with relentless scrutiny simply because people expect everything to now be another Your Name (or better).

But personally I think that would be boring. If every movie is a master piece, none is.

I´d much rather have him make what he wants and how he wants. So what if the next movie, or even the next next one does not compare to Your Name. That just means that Your Name is just that damn good. And if he one day makes something that surpasses Your Name, people will move on and it will be the thing all others will be compared to.

My advice to the disappointed people would be: Take a page from the world of art, Da Vinci also drew many famous paintings, but there is only one Mona Lisa.

Thats the thing about perfection, you only need to achieve it once.

What if I say tenki no ko has more elements than kimi no na wa...About Makato Shinkai, his character style has always been the same, art style has always been the same, choice of music always the same,I am cool with it,what tenki no ko missed are small details that's all,I guess people now a days expect masterpiece like something completely new out of this universe something no one has ever seen before so I can understand...most of them are basically love com loving teenagers...though anime has already rounded up pretty much every corner of the sea it is not easy to come up with something completely new visual idea for the story...about kimi no na wa,my cousin bro also said the same thing that it only revolves around 2 characters, body switching and all the supernatural time travel paradox phenomenon that revolves around them...I would say if tenki no ko was first in line than Kimi no nawa,I can guarantee that people's tone of speech would have been different...I have watched both of the series in topic in 1080p close up so I know what I am saying...one good thing about Kimi no nawa is whatever elements it had they focussed on it to the maximum...it just that tenki no ko I would say if they were not being lazy then they forgot to polish it to make it shine as bright as it could had...you know "Nagi no Asu kara" from p.a. works daem it had the magical art style/graphics/elements for it's time just like Clannad...yeah...those were the days.

Not a big disappointment but neither story nor characters were that great or interesting that's I'm sure about. Your Name had a much simpler and more straightforward story but was simply more engaging and interesting, beside at least the twist of having time travel in it wasn't that expected from the start, which in addition to its heartwarming and simple tone, could shake it off with a decent twist. This one's story was like it's trying to be more complex but every corner of it was very predictable and characters were simply not that interesting to me.

It tries to do many more things than Your Name but it fails for me. I will prefer the more simplistic and heartwarming story with a decent twist than this.

Not to say it was a waste of time or anything. I rated it 7/10. Good but not great.

- When they say good, they are actually comparing "this" movie with the one which is "like a STANDARD" for them or in the Anime Community. It's probably because of the new Anime Movie Standard, when YOUR NAME was released. Almost every later movie is compared with this standard.

- So, when compared with the standard (KIMI NO NAWA, in this case), it disappoints Fans ; & not because its not good. That's just if you look at psychology of people ; not saying its the absolute truth. :)

- I enjoyed both the MOVIEs.

SPOILERS for the entire film.

Just finished re-watching this film today and its all spectacle with little substance.

I personally find this movie disappointing because it has such a good premise and creative ideas, but wastes it on a story that says you can ignore the rules of society and cause a national disaster just so you can eventually be with the one you love. MC is kind of selfish and dumb if you ask me. He flooded all of Tokyo 3 years straight for one girl he fell in love with. The characters just shake it off as nature just be like that and we adapted, I don't buy that they just get used to permanent rainfall in 3 short years.

Also, the fact that the MC is a runaway high school student makes half of the plot hard to believe. The random loaded gun in the trash can is dumb. what are the odds of finding a loaded gun in a trash can in the middle of Tokyo? The police chasing him and not finding him quicker is so farfetched. He uses a mobile smart phone for crying out loud. The police can just track him with that via GPS, Wi-Fi IP tracking, and/or mobile data location tracking. You cannot tell me he bought it and pays for celluar data himself when he cannot/barely pay for housing, food, water, rent, etc. His parents and the police can track him on the phone they bought him. Also do not say he turned all that off when he constantly uses Yahoo! Answers for life advice. Age up the characters to high school graduates students, then they can just be struggling young adults living Tokyo. Remove the gun and police scenes, they have no reason to be here.

I like the premise of this movie, boy meets girl that can change weather from rain to sunshine, but at a deadly cost. Hina is the best written character in the film, she wants to find her purpose in life and MC helps her find it, but that purpose ends up being her own undoing. I love the animation, some of the best I've seen 2D and 3D Japanese animation blend together so seamlessly. The music being done by RADWIMPS means it slaps hard. I like that Hina has a dead relative that she wanted to walk in the sun with on her last day of life and she kind of sacrificed her life to use her powers to bring smiles on people's faces. Her sacrifice would have been noble due that she brought the sun back for the people of Tokyo.

Too bad, MC had to ruin that too because he brought her back and flooded the entire Japanese capital with it. He just wants to be with her though, his parents hate him, he has nowhere to go. Sorry but that it is kind of sappy and cringe. They don't even show us what his life was like before he ran away so we just have to guess why he did not enjoy living on the island. Bad parents, bullying, child neglect? Who know, the film doesn't make time to yell us specifically so it must not think its too important.

TDRL: The ideas and visuals are there, but little substance. The writing is very average, characters are flat and forgettable expect for Hina, MC and his antics ruin the plot and make it dumb, no reason shown to the audience why he ran away, climax is dumb, MC being a runaway is dumb, police being unable to catch him despite multiple attempts is even dumber, the gun in the trash is dumb. This film is a 6 out of 10 max. Even on its own its pretty mid/average.

My hot take is this wasn't disappointing at all. It was a great movie, just not as good as your name

The ending I don't know how to feel about it though. Your name's ending was definitely more satisfying, but this ending felt more "realistic"

Spoilers: If the movie ended with the girl actually vanishing the curse but kind of dying, this movie would have been better than your name and hit me emotionally.
